Anyone have an alternator whine?

I've had our 03 Roadsmith trike now for 2500 miles.I'm starting to hear a whine and also notice the lights get alittle brighter if I rev the engine, and the whine sounds abit higher in pitch. Does anyone know what the standard amps are on a factory alternator are? And where is a good place to buy one,not looking for cheap but something that is long lasting. Thanks in advance for any info,I need all the help I can get !

The GL1800 alternator does not whine! It chirps like a little bird.

Guess my '06 is a crying bird then... The guys I ride with say they don't even have to look up to know it's me. My bike has "wined" every since it was new.

Honda beefed up the alternator output in '06 to 1200 watts at 5000 rpm but I think it comes on line to near full charge much sooner then that. I seem to recall the '01 thru '05 was 1100 watts.

Both of my GL1800's lights brightened a bit when I came off idle. Check the charge voltage at say 2500 rpm. I'd expect to see 14 plus volts.

YES! That whine drives me nuts to the point where I turn my hearing aids completely OFF! My trusted trike-builder and a trusted mechanic, both of whom work 90% on Goldwings, advised "get used to it as almost all Wings do that!" According to them, the whine does not signal the necessity for a new alternator, it's just the nature of the beast. Sure wish someone had a better solution.

I have straight/open exhaust on my 06 so all I hear is the sound of my exhaust which is music to my ears. It rumbles at low RPMs and sounds like a Porsche at high speed.

My 07 does it, and yes it drives me crazy. When looking to buy a trike I wanted to find one that did not whine, unfortunately I could not. All the units I looked at had some sort of whine - some worse than others, but it was definately there. Learn to live with it and eventually you don't hear it (selective hearing), much.
