Default Insurance for a trike

I am in the process of having my Goldwing made into a trike. I called my current insurance carrier, Allstate, I they told me they do not insure trikes. Can anyone suggest an insurance company?

I am using Progressive, fairly decent to work with. I have never had a claim against them so can't help you there. Good luck.

I have AARP/Formost. $235 a year for good coverage.
A deer decided he wanted to be my fender ornament, $5500 later I only paid the deductible.

Of course, cost depends on location and other factors.

Thumbs up Re: Insurance for a trike

I use State Farm, when I went to ask about the Trike, she looked it up, as long as I have all the receipts ... still classified as a motorcycle.

Look at older threads As I remember (from the old threads) Progressive, GEICO, and Foremost were generally the easiest to insure, trike-wise. State Farm seemed to be state-specific when it would, or would not, insure trikes. I don't remember if Allstate was OK or not.
Try Markel, they are a motorcycle insurer. Nice customer service and price.

Same for me. No increase in premiums with the conversion.

After much wailing and knashing of teeth while getting quotes for both of our trikes, we went with Dairyland as the most reasonable for us up here in the desert.

Note: most of the companies I contacted used the cost/value of the trike kit as part of the "accessories/optional equipment." My biggest concern was getting the agents to anwers to a couple of simple questions...If some unfortunate accident was to occur, what is the insurance value/coverage? Is there sufficient coverage to replace with a similar, not new, equally equiped unit?

When we had Her Purpleness, a 1995 GL1500 MotorTrike, we had Progressive, and they were very good with us when we had a claim. (If you want to know more, check this thread: http://www.triketalk.com/forum/gener...ssion/8720.htm )

One thing I learned through the process is that most insurance companies insure the bike as it came from the factory, everything else is an accessory. When Progressive totaled the rig what they gave us for the motorcycle portion was smaller than I expected, but it was priced as not having a rear wheel, fender, saddlebags or drivetrain. The accessory coverage made up for that ws lost on the bike portion. The adjuster went over every little thing, even down to how much the pinstriping and Kuryakyn grips cost. didn't take long to max out on accessories.
When we got the new trike I picked a slow day and went to our favorite shop. The parts manager and I went over the trike and went through the catalogs for prices of all the accessories and the installation cost, then figured in the trike kit, installation, paint and options. We have about 3/4 the value of the 2004 GL1800 Champion trike as "accessories", and our insurance pays full value for them up to the accessory coverage we have.

I used Dairyland; I had no problems insuring my trike. I've only had it a couple of months, so no accidents yet. Very reasonable!

Some times the rep we speak with when we call an insurance company don't know what we are really asking. What we are insuring is a motorcycle with additional accessory coverage. That is how Progressive handles it and I think others do also. A trike kit is considered an accessory by most companies. I'll bet if you call back and explain it that way the rep would know how better to respond.

Thanks everyone. I ended up going to State Farm and got a great deal on trike insurance.

Again, thanks to all of the great advice.
