    Default triglide shifting

    There is probably a thread about this, but I need some help with shifting . ie speed and rpms. we have a 2013 triglide and sometimes it makes a knocking noise. Hubby says I am going to slow for the gear. But it sounds to me like it is racing in a lower gear. I don't have enough experience on this and I think his two wheel (fatboy) may run in a different gear or rpm for the same speed. thanks for any advice. This is our first trike and I am really loving it and want to make sure I am doing things right.

    You should be running between 3-4k rpm. You can run a bit under 3k, but much less and you are lugging it which is not good. If accelerating, I usually shift at 3500-4000, depending on how quick I am accelerating. Downshift if RPM gets much below 3k. You can run all day long at 3500 btw.

    The heavy trike will need to be shifted later than the Fatboy which is almost half the weight. One of the 1st time I road a Triglide I noticed I had to be in a different gear than my 2 wheel 06 Ultra Classic.

    Under regular conditions you will find yourself shifting at 3000 rpm. Under conditions where you are pulling out onto a freeway and under heave acceleration you will find yourself shifting between 3500 and 4000 rpm. If you are out on the freeway and riding along in 6th gear and want to have plenty of acceleration to pass then downshift into 5th gear and them pull out to make your pass. 6th gear is considered to be a cruising gear by MOCO. Save yourself and you motor and don't be concerned about downshifting into a lower gear whenever your RPM fall below 2500.

    I ride by one simple rule. If the tach isn't reading 3000 or over I'm in the wrong gear. 3300 seems to be the sweet spot on mine.

    How about in relation to MPG? 70 in 5th at 3300 or 70 in 6th at 2950?

    Depends on the terrain. If it's level, 6th is fine. If you are going uphill, 5th would be better for MPG.

    Forgot to say it's flatter than Kansas here in the San Joaquin Valley. Definitely agree with you on hills. Plus it seems to run cooler 70 in 6th.

    I find that I get better MPG if I follow my rule. My TG is never in 6th unless it is over 70 MPH. Of course we travel loaded like we are moving and pulling a 400 lb. trailer too.

    I agree, these twin cams like 3,000rpm's and will run all day at this level. I have a 120r crate motor in my 2013 TriGlide and still maintain between 2800 and 3200rpms most of the time. The MPG and heat management is the best at this range (for me anyway!), and with the 120r crate motor I do not have to shift back into 5th gear unless I want too.

    However, 60 to 80mph is really quick when there is a need for passing!!pepper
