    Default 1000 mile service?

For those of you that did your first service at the dealer, how long did the service take, what did they do? Also I have heard that the 1000 mile service is pretty expensive. Is that true? I have called two dealers and get two different stories. Appreciate any insight you have.

At my 1000 mile service, I figured MOCO needed to inspect the bike for anything ready to fall off a new bike. I supplied my own oil as they don't sell Amsoil. I purchased an oil filter from them. They had to supply nothing but labor, & filter.

I was charged for 2.5 hr labor. They didn't service the only grease fitting on the TRIKE !

My bill was $239 ! That was the last time they have touched the Trike.

They can do the warranty work & that will be all they touch !

I do my own service & adjustments & work on everything I need done. But a word of caution on that. Keep detailed records on everything you do to your Trike ! Receipts for all the oil & filters & parts you replace !

I told my dealer to not change the fluids as I did them myself. I know they adjusted the clutch which I ended up readjusting again myself. The dealers have different service rates..shop around..I think mine was around 300 buck also..

Our dealer did the 1000 mile freebie on both trikes. A 'normal' service usually runs under $250. i'm not a wrencher and too old to crawl around the garage floor so i let them do their job. Maybe if i was younger.....

I'm in the same boat as Screwball. Too old to be crawling around on the floor. Service at my dealer is also under $250 and I'm lucky in the fact that I have a great dealership with an excellent service department and a service manager whom I trust completely! We've become good friends to boot!

The dealer my dad and I used to do business with always performed the 1,000 mile service free, they would also include an upgrade to Syn3 for very little extra.

I just had my 1000 mile check last week on a 2013<br />
Sportster Trike. The bill was $189.00 at the Harley dealership. They changed the fluids and filter plus adjusted the clutch and tightened anything that may have loosened up. For 2.5 hours work I thought it was a bit pricy. Next time I need service I'll take the trike someplace other than the dealership.

All those low prices I read above are killing me. The less said, the lower my blood pressure. As far as first service, I highly recommend switching to synthetic oil. Was using the HD Syn 3 for years. Recently switched to Amsoil, which they stock. 65K on trike now.

My dealer did the 1000 and the 5000 no charge, i just paid for the Synthetic oil.
Don't remember how long it took, Rode the T/G in at 9am came back at 12noon and rode it home, And they did go though every thing, Adjusted the clutch, brakes etc, and even washed the Trike.....

Bikerbozo, I've mentioned before, there are 6 dealers within 50 miles of my house, so I guess competition keeps prices down. There is a dealer 5 minutes from my house where I buy chrome doodads and warranty work, but for service we ride 40 miles to Antelope Valley Harley. Great ride through the canyons, they do excellent work, are nice people, and remember your name! We ride out there, walk a block to any one of 5 restaurants and after breakfast, both trikes are usually done. Wife got a flat tire on her Deluxe a bunch of years ago. We called to see if they had the white wall tire in stock, they sent out a trailer to pick up her bike, fixed the tire and delivered it, for the price of the tire. They have even offered to pick up and deliver our trikes for service, one of the store Managers lives a few blocks away and would pick up and deliver. How's that for service! Oh, they have NEVER told wife or me "That's Normal"

I ran Syn3 for years until I couldn't get it at 20% off anymore, then I also switched to Amsoil. I run Amsoil in my Harley, my GL1800 and my Kubota diesel tractor. I'd run it or Mobile one in my truck except I lease a new one every couple years and the service including oil changes is thrown in free.

You're killing me Screwball. The main reason I go to my dealer is I trust the mechanic. The people behind service desk have no clue what they are doing and don't even get me started on owner to cheap to send mechanics out for official factory training. No bikes are automatically washed. When I am off Long Island, most dealers are great. I rate Tucson HD and Ozark HD at the top, to name two.

I'm with you. Harley labor for what you actually get is highway robbery. When I looked at the service schedule for the 1000 5000 and 10000 service items I figured I could do most of these myself and do it for around 40 bucks. Harley only worked on warranty items when my warranty was still in effect. Most of what they do on a 1000 mile service, besides the fluids is simply "check" items that anyone can do themselves. My brother in law brought his Triglide to my house at around 10000 miles, we changed all the fluids, checked the items on the list and he did take it in for them to adjust the brake. They charged him $250.00 and CLAIMED they did a 10000 mile service. If you can sit on a stool, most of these items can be done by yourself. Why throw money away.

The only time my bike/trike has seen the dealer here was for warranty work and a couple months ago to get a new ecm and have it programed. I try to do most myself and for what I can't I take it to a independent that is great.

It seems not only do they charge to much for the small labor they do, the parts are high also. This good to know.

There are a few special tools you do need to purchase. But unless you are going into the engine or trans., you don't need to get carried away. But be sure not to take on a repair you don't feel confident in completing ! Or don't have the tools to do.
Be sure to use the proper tool to do the job ! No shortcuts ! It will eat your lunch ! Follow the manual exactly & you shouldn't have problems. It will tell you what tool is needed. Some you can make yourself if you know how, but be careful !

My 1000 mi trike check-up was NO CHARGE. I can't honestly say what was done, but I basically trust the guy. Now approaching 7000 trike miles with no known issues so I guess I'll keep trusting him...

Had my service today. Very satisfied with this dealer, he got the trike right in at my appointment time. 3 hours for the service including the bike wash and full fuel tank. $345 total, about what I budgeted for. No problems found, so time to ride!
