Default Are These Head Temps too High

I pull a camper with my trike. My 88TC is bored out to 98cuin, and I have been seeing head temps (on my PV tuner readout) of 315 degrees at times.

Let's say the outside temp is 80 degrees, and if I run at 60MPH, the temps can rise to 305. If I push it to 70MPH, it rises to 315. It generally runs at just under 300 at 60MPH, but has periods of the 305.

I try to keep it at about 60MPH just because the gas mileage is hit hard going faster (drops from about 30MPG to maybe 24MPG).

I have the Ultracool oil cooler, and it runs constantly after about 45 minutes of running under load. I also use the tune given to me by FuelMoto.

    Is this a problem??

I have been down this road if inquiry myself. Although it was for a 103, not sure if the 103 temps would be the same as the TC88 to 98.

I never got any input on what is ideal, but I did get a lot of responses on what other guys are seeing.

Most seem to be in the mid 200's. 240-260.

That is what I am seeing on my PV read-out also.

Some report as high as 270-280.

It is entirely possible that the cylinder head temp sensor on your 88 is in a different place than on the 103, which would give a different reading.

On my Sportster the sensor is right smack in the top middle of the rear cylinder. I did find that normal reads for this are 360-400.

    Sorry couldn't be more help.

While the tune from Fuel Moto is a close tune it needs to be fine tuned to fit your driving habits & your particular setup. You can do it without a computer with the PV, but is faster to use a computer to do the work in the tune. Also it will still use the factory O2's but they are only accurate within a narrower span that the wide band O2's. Don't know which you have. Jamie is one of the best, but others there can help you with every step in doing the fine tune. That comes with the purchase from Fuel Moto. Great support !
I sometimes see 300*+in the hills without a trailer. Most of the time from 260* -- 280* at highway speeds & around town.
Keep in mind the sensor is in the front head on the 103ci, & the rear head is running hotter. One way to keep these temps down would be a set of Wards fans. FCS fans. Many here can tell ya how they work ! They will help with oil temp also.

I have a 2004 engine that didn't have O2 sensors, so I put wide band O2 sensors on (from Fuel Moto). I tried the autotune thing, but looking at the maps (I guess they are called), all the values were identical to what I got from Jamie and the first tune. Before I noticed the high temps., I called him and asked about better mileage, so he sent me another tune that leaned it out a bit in the middle, but after finding out about these temperatures, I put his original gassier tune back in. It seemed to cool it down a bit.

My head sensor is in the front jug, backside, on the left. So, I suppose the rear cylinder is running a lot hotter.

I've been reading about those fans you mention, and guess I need something for Christmas!

I don't think I have much of a clue about tuning on a computer. Guess I need to call him.

By the way, I "drive" the thing like an old guy, whose wife keeps saying, "slow it down -- you trying to kill us?"

It sounds like Jamie has hit the nail on the head. If there would have been any difference in the tunes it would have showed up.
The leaner tune would have upped the temps for sure. Have you had any problems with heat at all, or you just seeing the head temps & wondering what normal is?
I really don't see much problem there in those temps. But the fans will help. Get with the folks at : Cooling fans - WARDS PARTS WERKS .
He will help you all he can to get a set for your engine. I don't know if the same fans that are for the 103's are the same, but I think they are. This place is great to work with ! Only problem is he is busy busy ! Darn good product !

The temperature sensor is located the same place on all twin cams irregardless of engine MY or size. Is the temp the same while not pulling a trailer?

Yeh, I don't have any physical heat problems, only wondering if the temp is too high.

The temp is less when not pulling the trailer -- as I remember, it never gets above 300.

The extra work is creating more heat. More throttle opening is more work performed by the engine requiring more fule which means more BTU's equals more heat. Depending on where the AFR is set right now you might be able to sacrifice some fuel mileage by tossing a little more fuel at it in the crusing range.

Mine only sees 220 when it passes it on the way up to 255 (my avg) and on the cool down cycle when I am done for the day.

Isn't that 220* & the 255* oil temps ??? We were referring to head temps. Different.
