We live under a government that i would call reactionary obstructionism It seems to move from one self imposed crisis to another.

Every side thinks they are absolutely right and cannot or will not conceed anything to one another regardless of what the voting results prove. The Evidence provided trough observing their daily reactions forces me to beleive they are in it for themselves.

One party or another will come on T.V. and thump themselves on the chest proclaiming that they are striking a blow for the american peolple when that isn't what we wanted to begin with!
It dosent matter!
It's their purpose to convince us that we do want it. and all they need do is hard sell it long enough to make us think we give a damn about it?

Our politicians shut down our govt., stop us from working and supporting our families,
Ruin the stock market where we have our life savings and retirement and save themselves from the impact by benefit of insider trading and they are not held accountable for it?

I know, Who is wrong in this scenario!
The Tea Party, The GOP and the Democrats.
I know, Who is responsible when i look in the mirror!

An honest man,one who would try to make a difference doesn't have the financial means to gain political office.
Other nations do have it over the united states on more than one issue, Until we go there and see that it works we are more willing to believe the statement that we are the greatest country in the world!
What do we have to measure it by?

I am an American citizen, I live here and have no plans to change residency anytime soon
and so must live by the laws of the land, according to the restraints of my sense of human dignity and personal decency.

I sure hope their are others that can see that point of view but it's ok with me if you dont.

What I wish we could do is come together(put political orientation aside)and vote the whole damn lot out and vote new ones in and tell them if they don't stop lining their own pockets and listen to what the AMERICAN PEOPLE want and live by the same rules as we do, we'll get ride of them too. We have the power, we just have to use it. Unfortunately that will never happen. Those that are getting all the free stuff and handout are not going to rock the boat.

I firmly believe our country is lost and we'll never get it back now. Just way too many entitlements.

I guess im not getting to worked up over entitlments as far as it relates to the common citizen, It's the entitlments of those who should be above tweaking the law to their own advantage that chaps my backside.

We stand back and cry:

"TAKE CARE OF AMERICA FIRST!"
"CURE AMERICAS SOCIAL INEQUITES FIRST"
"BOLSTER OUR OWN ECONOMY FIRST"
'STOP BEING THE WORLDS POLICEMAN!"

And yet, everytime we try there are those who tell us to watch out for our personal selves because the bad guy is out to get us, and then try like hell to convince us that the bad guy is everyone except them?

Listen, if you will for a moment?
I would rather see my tax dollar go to promote the welfare of each and every american citzen. I am not a communist but i may lean a might toward socalism when i consider my fellows. Im not against the rich being rich. Whats wrong with universal health care?

Someone says it's really bad because it dosen't suit our intrests when the truth is, it dosen't suit their own!

Democracy is a JOKE anymore!
Democracy is supposed to be MAJORITY RULES, That means if i don't like something i vote against it, and if more people vote for it, then perhaps i should ask myself if they really do have a better idea? Am i to short sighted? Do i not see the whole picture?

Our politicians absolutly do not CARE about the results of the VOTE anymore people!
That is what we have lost! We have Lost DEMOCRACY!

Whether the vote is in your favor or against it, We have lost accountability!

I did't vote for the affordable care law, but i am begining to see some relevance in it.

I have lots of Canadian relatives who really don't find anything so bad about their health system to warrant tearing it down and coppying ours!
When it took five years for my sister in law to die of cancer my brother in law and family didn't loose their home,or car, or savings.
It was bad enough to loose a wife and mother!

What would it cost you?

I would rather give a hand up to the struggling single mom, or a sick child,Or the striving student, Or the family man that works his can off to keep his head affloat.
I wan't our seniors to not have pray for their lives to end, because they can't meet their responsibilities and being unable to reconcile themselves to being a burden on you and i, Just because they are not born that way!

I would gladly see my tax dollar go in these directions than some POLITICIANS PET PORK PROGRAM! OR LINE HIS WAR CHEST FOR RE-ELECTION! OR HIS PRIVATE BANK ACCOUNT!

What happens when you set term limits?

I am getting older now and i see the mistakes our society has made and i don't have the answers to turn them around.
Perhaps, the collective conciense of a true DEMOCRACY may have a chance?

My Daughter is able to stay on my insurace until she is 26 yrs. old, I am on Disability from a bad heart and lungs now after working a lifetime ,just the same as all of us, So Shoot ME!

This country is broken, and it will take nothing less than a miracle to fix it. And it did not start with the shut down.....it started many years back.
I agree with pcombe on many of his points, what he said is a substantial part of our demise.
We live in a country that is more worried about same sex marriage, and policing the entire world, than it is about jobs, and taking care of it's own citizens IMO.

The only time I get worked up over entitlements is when the Govt. refers to my Social Check as an entitlement. It is not an entitlement. It is money that I and the company that I worked for paid into the system for my retirement. All the other free hand outs is an entitlement. What the present Govt. wants is a society that depends on them for everything.

I agree 100% with all of the responses to this thread.

But I also can't help feeling that our great country has seen it's zenith. You know that old phrase, "Every empire eventually falls". I hope to God I'm wrong, but I believe it's our turn in the barrel. Our country is being slowly dissected from within and without and unless some drastic measures are put in place, we may never recover. For all I know, it may be too late already,,,.

Again, I would love to be proven wrong in my fears and prediction,,,.

Want to change things? GET ACTIVE! Go to your representative's town hall meetings if they hold them in your district, get vocal, and demand answers. It's kind of interesting to watch them squirm at times or try to get one of their aides to intervene and shut you up when uncomfortable questions are asked. If your congressional representative does not hold town hall's ask them why not. Write letters or send e-mails about issues that concern you. Believe it or not it does matter - they do pay attention.

I take a magazine called 'The Week' that is a summation of articles about things that happened the week before (kind of like a 'Reader's Digest' of world, national, and local events of significance). Probably violating more than one copy right law, but I make copies of articles that point to a problem and send my representative a copy so they can't say they're uninformed when I attend their next town hall meeting and ask pointed questions.

My guy is a Tea Partier (I don't agree with their agenda), but that's the way the wind blows around here, and, believe me, these people are going to run out ahead of that wind to give the appearance that they're leading the charge.

I didn't post this as a political statement, I posted it because I am beyond sick and tired of hearing all the BS coming from both the GOP and the Democrats, 99% of whom are nothing more than professional politicians, motivated by greed, power and massive egos. Most of them have no real intent of furthering the freedom, security and rights of you and me.

According to a report I just read, the majority of our elected officials are millionaires. Any honest, hard working and well intentioned working man or woman cannot possibly hope to gain entrance into any upper level political office because he or she doesn't have the time, the financial means nor the political support to get elected. We are too busy working our asses off keeping food on the table and our taxes, insurance and mortgage paid. The successful candidates are all hand picked, groomed and heavily financed by their chosen party and its millionaire and billionaire political allies and mega corporations and their special interests.

I have come to believe that the two party system is strangling the life out of this country. Its turning friends into enemies and keeps our government gridlocked. I think the joke is on us because the professional politicians on both sides have assured themselves the means to always get paid no matter if anyone else does, will always have access to valuable insider information and use it to enrich themselves and their families, will always have the golden parachute of a lucrative retirement and a heath care plan that is far superior to ours, this after serving just a single term in office. Hell they write the laws and look out for each other first and foremost, not you and me. Twenty-three out of forty-four presidents have been lawyers and a disproportionate number of our legislators are and have always been lawyers. Therein lies much of our problem.

I posted a cartoon on the shutdown, a week ago that implied everybody (all branches of government were "Turds" for the way they are handling this shut down issue) it was quickly removed.

My point is that we are all being screwed by both sides and I am really tired of the finger pointing and blame game from both sides.

My son is a full time Air Force Reserve airman at Maxwell Air Force Base and was recently furlowed. After one day off, he received orders to return to work as he was classified a "critical support" person needed to keep his unit's aircraft mission ready. Sounded like great news until he found out he would not be getting paid to work, though he is required to work. That is complete BS and I am majorly POed about it. He has rent, food for two, electricity, a car payment, insurance, etc, etc and no means to pay it as his fiance is a full time college student (part time job) so he supports them both, which is tough even when he had a paycheck coming in.

I may be banned from this forum for what i am about to suggest, but i have been thrown out of other places!
I don't normally do this.

Indeed, the social security check as well as my disability are not entitlements and it grabs a gripe from me when it is referred to as an entitlement.

The social security check and my disability check (at least in my case, because i paid into the system all my life) is a debt, owed by the U.S Govt. That is why i continue to receive my check this month and if they go far enough to default on our debt next month thats when i no longer receive that check.
The dept ceiling is giving the Government permission to pay the bills for the money the congress has ALREADY spent.

The national park system is a govt. funded program, And is shut down and the folks who tend to our national treasures are placed in gridlock where they can not support themselves or their family.
The stock market falls and the rainy day funds we planned on to carry us through are vanishing?

Entitlements, are such things as the W.I.C. program (women,infants and children nutrition and health program). They have enough money to last only so long. under the current status will shut its doors.
I do not mind my TAX DOLLAR, going to fund social economic programs that better my fellow man.


There are programs out there that people find loopholes in, to take advantage of, when they do not really qualify for the help ( Are not deserving of the help) Of a social economic program.

Shame on them!

If i let that fact stop me from helping those who do need my help (by the contribution of my TAX DOLLAR.)

The thing i just can't stand is a politician telling me that random acts of kindness (providing a leg up to those in need ) Is a dastardly deed and is the root of all evil in our system! And is destroying our country!

When i step into the voting booth, I know the rules ahead of time!

I vote, If many like minded individuals vote the same as i do, my idea becomes the law of the land.
If more people vote to oppose the ideal i represent, They get to try their idea!
Their idea becomes the law of the land!
I as an americaan citzen am duty bound to live the law of the land, I have to consider that the mainstream of our socity wants to move in another direction than the one i desired.
At this point my thoughts should turn to how can i streamline their idea to make it subsist with my own, After all ,they were the majority.

That is a democracy in action.

That is the ideal that the speaker in that 3 min. video was talking about by us being led by GREAT men with GREAT ideas. And that Is How we became GREAT and How we can become GREAT once again? (after all, he says we were once GREAT which means we have a map to greatness?)

There are Great men in our society with the insite to lead us back on track. And i can see enough collective intellegence exists in the american peolple just by reading the comment's from common folk on this forum. I read ( In this forum) on other threads on other subjects that you seem to know right from wrong and to able to recognize abuse in all it's ugly forms and i see that you also have the ability to recognize and display compassion and are willing to help one another solve a problem. Many, who lay claim to a faith of your own choosing ( therebye the prayer thread). All this is a nessesary comodity in the american people for any thing to work out.

The problem that faces us is to provide a way that the Insitful Man in our society, Can put his ideas into practice.
If that means removing everyone who is currently a proffessional politicain and leveling the playing feild, so be it.

But you have to have the gut's to say, MY REPRESENTATIVE HAS CROSSED THE BOUNDS SET DOWN BY A DEMOCRACY!
iT'S NOT JUST EVERYONE ELSE'S REPRESENTATIVE THAT HAS CROSSED THE BOUNDS SET DOWN BY A FUCTIONING DEMOCRACY!

But do it with the vote!

The term limits that we once set, and that the carrear ploiticians ruled down in federal court and there by saving their political backsides can only exist if we don't force the law that allowed them do so to be changed with the VOTE.

The VOTE changes LAW!

That is democracy in action.
And that is what we have LOST.
And that is what we need to teach the proffesional politician to once again, respect?

it is not the gay, or the senior citzen, or the social security recipient, or the mother with an infant,or the sick child or the downtrodden , or the person that disagrees with your point of view, (add to the list as you please?) that is your enemy!

Your enemy, is the one who continues to tell you that you should not care about anyone but yourself, and JOIN HIM in not caring about anyone else, Because beleive me, You will one day wind up in one of those catagories, And therefore become the one not cared about and HIS socio-economic enemy!
The people in control of our Government would seem to be the people our forefathers warned us about?

VOTE, To change the people at the helm of our government who have lost the concept of a democracy!

the constitution protects me, from me, The bill of rights protects you, from me.
Human dignity and personal decency protect those who would cherish those ideals from those who would destroy us from within, and serve as a barrier to to those who would destroy us from without?
