    Default Mitigating passenger wind buffeting

My wife will ride as a passenger only on the trike. Due to hip problems, she sits on a 5-inch cushion on the passenger seat. The problem is that, sitting so high, she is seriously buffeted by the wind. What are other folks doing to mitigate wind buffeting the passenger? Does anyone have any experience with a Laminar Lip attached to the top of a windshield in a fairing?

    Thanks for your help!

If youre talking about the Suzuki,I had an 03 Intruder with a Cee Baileys 25 in tall windshield and also had the lowers mounted to help with the wind deflection. Heres a link to the C90 windshields.

I've read mixed reviews about the laminar lips, some say they work, some say they don't and some say it cracked their tour-pak lid. If your wife is sitting a good deal higher than you I don't think the lip will help, maybe a taller windshield might do it or a different helmet shape.

Tulsa windshield make a extra tall windshield.
It's called a Plus 4 ( 4 inches taller then the stock one).
See if they make one of your model

Thanks, but my windshield is a short one which came with the Lehman fairing.

Thanks. I am trying to maintain I windshield I can see over for safety reasons. A taller windshield would block my view with dead bugs and raindrops.

I know they have had favorable and unfavorable reviews from users. Your comment about about the tour-pak lid is puzzling because the lip attaches to the fairing windshield. I have read, however, about problems with a Kuryakyn screen behind the passenger seat. Right now, I am just collecting information because my wife is unlikely to want to ride with me until the weather warms up in the Spring.

With your view against a taller windshield youll be beating your head against the wall on this issue. Heres an example. After purchasing my Lehman a few thousand miles and lots of complaints about buffeting I put on a tulsa +4. When the trike was new I had some recall work done and the dealer picked it up so I installed the stock Honda windshield so it would fit inside of his trailer. The saturday I picked it up we were a stones throw from Wisconsin so we left the car at the dealer and rode up into Wisconsin for a nice lunch ride. All the ride did was make my wife remember how good she had it with the tulsa versus the stock shield. All I heard was "You are going to put the other shield on when you get home ,right?". I have full baker wings from the trike wings up to the wings under the mirrors. The missus says the taller shield is what stops her head from getting beat from the wind. So if mommas happy Im happy. A couple of years after putting on the Tulsa Kury came out with their aero foil for the rear. Youll see mixed reviews on it. At that time the missus still smoked. All I can say she could light a cigarette up to 55mph on the trike with that on. Between the Tulsa and the Kury it creates a pocket of air and it also helps to get rid of the backdraft that comes from over the trunk up the riders neck up the back of the helmets. Your experience may vary depending on your helmet height versus hers behind you.

Windshields are another one of those items where everyone thinks theirs is the best. That's good - you should like what you have - if it sucks, try something else.

For my 2 cents, take a look at a "Windbender" from Firecreek Accessories (<---- click here).

In my sig pic, check out the Windbender on my 1500. The height is adjustable (even on the "fly" with the electric option). The electric option was out of my budget, but the manual adjust works for me. In the picture, it's in the lowest position and "throws" the windstream about 2" over my head. At that lowest position, I'm looking at the road ahead about 2" to 3" over the top of the shield. Obviously, if you raise it too much, in order for the windstream to clear the passengers head, you might have to make some other adjustment for you to see over the top. If you look really close at our avatar, you can see the top of the shield vs my eye level. (Thank you, Rosy, for the excellent picture).

Anyway, at least take a look - there's a video, third button down, on the left side of their page, to help explain. Good luck with whatever you choose.

    +1

I am not a "Fan" of ANY Windshield/Screen but there is no denying the benefits of and specific Issues only a Shield (depending on design and height) can Solve. Many are great in their own right and what's "best" for one Rider/Situation may not be for another. Like Bars, Risers, Footpegs, Seats, and so on. Every Bike-Trike/Rider(one up or two) combination is different so the solution is a little different. But, as Mick says,,, Your solution definitely lies directly in your Shield. The "Lip" deal may help but more than likely will not completely solve so is a waste of money, time, and effort.
Another consideration that goes with determining what Shield is the correct solution for you is which Trike conversion. Every Brand's design, width and aerodynamics are different. Whether you have Running Boards or not. The design of the Boards. All those greatly affect the way the wind from the front will flow over or around the rear and sides from what the Shield allows. Lotsa contributing factors. Since you obviously aren't going to change Conversions, you have to change the Input to it. The Shield is the first item in the equation so is the first to suspect and correct.
All the best and hope you can make your Second Up happy. If not,,, well, you know. Might have to learn to co-exist with a taller and wider Shield.

I was thinking about the Kuryakyn screen, for some reason I thought that was what you were talking about.
