Swapped out whatever the crap my dealer put in the trans for Redline Shockproof heavy. I used this in my other Harleys with great results. Didn't dissapoint. Shifts much smoother but still can't find neutral unless I'm rolling to a stop. With my old Ultra all I did was rev it up a bit and look for it while it was winding down. Worked evertime. My trike, not so much.

I found out why the trike felt so “loose” after the rear shocks were installed. I had the FST system installed in the forks and everything tightened right back up. I added 10w fork oil as well for a little firmness in the front. It doubled the improvement over adding the rear shocks. I came home from work and they are working on the interstate. They have cut out the old dotted lines for a lane shift and it’s like a washboard down the middle of the lane. This new FST suspension doesn’t even feel it. I don’t have stagger now going through the zone. I may even increase the preload on the rears to firm them up some as well. Out of everything I’ve done to the trike since I’ve had it, this has been by far the best upgrade and best money spent. Period. I will be hitting 50k within the next month or so and look forward to 50 more.

Smutty, you’re probably as experienced with Harley as I am, but I feel primary lube is more directly related to that elusive neutral. I’m not going to start trouble by making a recommendation, but check out some options and make sure you don’t overfill. Also, I don’t believe your trike came with a heel shifter. Maybe consider one, even if you only use it for finding neutral. An extended lever should not get in your way.

    Good luck!

Always hated the heel shifter. Too confining for my riding style. I do remember doing some fluid swaps in my primary on my old Ultra and finding that ATF made it much easier to find neutral but didn't seem to last very long. And then there's that compensator thing to think about. I might just try putting the heel shifter back on to see if it makes it easier. If it does I can always get an extended one to get it out of the way.

First of all, apologies for misspelling your name. Yeah a buddy of mine really liked the ATF. I’m using Rotella 15w-40 which is JASO DH-2, JASO MA/MA2 for wet clutches. Works well for me. Formula Plus seems to be a good choice as well.

    There, I’m a troublemaker.

The "I" is next to the"U" so no need to apologize. Plus I've been called worse. Guess I'll try some different lubes in the primary too.

Trouble finding neutral might be a bit too much fluid. Make sure you have the exact amount. I had 2 ounce too much in my primary and I had a hell of a time finding it. Took 2 oz out and Voila

Had a new Lock switch put on by the dealer. Had to order a new one with the correct key number. Works good now.

I put the heel shifter back on. I have to admit that I can find neutral much easier.

But twice now I've put my foot down and inadvertently slammed it in gear.

I'm trying to be more careful now while I wait for the new extended shifter to come in. Thanks for the suggestion. It really does work better.

Just to add about the cleanup when I was at the Harley dealer to get oil and filter I bought one of those funnel things that go under the filter to catch the drips: The parts guy said that you’re still going to make a mess sure you want it I said yeah why not and sure enough it did make a mess but I change in my garage and I have a hot water hose hook up and after everything was buttoned up i sprayed the whole bottom of of the engine with degreaser washed it off with hot water and it was good to go I think I’ll just leave the funnel/Drip catcher on my shelf next to all the JC Whitney crap I bought over the years

Bob, have u flushed your clutch fluid?

Before I change oil, i put a piece of cardboard under the filter, poke 2 holes in the filter

Pull the drain plug, let it and filter drain for 15 minutes, no mess even from the filter area

I haven’t done much with the Tri with all of the hot weather, but I did have a Rockford Fosgate 2 sound system installed and I moved the usb plug in the pocket to my tour pack with the help of a USB data extension cable. Now, I have Apple car play with my phone secured in my tour pack. The pocket will hold my keys or whatever from now on.

(Haven’t finished the third brake light hook-up, I am waiting on the LED stop/turn/run side lights. I can install it all in one big swoop, being I have the tour pack apart!)

I am solo, so I am debating the tour pack relocator unit.

    The mods never end.

So Jack, is the cardboard formed into a funnel to divert the oil or to soak up the oil? What about the holes you punch? Are they in the end or the side of the filter? Do you rotate the filter to locate the holes toward the bottom? Over the years, I’ve gotten pretty good at cleaning up my mess, but I will try your method next time. I think I’ve tried everything else (without any success).

Jack, I’m curious, why do you put two holes in the filter? I punch one at 12 o’clock and rotate the filter (loosen) until the hole is at the 6 o’clock position, then let drain. Am I hopelessly antique?
