I need some help from you gals or guys.

I want to buy my bride a small pistol for her to keep in her purse and car.

I bought her an off brand 32 auto for her birthday a few years ago but it is very loud and kicks pretty good so she doesn't like it. She doesn't like any gun come to think of it. She has finally realized that I can't always be there.
I have preached to her for 27 years the importance of self protection and preservation. She is starting to come around.

    What would you all recommend?

I am not looking for an investment$$$$$$$$.

I just want a small auto that has very little kick.

I usually don't buy from a dealer. I don't like the paper trail.

It has to be fool proof. Don't want 2 or 3 safeties. I need her to pull up and shoot.

    Re: Guns?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought a nice little .380ACP double action with a Hammer Block Safety manufactured by BERSA S.A. (Argentina). It's a nice little ladies gun with light recoil but is loud, as are about all of them. I think I paid around $280.00 for it. Even has a keyed trigger lock built into the weapon that disables the trigger when the gun is stored. I've shot about 50 rounds through it and although not very accurate at over about 10 yards it's well built. The .380 is somewhat more powerful than the .32, really it's a 9mm "short" for all intents and purposes, and will get the job done at short range. For the price, I don't think you can beat it for what you're looking for.

    Thank you Greydog.

Bryan, I have a little Ruger 380. Really nice small size. It fits in my hand really well. My favorite, though, is my little S&W LadySmith revolver. Now THAT is a treat to shoot with! But I don't think you'll find a quiet one!!!! LOL!

I like Glocks. I purchased for MJ a Glock 27. It is very nice. Small carries 10 40 cal rounds. So when you hit the someone you are shooting at they are going down. Also push come to shove my Glock 23 13 round mag fit in the 27 so I have lots of available mags. The 27 has just a slight bit more kick then my service 23. MJ likes it a lot and has no trouble shooting it. 10 rounds of knock down power in a gun not any bigger than the Lady Smith. PS it's a gun they all are loud.

Thanks for the tips and recommendations. My daughter in law has a Glock in 22 caliber. Nice small gun.

I am trying to talk her into using my Star 9mm. 14 shot clip plus 1 in the chamber. This one likes to ride in my truck.

She won't even shoot my 45 auto. I call it my hammer because it weighs about 4 lbs. If I run out of ammo, I'll just hit them with it. It was made by a guy in Indiana. It is called a Haskel.
I call it my last resort. It sits by the bed with 6 180 grain hollow points. I think it might have a little stopping power:yes:

My brides little 32Auto is much louder than my 9mm. More kick also?

Hi! I have been working on and studying alot lately about self defense for my wife, and our home. In a previous post, I wrote about being in a position to hold 5 bad guys at gunpoint for 10 minutes till the cops got here. I live in a nice neighborhood that is in a high crime state. My conclusion: An autoloader is good for defense, provided the user is EXTREMELY PROFICIENT with autoloaders. In a real world situation, however, a revolver is king. No worries about remembering the saftey,no chance of pulling the trigger and realizing you had an empty chamber, or wose, having a locked and loaded weapon laying around that you can't remember whether or not it's ready. There simply is NO TIME to go over all this stuff in an emergency! A revolver is always ready, has no saftey to remember, can be very deadly and affordable, and you can find any caliber you would ever need. I chose a .38 special, with a 2" barrel for my wife to carry. It is deadly at ranges that one would encounter in a defense situation, simple to operate, just grab it and pull the trigger.(double action, of course). Also, you need to spend HOURS at the range to allow her to become proficient with whatever you buy her. I love both types, but I wanted something my honey could hanle well, and carry on her person that wasn't relying on a "saftey" to make it safe. Happy shootin'! jimsjinx:cool

    Jimsjinx,

Just to add to your thoughts. A Glock solves all the issues that you are state that you are worried about. The safety is on the trigger. Nothing to look or think about, all you have to do is pull the trigger. The weapon should have one round in the chamber therefore you know it is ready to go. When it is empty it locks back the slide. Glocks are very easy for most women to fire naturally. They are good with being point and shoot technique. My wife shoots maybe once a year and at less than 20 ft she will hit her target.

A small frame .40 cal (Model 27)has 9+1 rounds and it is roughly the same size as that 2" .38 with 5 or 6 rounds and much more stopping power. The small frame 9 mm (about the same stopping power as the .38) Model 26 has 10+1 rounds.

My opinion you would me much better served with a Glock. They are pretty much what we call COP PROOF. That means it will work no matter what.

I agree with you 100%. But, look at the price of a Glock! My wife has some nerve damage to her hands from a misguided doctor years ago, and she fumbles alot with the slide of autoloaders. I forgot to mention that! Anyway, if I had the money for a Glock, I'd for sure have one. The .38SPL. was $100.00. (Taurus). jimsjinx

If you need to use a firearm then your life is on the line. No disrespect intended but this is not an area to be cheap. Glock is a combat weapon proven 1000's of times over, requires little to no maintance. Parts are everywhere and it is simple to fix and operate.

Given her hand nerve damage I would recommend a 9mm, a 40 hits harder but followups will be difficult for her. She needs to be able to empty the weapon without flinching or pain. A hit with a BB gun is better than a miss with a cannon.

With todays hollowpoint Ammo +P there is little difference in stoppoing power anyway between 9 and 40. Spend the money for a high quality ammo defenseive, purchase the same type as local police use.

So short verson, Glock G26 (9mm) Winchester XMT, or Golddots, loaded to 47g. Not to big not too little, no big muzzle blast. Practice till you can put all 10 in the center ring in rapid fire.

Again I mean no disrepect, and a cheap gun beats nothing as long as it fgoes bang every time. My Glocks have never failed me or jamed. I am biased

Id seriously consider one of the small frame 38 snubbys like a Tausus or Rossi with +Ps. They have the stopping power and are foolproof. You can pick one up at a pawn shop for around $150 or so and they are very decent reliable guns and with no safety to fool with.

    Just aim and shoot.

The biggest gun club/shooting range in our area has a considerable number of women shooters and almost every one carries a compact 38 revolver as their self-defense weapon of choice. Its very popular in our part of the country.

I am retired, and the Taurus was in my budget! Like said, an accurate BB hit is better than a .45 cal. miss! I have a 9x18 and love it! I do use Gold Dots, and my favorite carry weapon is my .44 SPL. Bulldog PUG. I't goes bang REAL good, is deadly accurate at defense distances, and packs a whallop. No, don't get me wrong, autoloaders are for combat, that's for sure.
The 38 ruger with +P is a good solution, decent stopping power. Try different loads until you get the a comfortable blast to weight of bullet. Snubbies can punish your hand, if using too hot an ammo, and a hugh flash is not good for a lady.

Great discussion but Jimsjinx has made his purchase. And it is a very satisfactory purchase at that. Tauras is a dependable weapon.

I have been pricing the 38 Taurus and Charter Arms. I have not bought a gun from a dealer in 30 years. I was surprised at how far out of touch I was on hand gun prices

We only have 2 pawn shops near me and they are still priced over $300.00.

The new gun shops are around $369.00.

I may have to cave in and buy a new one?

Anybody local have one for sale? I would drive a couple hours to ensure there is no paper trail from the gov. No, I'm not a criminal (yet)

Here in Phenix City Alabama, I got the .44 for $199 used, in the factory box. The breech of the barrel was nice and crisp, and rifling was sharp. I don't think it has had 50 rounds through it. Northside Pawn is the name of the place, and they only deal in clean well serviced weapons. I was shocked when I saw the price. I later found out that the pistol was mismarked. It was confused with a .38 spl.!!! So I got it CHEAP!. The guy at the shop was very cool about it. I found this out when I returned for some Gold Dots for it.

After getting on the web to check prices, I found some were as much as $500.00!!!!!

I started thinking, my bike is full of gas and ready to go, I could be over there in an hour or so Then I read the rest of your message
I have decided on the 38sp for my wife. I guess I'll head down to Dothan, Al and check out the gun stores. I sure hate the paper trail
