Default Complete 80" harley engine rebuild kit?

    ATTENTION MOTOR HEADS!

I would like to bend your ear if i may?

My old 1989 Tour glide has over 91,000 miles on it and is still running strong but i have an oil leak under the cylinder heads i would like to get rid of.
With that many miles i would like to just rebuild the engine since i have to take it down anyway.

The problem is that it has been about thirty years since i have rebuilt an engine and i intended to do it myself but have the pre-project jitters?
I have lost track of such things?
I have no problem keeping the engine an 80", it has pleased me so far, and has powered my trike to my satisfaction.

At 40,000 miles i put in a one step hotter cam ( can't remember what the numbers on it were?) and would like to do the same this time around.( i wouldn't want to loose any power)

Question: Does Harley offer a complete 80" rebuild kit rather than having to buy individual components and would you have an idea of the cost?
I am just starting to look into the project and your guidance has been good so far!
I think i am leaning toward OEM Harley parts?

Sounds to me that all you have is leaking base gaskets. You'll have to pull the jugs and while you're in there just check the tolerances on the pistons and rings. At 91K they probably could stand being changed. Since you'll have the rocker boxes off just get a gasket kit and change them out.

If it ain't broke bad then don't mess with it as far a rebuilding everything unless you're going to be bored over the winter and really want something to do.

A few years ago I went through the MoFoCo and had the engine on my 1990 FLHS remanufactured at 97,000 miles. I took the bike in to the HD shop, they pulled and sent the engine out and a few weeks later I rode out with what is basically a new motor. In Joplin MO, including tax the whole deal came to $3100 for the silver and polished motor. I have a buddy that owned an indie HD shop and he said he couldn't rebuild a motor for that. Just for curiosity, before I sent it out I marked the cases, jugs, heads, etc.with dots from a punch, and all the parts looked new, none were marked when it came back. If you have adjustable lifters, cams etc, replace them with stock parts if you want to keep them, as the engine is returned to the latest stock configuration for your engine (Evo, Twin Cam, counterbalanced of no, etc) and you won't get any custom parts back.

Yep, I'm really going to be bored over the winter my friend!

Last winter i had a trike to build and my knuckles have healed up to the point where i received a letter from the band-aid manufacturer and he had another kid to put through college, and just about begged me to start another project.
gotta help them out you know?
Also got a letter from Budweiser, The Clydesdale's ribs are beginning to show!

Agreed! Don't make it any more complicated than necessary. While you're at it, add a Hayden Ent. "The Oil Fix", and you won't have a weeping base gasket again.

Well i checked out the link and i could have Harley factory do the job for under $3,000 so my dealer wants $1,200 to do the labor of removal, shipping and re installation. I have seen entire motors sell for less than that. I guess they only warranty the engine if the Harley shop does the work?
When i built my trike i went in and changed the drive belt and put on new pulleys and lacked about two bolts of yanking the engine, i wish i would have had the dough to do the engine then?
    Man thats a catch 22!
I don't now if i can afford that option, I had to milk the dog to feed the cat this morning!

Hayden Enterprises makes a product for Evo motors called "The Oil Fix". http://www.haydensm6.com/tof_single.htm Its a fitting that bridges the oil passage between the cylinder and cylinder base, so that return oil never touches the gasket. In theory, you should not have any weeping of the gasket. I've had mine in the FLST for 8 years; so far not a hint of oil!

I would tell you to put your stock engine on the shelf and buy another if you dont plan on having HD rebuild it for you. The casting for Evo engines had issues with the cast collar on the left engine case around the crankshaft on models from 1988 to 1991. Both my 1990 Ultra and my buddies 1988 FXR developed the same crack in the casting. I had sumping issues with my engine sucking in the primary oil into the engine case until it was so full the engine puked oil out the breather until it lowered the oil level within the engine oil system. My buddies FXR did the opposite and sucked in engine into the primary until it was so full his clutch would not work. We both got HD to replace them under warranty back then.

Here is a complete 107" for a few hundred more than the cost for a HD engine rebuild with a 12k/12 month warranty

I just picked up an instructional video on evo-rebuild that has a live mechanic walking clear through the process Begin to end, that should clear the cobwebs off the memories of old engine rebuilds and allow me to go ahead.

I picked up and saved ideas from you guys and info. on new parts i never knew about that i intend to put to good use.
I may ship some parts to Harley factory for re-build as i don't yet have a Harley knowledgeable machine shop in my pocket yet, but i have all winter to plan ans save up some bucks for the project.
