30-06 vs 7mm

Well seems the 30-06 I thought I had nailed down wasn't meant to be.<br />
However, also seems that was a good thing. Right after that &quot;fell through&quot; (sold out from under me for higher price), found a Browning A-Bolt Medallion in .270 WSM in fantastic shape and hardly shot and beautifully finished American Walnut stock. It's already equipped with Simmons 3x9x50mm Scope with quick-open covers and Browning leather Sling for same price as I was going to give for the X-bolt with no scope or mounts or sling with Synthetic Stock. Drove immediately after finishing the negotiation and sealed the deal before the Ether wore off as with the previous &quot;turd&quot; of a Seller. <br />
Did some research and found the .270 WSM to have less drop than the -06 (only 5.5&quot; drop at 300 vs 8&quot and according to Ballistic Charts has very near the same Power and Force with a tad less recoil. Of course the Ammo is less plentiful with fewer variations and does not have as large of a selection &amp;range of Bullet weights. Also the ammo is about 60% higher per box of twenty on average but bought it to kill and not target shoot so not too much of an issue. <br />
Overall,,, well pleased and can't wait to fire and check the Scope Zero tomorrow. Thanks again to all for the advice, input and sounding-board. Hate to admit it but I was unaware of the Caliber so never even considered it although I did the straight up .270<br />
After I get a couple boxes shot through it I will post the results and thoughts.<br />

i personally own a weatherby 270wsm and just really like this gun. i have never shot a animal with this gun and caliber that did not just drop after being hit and never got up again. i have shot deer and some big boar hogs here in Florida and they all just dropped dead quick. glad you picked this caliber and i know you will really like the results of your gun. i shoot 140gr ballistic tip ammo from Hornady and think this bullet will be the answer to whatever you want to hunt. good luck and shoot straight.

Thanks Dan &amp; All. Great confirming Testimonial to the caliber. I had planned on using the 140 grain Ballistic or Nosler AB round in same weight. I have long been a Hornady Guy and use their ammo in every Weapon I own (cheaper stiff for practice, target, and sighting of course) but didn't see that they made a .270 WSM round. Thanks for the correction and Intel Cap't <img src="images/smilies/thumbup.gif" border="0" alt="" title="" class="inlineimg" /> You get those online or local? I have looked on Sportsman's Guide and other Sites including Hornady and didn't see any. Will have to ask the Guys at my local Shop about some tomorrow. Do you know the drop using those Hornady 140s at 300 if Zero'd at 100? Actual data from you having shot them would be trusted and appreciated.<br />
Check the Zero today and really excited to fire this weapon. Giddy as a kid actually.

Only came with five rounds. Seller said he bought one box when bought the Rifle and those were all he had left so guess it has only been shot 15 times. Won't really be able to Zero as much as see where it's at and get a heck of a Rush between Games. Gonna pick up a box of Cheapos tomorrow and really nail it down when off on Wednesday.<br />

Looks like they sell Brass &amp; Bullets to &quot;roll your own&quot;. <br />
Not my cup of tea so probably stick to Nosler 140 AccuBond or Barnes VOR-TX 140 BT for hunting shells.<br />
The Winchester Silver Tip 140 looks to have tested well also.

i buy reloaded ammo from Georgia Arms and they will reload almost any bullet you want to shoot out of your rifle and are quite inexpensive. the ammo is very, very accurate as it is reloaded with the very finest reloading equipment available, probably as good or better than factory loads. i just shot a big boar hog last week with this bullet, about 250lbs. and it just kicked a few times after it was hit. as i was skinning out this hog i noticed he had a wound on his rear right leg and when i got to that point he was full of geingreen. well that took care of that as far as ever eating this hog but i wanted to see what damage was done by the bullet so i opened him up. the bullet was not a pass thru as it entered just behind his front shoulder, hitting the big shield that he had and just destroyed his insides, he was not going anywhere. the 140gr. ballistic tip bullet will kill anything in medium sized game from deer to elk including black bears as i have shot all of them with my 270WSM weatherby and they all just dropped instantly. the only animal left on my bucket list is a moose and i know i cannot afford that hunt unless i win the lottery.

Georgia Arms huh,,, I will have to look them up. So you can specify the &quot;recipe&quot; and the caliber and they will &quot;cook&quot; it up accordingly?<br />
I was already firm on a 140 grain but you use Hornady Ballistic Tip I take it?<br />
What Powder weight/volume do you prefer or just defer to their judgment?<br />

Went to their site and they show one choice for .270 WSM. A 140 grain AccuBond. Unfortunately they are out die to lack of components at this time. But, will definitely keep checking back as at $47 per 20 rounds for top-notch Ammo is CHEAP. Comparable Nosler is around $55-$60 and the Barnes right at $52.<br />

just went and looked at a box of ammo i bought from them and the box says 770-459-5117 Precision Plus 140gr ballistic plus (new ammunition) fps 3000 and the cost was $32.50 per box. the tip of the bullet is yellow and they come in a plastic box. call them and see if they still make this ammo and if they do buy a couple of boxes and you will not be dissatisfied. it has been about 3 years since i bought this ammo from them but i am sure that any of the ballistic tip bullets they can make for you will shoot great and do the job intended.
