    Default Insurance?

Are there insurance companies that specialize in covering trikes? Or do you register it & get coverage as the brand & model it was before it was a trike? Like a Goldwing or Harley or what have you? I know some of the home built ones are registered & insured as the car model engine that powers it, like VW?

You should check insurance regs in your state of residence. Here, I have mine insured as the original motorcycle, with the trike kit & other parts added as accessories, thru Progressive Ins.

Same here, Progressive has been reasonable with me, although I have never made a claim against them so not sure if they honor that.

I informed Allstate that I had converted my FLH bike to a trike. Gave them the new much higher value. My premium actually went down a bit. I think trikes are apparently considered safer and harder to steal. As far as state tag, it is still a bike. I was advised not to change that.

I just bought a trike and had it insured in October. I called my agent and went to see him armed with a list of all the prices for the trike kit plus the trike kit accessories that I got from the dealer plus a list of all of the other accessories that I looked up the part numbers and prices for. We did a walk around and took a lot of pictures so I could point out everything. He took all of that information and called his adjustor to come out so they could go over everything to make sure it was all covered and then took it to the person above them to make sure everybody was on the same page and that the insurance company and I were both satisfied that they were insuring what I have. My agent decided that two other trikes that are insured thru him may not be insured for enough.
I am covered for a 2009 Goldwing audio group, plus a Roadsmith Trike kit with accessories that are offered as part of the trike kit. These are the accessories that I have because of the trike such as the wheel upgrade, aqua boards, bras, etc. that I would not have bought if it had been left as a two wheeler. The insurance company then allowed $3600 dollars for other accessories that I purchased. That isn't quite enough in my case so I am paying an additional sum to increase that amount to $6500.

I am satisfied that I am covered for a reasonable amount and my agent is comfortable with everything. Both of us have copies of the pictures with notes and the price list of everything with part numbers. It took a little extra work on my part but after reading about some people's problems with their coverage and not having enough coverage I wanted to make sure I am covered.
It also helped that my agent is an old friend and also rides.
I almost forgot. I have Farmers Insurance.

    State Farm in Indiana:
After calls and sit downs w/agent including calls to home office the bottom line:
No increase in premium, although value was doubled!! Took plenty of pictures and copied all receipts. The conversion is covered as an accessory. No limit on accessory coverage!!!!

I have shown both of my trikes to my insurance agent, given him the market value, and the policies show them insured as motorcycles. Currently have Progressive and their rates seem pretty reasonable.

I'm actually looking at a VW trike conversion. Front end is from a Honda CB something or other, business end is from a VW van. When I called for insurance (want to be ready when I pull the trigger) I've been told it's not insurable by some of the top names (Allstate, StateFarm, Farmers, Geico and Progressive). Haven't called any of the local strip mall types because to be honest I don't trust em.

I've seen that in texas you title it as what the front end is. I'm not comfortable with that b/c if I'm in a wreck and the engine gets totaled, I'm sure I'll be in a fight with them about value etc.

I'm not going to pay a lot for this thing, but that doesn't mean I want to go too cheap either. Current ride is a 2010 Triglide, insured through Geico, who also said no. They did suggest asking about it as a "Salvage - assembled spare parts" which I've never heard of.

Anyone in Tx have a vw trike that can chime in?
You don't have to re-invent the wheel. Just buy a wheel and modify it.

Something to check into which may be effecting your insurance responses.A few years ago there was alot of talk about Texas no longer registering "homebuilt" trikes. I don't know how that ended up but its worth checking into.

This is what I was thinking of but I haven't followed it so further research is needed. https://www.triketalk.com/forum/thre...ight=homebuilt

Every state has their own insurance regulations and every company may have different rules in every state. It totally depends on where you are and the state insurance regulations in that state

    Default Insurance Scams

Something I am pretty excited about ... but pi$$ed at the same time is my new insurance.

I have been with Nationwide for over 10 years, and before that Geico for over 10 years and before that Progressive.

I haven't had an incident or ticket in over 25 years either.

My semi-annual insurance premium arrived with much reluctant anticipation and I decided to contact my agent to see if we could somehow lower the rate.

I have my home, motorcycle and cars all insured with Nationwide to gain the best deal, or so I thought.

The Agent gave me the regular company line .. blah blah blah .. and told me I was getting the best rate.

    Soooooo, I went shopping !

I went to Liberty to see Limu-Emu and Doug with the same (even better) coverage on my cars and was quoted a rate less than half of my rate with Nationwide.

I went to the Nationwide agent in person and showed him the coverage and rate. He just threw his hands up in the air and said he would drop the Nationwide policy if it was simply a one year only rate. I never realized how much I was being overpriced (screwed).

Liberty $812.00 per year w/1 yr premium

Progressive $1104.00 per year w/6 mos premiums

Geico $1279.00 per year w/6 mos premiums

Nationwide $1986.00 per year w/6 mos premiums

Full coverage/comp with $500 ded. max liability 300/300/100,000

The creeping premium was my reason for changing insurance companies in the first place.

I just thought I would spread the word and the joy.

I have left AT&T, C&P and Bell Atlantic due to creeping bills as well.

I have been with Markel for 2 years now & shop every year but I cannot touch their price.

2017 Freewheeler & I have full replacement insurance for $572 a year & that is with trip insurance/towing.

They also have a deductible that vanishes every year by 25%. They don't do cars/homes, but bikes/trikes, campers, boats, etc.

I have Progressive and they covered everything just fine but will not cover my ex-wife that rides on the back at all times.
