    Default You trust the FOB?

I don't trust the fob [security] I have had my Harley for about a year now and I know I will have to replace the batt. in the FOB soon, so instead of having to worry about when that batt. will fail I have been thinking about disabling it and just using the key to lock the ign. sw.

Have any of you done this ? Thanks.

Neither the 09 or the 11 have ever given us a problem. The first thing I did with both was to program the bypass code 'just in case'. I've had friends who lost their keys and fob, or had the battery die in the middle of nowhere and didn't bother to program the bypass. I think the instructions are on page 21 or 22 of your owners manual.

    Good Luck

I have had the FOB on three different bikes. 2 of them I still have.

Never had one fail. I do keep an extra battery. I also keep the notes and code on how to override it manually.

A few years ago I forgot the FOB, and at first thought I was stranded.

Then I remembered the manual override. Pulled out my note and got it started up without the FOB.

Disable your security system & watch your insurance almost double ! Or not cover if they find out after the trike gets stolen............ Take the time to do the security pass for the system & carry the instructions in your wallet along with the security code. That is unless you loose your wallet also.

I always carry two sets of keys (and keyfobs). Mostly because I learned way back when that I misplace keys or lock them in cars. I do like the idea others have said about carrying spare battery. Mine are probably due for replacement around now anyways (3 1/2 years old).

Never had an issue with the FOB. As far as the by-pass coding, learn it. I set mine (5 digit) to my zip code so I won't forget it.

One the FOB/by-pass issue. Climbed on my bike one morning for a weekend ride over into New Mexico. Got to my first gas stop......no FOB. Then I remembered I had it in my jacket but after starting my bike decided to wear another jacket. Hung my jacket up in the shop, put on the other one and rode West.......with no FOB.

If you have the security system on your trike I wouldn't disable it. But even with the security system not disabled I would still lock the ign and the forks.
People tend to put to much faith in security systems. They do not make your vehicle theft proof. They do help deter some thieves and any steps you take to secure your trike or bike is in your favor but if an experienced thief decides he wants your trike or bike he will get it no matter what you may do. It happens every day.

The only way to permanently disable the FOB/security system is to replace the TSSM. There is a learnign process to tell the bike that you have a new TSSM as well, no idea what it is.

Like others I always carried a spare battery on the trike, I also changed the fob batteries every year just to be sure. I've had 4 Harleys with fob's and never had an issue.

I always replace the fob batteries in all my fobs on New Year's Day. Easy to remember.....Batteries are cheap on ebay. I also carry a spare battery just in case a friend's battery goes dead.

The only other thing I would recommend is to have an extra key cut, make sure it works, & find a secure place to hide it on your machine that is out of sight to everyone.
The reason is that you could loose the fob and your key with it. You then can at least unlock the handlebars & switch then be able to use the start code. If you choose to hide an extra fob on the bike be sure to turn the battery over so it won't work until you want it to. I don't like to go that far. If I was to steal your bike, I would be looking for all the extra things to make it mine, & with a fob you just did it ! If it wouldn't work I would be sure to check or change the battery !

I have had two bikes with the FOB security system and no problems. However I did drop the FOB once. The bike started because the FOB was beside it on the ground, however when I went to start the bike the next time after stoping later it would not. The FOB disables starting.... not running. If you drop the FOB (as I did) or just have it sitting near you when you crank up your bike it will run fine until you turn it off. The key is to know your PIN and how to override the security system and you will not need the FOB.

I agree with geezer glide, if someone really want your bike, they will get. I actually wanted our TG without the security system. I talked to a lot of people who had it on their bikes and all of them said that they wished that it wasn't on there. Just for the mere fact of the battery issue and it always has to be with/on the person at all times.

My 2013 TG did not come with security. But I have other Harleys with it. One instance my fob was on the kitchen table, and the bike was in the drive way. It started and I didn't think anything of it. I rode off to my destination. I shut it off before I realized I didn't have my fob. After a call to my wife to bring me the fob, I burned the pass code into my brain. By the way she wasn't a happy camper!!!
