My son has a 2014 TG 2 weeks old. Rode it to work the other day and came out to go home, attempted to start it, check engine light stayed on, wouldn't crank or make a sound. Thought it was a dead FOB so got a ride home and tried second FOB - same thing. Tried multiple times to start with no luck. HD came to pick it up several hours later and of course it started right up. They towed it anyway and as of today found no start codes(?) or error codes. Still looking it over but doesn't look hopeful they will find anything specific.

Thoughts? Are their diagnostics good enough to identify a problem? In other words, if nothing was found is it a safe bet this won't happen again and strand him.

This is his first HD and Trike so has currently lost a certain amount of confidence in it.

May not be this at all, but last time someone here reported a similar problem with their TriGlide it turned out to be a loose battery connection or loose ground, cant remember which. Seems like that would throw some sort of code but in their case it took some looking and fishing by their local Harley shop to figure it out.

Just throwing this out, Might help...
It happen to me a few times, With my 11 T/G. At first i thought it was the fob.. Then i just turned the ignition switch on and off and on then it started right up...

Update: had the bike all day and found nothing. Went to move it to store it overnight and it would not start, same symptoms as my son described to them initially. They actually apologized to him for doubting his story and attributing the situation to "new rider error".
Still not a solution at this time. These intermittent problems are concerning.

Something that you might want to try. I had the same problem on my '11 TG when it was new. The electrical connection on my starter motor was loose. I probably bumped it when I was cleaning off the motor. I took it to a harley dealer in Atantic City when I was out there and he moved the wire and it came apart. The connection is right next to the starter motor.......

My 2014 TriGlide requires me to have may brakes applied along with clutch disengaged to start in gear????

UPDATE:

They said today that they found some sort of a short located in the right side panel(?). My son wasn't exactly sure what they were referring to. In any event they are ordering some part which will take 7 to 10 days to receive so I have no idea what they are replacing. Not very specific at this point. Will have details at some point later. Any ideas?

he didn't by chance shut it off by using the kill (run) switch on the throttle side and forgot to turn it back on did he???....I always just use my ignition switch to shut mine off. my brother took mine for a ride & when he parked it he turned off the run switch. when i went to start it, it took me a second to figure out what was wrong......that might be why it started when the dealer came to pick it up & it started right up for them.and started every time since..... maybe kickstand down, or,in gear, or,clutch not pulled in.....I always check the little things first...cause i've done some silly things like that myself....lol

Anything was a possibility, however when the dealer went to move it for the evening while in the shop, they couldn't start i either, with exact same issues that my son experienced. They actually, kiddingly apologized to him when they told him the finally duplicated the problem and thought the original issues were "new owner error". Made him feel a little better. Thanks for the response.

My son got his Trike back on Monday, so he hasn't really rode it a lot. The work/service order stated that they replaced the switch housing part # 71500130. This took 9 days to get in, not sure why. As stated in the original post when they were getting ready to tow it, it started right up. They were checking things at the dealership and not coming up with much until they went to move at the end of the day and the same thing, not starting, happened to them.

At that point they were able to identify the intermittent problem and ordered the switch housing. Hope that takes care of the problem. He has started it quite a few times since home and so far so good. It needs a good ride to feel comfortable with it.

I cant tell you for sure on the new ones but on an older model Harley it is possible for the electronic brain to function intermittently.
I know they are supposed to fail utterly but i have seen it happen before?

I once disconnected and reconnected the battery wire on a friends tri-glide and reset the computer.
It didn't fix the problem for good but it got him home,

A bad battery might have an effect, but if they found it in some component already i will shut up now!
