High Idle

I tried searching and couldn't find anything. My TG has a very high idle when stopped. It runs around 1000 rpm and it feels like its going to take off on me when I let off the clutch. Any ideas? I used to be able to get it to settle down when I blipped the throttle or letting it warm up a lot before riding. But now it does it all the time. I have a pcv and vance& hines slip ons, but that is all I have had done engine wise and exhaust wise. I have 6300 miles on it.

I'm pretty sure my '08 Ultra normally idles at 1000RPM after warm-up. It's slightly higher right after start-up but settles out after about 20-30 seconds in warm weather and a minute or so when it's colder. Your owners manual should tell you what the normal idle speed should be but I think 1000 is pretty normal. My bike is in the shop or I'd go out and fire her up and let you know for sure!!

Greydog's absolutely cottect, the MoCo reccomends the idle at 950-1000.

Idle sound is not of prime importance to me, but most of my HD friends (including one TG rider) have dialed them back to get more of that famous "potato" sound while idling.

I'm a bit more of a mechanical purist and prefer to have the better oil circulation during idle, but I don't know of any failures due to low idle.

That's pretty much the nail on the head.

There is a temp sensor on the motor. It reads different ohm's to the ECM which calculates the idle speed to the motor temp that is on the ECM map. (long story short)

IHP.. if you have to blip your throttle to reduce idle when it is already warm, and I know you don't have a cable throttle, then you may want to recalculate the fly-by-wire settings.

I know there is a way to do this by turning on and off the bike a certain number of times and pressing a hand control switch. Sorry but I don't have fly-by-wire so I don't remember how to do this.. anybody?

The only other reason it would surge would be an air leak on the EFI throttle body. This is not that common but not uncommon either after a bike mileage break in. Easy fix and your warranty will cover it.

All correct by me. 1000 r's is the correct idle. Where did it idle b-4 this?

Turn your "run" switch to on and leave it on. Then turn main main power (key) on for 8 seconds / off for 4 seconds / repeat 3 more times without delay. (honestly, this might be one more cycle than necessary, but I cant recall for sure)

start the motor. If you have the same idle control logic ... you will have just reset your idle speed to factory. Cure = let it idle down before shutting it off.

I missed that she has a PCV.

IHP, the Power Commander units have a throttle setting for 0 throttle position and WOT (wide open throttle)

Jamie, at Fuel Moto, has said many times not to adjust the WOT when you have fly-by-wire but you have to adjust the 0 throttle position using their main software.

Do you know if this was done? If you don't know then put the PCV back on the computer, warm up the bike and make sure it's set but reset your fly-by-wire first (see above)

Thanks! Today I rode, temps in the upper 70's,low 80's and no surge in idle. I did look yesterday and I could have sworn it was around 1000 rpms or a little higher. The other difference in yesterday , was it never stopped feeling like it was over revving, even though it was good and warmed up. When it is like that, I have to really slip the clutch to keep it from jumping ahead. Maybe, I am just being silly! But there was a big difference from today and the other day with temps slightly lower.

IHP... your PCV was programmed with a fuel map but when your PCV was physically installed the throttle position must be set to the bike/trike so the PCV can synchronize the map cell with the throttle opening.

I'm sure it's not that big of a deal and seems to be working OK. But, if you guys are mess'n around with the trike this winter you may want to check that.
