Hello, this is my first post. I am looking forward to participating.
I am finishing (working out the bugs) my trike. I am using the Susuki 1400 intruder. Everything is complete, I have one problem I can't get past. The rear brakes, I can't get them to release. I am using the Datsun 510 rear end. I bleed, then when I test drive the brakes don't release. I am hoping the members might have an idea.
The bike runs great, the power and handling is everything and more then I had hoped for.

Hello and welcome to the website from the U.P. of Michigan. Saying you are from the. USA covers a lot of area. But hope you get your problem figured out.

Two things to check.
Pull the drums and make sure all the parts are in there,like the brake shoe return springs.
If its a fluid problem,most likely the fluid return hole in master cylinder clogged.That's a very tiny hole inside bottom of master cylinder.

What master cylinder are you using?

I really Dont know your situation, no pictures, and someone might kick in and help me with this thought?

It seems i read a discussion on the forum about some brake splitter blocks containing a check valve that wouldn't allow fluid to flow back very well and preventing brakes from releasing?

You might use the search feature at the top right of the forum and run that conversation down?

Also goggle Datsun 510 brakes and bleeding ?

I use a power bleeder i got from harbor freight (cheap) to help bleed the brakes.

Also, i read someone suggest the hole in the master cylinder being plugged.
These are drum brakes and Datsun 510 is pretty old?
You might want to check the slave cylinders wear parts? (springs, push rods and rubber seals and boots) Kit them, and hone the cylinders with an inexpensive brake honing tool?

Welcome to Trike Talk for SE Missouri. Sounds like your problem is in the master cylinder, like said before not having my hands on it make it hard to say what the problem is.

Thank you for all your input. Forums like this are awesome, when members contribute. I think the problem is a combination of issues. The most serious is the rubber brake line. The line runs next to the exhaust. When the engine heats up the rubber is acting like a check valve. As suggested, I am rebuilding the master cylinder.
In other threads, members mentioned check valves helped with the brake lines. Has anyone installed this, and do you have any comments? Was it positive?

I have seen rubber brake lines separate inside and act like a valve, especially near exhaust pipes or if they have been twisted a lot such as in steering application. Just a thought.

Thank you I think your right and that is my problem. Today I exercised the brakes several times, no issues. I started the trike and heated up the bike. When the engine ran for 15 minutes, I pressed on the brakes and the brakes locked up. Heat was the only difference.

Makes sense most drum brakes have a check valve in the master to stop too much back flow to keep a good peddle....... but if the exhaust heats the rubber hose the fluid expands which would be like putting your foot on the brake... add more with the peddle and you have lock up... heat shield + get the hose as far from the heat as possible might be called for

Yes I ordered stranded line and I am planning on getting it away from the pipes. I'm surprised Suzuki runs it where they do.
