    Default Waiting for spring

    Since its been a little to cold to ride, I decided to do a few things on my trike that I thought I would do before some good weather came along. I decided to tackle that chore of replacing my air filter and re-torque the stem bearings since I had not done it since installing my rake kit I got from bazooka. I also decided since I had it apart I would make the air cleaner mouseproof since I had seen some activity by them in my garage. The air filter that I replaced was in pretty good shape and not as bad as I had guessed. Buying a used bike with no records of maintenance made me do service to get a starting point. So far all has gone well and it has gave me a little something to do while I wait for good weather, plus I have gained a lot of knowledge about my Goldwing trike that I did not have before.

    How many miles on the trike??
    My air filter is still the great unknown on my used trike.
    From what Ive gathered reading the manual.
    Removing the cowling etc to get to the filter seems to be a major time consuming issue for 1 part.
    With only 16K on mine. Im putting it off for the foreseeable future.

    I have about 33,000 mi. on my 07' 1800 and since I did not know if or when the filter was replaced I decided to do the task and yes it is a rather lengthy process. It is something I will not have to worry about for awhile. The filter was in good shape though.

    I just got my 2003 Goldwing last fall with a CSC Trike kit. It has 17,000 mi. on it. I don't see any record indicating the air cleaner has ever been replaced. I have heard, and you confirm, it is a substantial job.

    A few questions: Do you know where I can get a step by step procedure to do this? What type/brand of air cleaner do you use for replacement? I've put K&N's on all other bikes and my other vehicles... would you recommend going with a K&N? I'm new to Goldwings but have owned many other rides and I'm a fairly decent wrench on most of light mechanics of rides and cars. I just ordered a Deka ETX20L battery for it... I've had very good luck with Deka AGM's. Thanks for any input you can share. Craigar in Utah

    Fred Harman on gl1800 riders forum has a step by step with photo's. also steve saunder on Goldwing facts .com has a video good luck and take your time and take pictures of each connection so you get them all back togather right. Its a bummer to get it all back togather and it starts throwing FI codes. Don't ask me I know this.

    Yes, it is a tedious job but really not that bad. Fred Harman video and steve saunder video really helped. A lot of connections to take apart but just take your time. As far as throwing codes, I guess I will have to wait until that first ride takes place..It started, ran for about 10 min. and all went well. Here's hoping....

    There are on line videos by Fred Harman and Steve Saunders Goldwing 'forum that will make it a easier job. It helps to be able to turn a wrench. As far as the filter replacement, I stayed with OEM. K&N is a great filter also. I would suggest if you tackle the job, go a bit further and mouseproof the air induction tubes. It gives you peace of mind when you see what those little buggers do when getting ready for winter nesting. Just a suggestion..
