Directions to Yellowstone from Iowa Wing Ding

Hi Everyone,

My wife & I have decided that we are going to Wing Ding in Iowa next year. We want to continue on to Yellowstone and would appreciate some info from someone that knows that part of the country. We have heard so much about everything to see out there we don't want to miss anything.

We are starting from Charlotte NC and will ride out to Iowa with our GWRRA group. After Wing Ding we want to see Yellowstone and then we want to go thru the Black Hills across to N. Michigan and turn south to see family in Flint MI.

Sounds like a great trip. We went from Sturgis to Yellowstone then the Grand Tetons. Before we got to Yellow Stone we took a trip from Cody up to Chief Joseph Highway and then the Beartooth and back. Highly recommended. Just follow your maps and give yourself plenty of time because there is a lot to enjoy.

I recommend Map Quest. You can plug in waypoints, big v. little roads, etc.

I wonder why the company selected Des Moines? There are only straight roads and 90 degree corners in the area.

You definitely have a number of places to see depending how much time you have for the trip. As you work west you have the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park(large roaming herd of Buffalo) THe Blackhills, Deadwood, Devils Tower in Wyoming, Little Big Horn (Custers last Stand. Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons are fabulous and if you have the time you may want to go north and include Glacier National Park in your journey. The scenery is marvelous and you can tailor the sites to what you have time for.

When in the Yellowstone area do not miss Bear Tooth Pass! Fantastic view up on top & LOTSA switch backs & twisties. It's between the North East corner of Yellowstone & Red Lodge MT. Figure on a couple of days at Yellowstone -- LOTS to see there. Since you're out this way, from Glecier NP head on over to the coast & take Hwy 1/101 (LOTS of twisties & beautiful scenery) down to San Francisco & see the Golden Gate, then maybe head east on Hwy US 50 -- one of the few coast to coast highways. Beware! If you take 50 across NV, it's called "The Lonliest Road". We even have a passport for crossing Nevada that you have to get stamped at all the towns across the State. Don't worry, there are only 6! Unless you can run 150 miles on a tank of gas, be sure to get gas at Baker before heading into Utah. There's a little self serve station there that works on plastic 24-7. Next gas from there is 83 miles -- Baker is 61 miles from Ely. Be aware that Nevada has a lot of "towns" on the map that are little more than a bar & grill that maybe used to sell gas (like Major's Station) & some not even that. Be sure to plan gas stops in the West it can be a LONG way to the next town!!
