Helmet saved my wife's life

My wife's Sportster/Motortrike trike was rear ended by a guy speeding on a Harley Ultra Classic. She was thrown off her trike and her head hit the road twice. Either strike could have killed her according to the emergency doctor.

although, she has a lot off road rash and bruises, she did not break anything.

The rear end of the trike is a mass but it can be repaired.

Note: Her trike continued down the road for almost 1/4 of a mile before stopping.

So glad to hear the helmet did it's job! I bet she will be really sore for a while bit I'd take that any day over the alternative...

Back in 1978 I had a pretty ugly spill. Split my helmet right up the back but that one bounce was enough to keep what little brains I have where they belonged.

Hope she will be back riding soon!

I see so many bikers here in Florida not wearing helmets and it makes me ask myself , WHY. I know a few of them want to be the cool guys and a few of them do so because you do not have to wear one but i kind of like them and won't ride without one. I had a bad accident back in the sixties and it almost cost me my life when i was side swiped by a car and crashed into a house and had 83 stitches in my head alone. I am glad your wife faired better and wish her a speedy recovery. keep her positive and tell her the chances of it happening again are so small so she won't become scared of getting on the bike again. like the old saying goes, if you fall off your horse get right back on it and you will be fine. good luck

Glad your wife is doing well. Can always get new equipment. While riding to the Parkways in Virginia, the wife got hit in the helmet by a big rock or something. It sounded like a shot. Took a big hunk out of her helmet on the on the upper right. Definitely would have seriously hurt her or killed her. Always wear a helmet.

Yup! I advocate the use of a helmet and wear a full face myself. Prayers for a speedy recovery for your wife.

Wishing her a speedy recovery. My wife went down on her bike last summer at about 45 mph after she hit an oil patch in a curve. She had a full face helmet on, and one side plus the shield were ground flat. She broke 4 ribs, but walked away with now permanent damage thanks to the helmet. This summer the bike will be sporting a Champion trike kit.

As others have said, so glad that your wife was wearing a helmet and suffered mainly road rash and no broken bones.

I echo captdanwh comment about riders in Florida. I have a neighbor who never wears a helmet and I've pestered him for the last 10 years about it. Guess it would serve him right to go down without one, but it really bugs me when his beautiful wife is riding passenger with no helmet. I really don't understand that mentality.

I had a couple of bad spills in the 70s on my 2 wheelers and had road rash both times, plus some deep scratches in the helmets, so I never ride without one. Even on a trike, you never know when a cager will pull some stunt that will make you vault off your ride.

When your wife feels up to it I hope this incident doesn't scare her into not getting back on the bike and enjoying the ride.
