    Default Motorcycle Oil List w/ Links (READ)

    I was concerned when reading my usual bottle of oils for an oil change and noticed I had NOW bought the wrong oil!! Same label different rating, so I made a list and here is what I found out with a link to each brands web-site, think some maybe changing oil if they didn't read that bottle, lots have gone energy saving and some that we have used for years have dropped the JASO,MA rating for Wet Clutch use:
    Brand Approx. Qt.

    OTHERS Silkolene, Lucas, Motul, Honda, Maxima

    All above areMotorcycle Oils made for Wet Clutch Use with a JASO MA Rating.

    Please Read Shell RotellaT6 New Product Page: http://www.shell.com/rotella/products/t6.html
    The Only Shell Oil that lists the JASO MA rating is:
    http://www.shell.com/rotella/products/tpl-pro.html

    SO DON’T LOOK FORTHE BLUE JUG AT WALMART…………. NOT THE SAME STUFF!!

    I now use thefirst two as they are available by the quart at Auto Zone Auto Parts Stores…
    Can’t find ShellAdvance any where so I guess they are deserting the motorcycle community!!
    Read those standardsbefore just getting a colored jug, glad I started making a list!!

    Read Those Containers: JASO,MA required for a Wet Clutch!!

    I've been using the T-6 Rotella Synt Blue Jug.
    In my wing since new.

    According to this, I shouldn't use it??
    I was told years ago not to use the white jug

    </div>Thanx for this Solidbob! What's the current thinking if you're running a non-JASO,MA oil - should you be flushing the crankcase before switching to a JASO,MA oil?<br />

    Do the GL1800's specify the JASO rating in their service manuals? I know I looked at my service manuals for the Valk & VT1100, both only spec 10w40, API service class SF/SG. I know not to use friction modifiers, I've not seen a diesel oil with them in it.

    Just curious why the concern.

    </div>
    </div>Don't know, I let mine drain with the filter and plug out overnight and it was no longer dripping in the pan. I would assume if the wrong oil was used the metal parts would be deluted while the clutch basket would have to be re-built to completely get it cleaned out, well that won't be happening on mine. I refilled with <span class="highlight">Mobil</span> 1 4T Racing M/C Oil rated JASO,MA on the bottle 10W40 with a New Purolator ML16817 Filter and 4oz. of ZDDP. Let it idle til it was at mid-temp working the clutch a few times then went on a 100 mile ride. Noticed no problems during ride and noticed no slippage thru the tach. So I assume good to go again.... Good as I an do.... Just need to read better next time!!<br />
    <br />
    And Thank You Dawg for pointing out what your manual states, that's why I use 10W40.....

    that's why this Post has links added about products available....

    I got a jug of the Rotella Blue and it says on the back JASO MA. Bought it a few weeks ago at Walmart. Old stock?

    </div>I checked my T6 container from my last oil change and found it still listed it as JASO MA compliant, just as I was about to drain my trike. <br />

    I'm on my way to Houston early next week so will have a chance to put another 2500 miles on it. Will drain it then and replace with HP4S I have coming from WingStuff. If it works as well as the reports indicate, I'll not be switching again.<br />

    Thank you to my fellow TrikeTalk friends, you are the reason I love this forum. My next oil change will be with the <span class="highlight">Mobil</span> 1 T4 only. I too have been using the Shell's T6 since my first oil change. I feel the information you all have provided make perfect sense and Shell is positioning themselves to not get into a litigation situation from the first person who has transmission problems and sues them. I also agree with your thoughts that unless the brand is willing to stand up and publish their product is the right stuff for our bikes, they are not worthy of our business. Thanks again Guys.....<img src="images/smilies/smileygarden_de_banana7.gif" border="0" alt="" title="pepper" class="inlineimg" />

    Solidbob,
    Thanks for all your work on this issue. It's made my decision easier as to what oil to use to reduce "gear noise" in the Valkyrie. Today, I posted my decision about what should be good for the Valk. (Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40)...
    Again, thanks.

    Yesterday at Tractor Supply I found some jugs of Rotella T6 without the JASO MA rating. At Walmart I found Rotella T6 jugs with the JSAO MA rating. Both sets of gallon jugs appeared the same except for the rating. It is almost as if Shell suddenly found out that Rotella T6 actually did not meet JASO specs and simply changed the label. If they claim they have not changed the formulation then perhaps it was improperly labeled for quite some time. To our detriment.

    I've lost my faith in shell products and I'm switching to either Mobil 1 or Valvoline. I'll be glad to use Amsoil as solon as they begin selling it in the local shops - I'm not going to drive 40 miles to get it or pay for delivery.

    One thing to remember with Shell Rotella T is that its a diesel oil and is sold as such. That is Shells market for all of their Rotella oils. It meets our standards for oil for our trikes but is sold for diesel trucks. Some years ago when I rode a different bike and to this day those guys on that forum still use Rotella,someone queried Shell about the oil and their motorcycle and Shell told them its not recommended for motorcycles. The fact that shell answered the question about motorcycle oil now is showing how times have changed. I personally wouldnt put a 5 w whatever oil in my trike. Considering the extra weight we haul and Hondas recommendation of a minimum at least of 10w30 I would go 10w30 or 10w40 minimum.

    Solidbob, you already started the same thread on the GL1800 forum, were you hoping to get a different answer here?
