    Default Reverse motor brushes....

    Need to find brushes for the reverse motor on my 11T/G, It would be better if I can find the brushes with the plate .. I took the motor out yesterday and the brushes were shot so I cleaned the motor and what was left of the brushes [Of brush dust], Re assemble the motor but after 3 or 4 reverses it gave up the ghost again...
    Seems like there not available any ware, Except if I buy a whole motor...???

    Make sure the commutator bars are not worn down & in need of truing & undercutting the mica. If you have gone through a full set of the brushes there is no doubt some wear on the bars also.
    You might find a shop that does rebuilds on motorcycle starters that might have some brushes.

    The brushes aren't worn down but more like there cumbering along the back edges and fouling the motor up.
    I called a few places that rebuild starters but they don't have a clue about H/D reverse motors....
    Everything looks good so I think road grime and water/ salt got in and corroded [softened] the brushes.. 24k miles on the Trike and I do ride in all weather....

    You know it might be a long shot, but Harley did a replacement on the motor because of a water problem. They had a different end cap W/drain. They were replacing the motors under a warranty type thing. Might see if they will still stand good on a design problem. It would be worth a try.

    I'd have them look at it as a starter, all it really is a glorified high torque starter.

    Rhino, I spent some time poking around on google and found 2 shops that you might check with, about your motor. What I looked for were shops that are old enough to have started back when "craftsmanship" & "customer service" were not 'dirty' 'time consuming' words.
    The first one that caught my eye, "established in 1954", Middlesex Armature Service. http://alternatorsandstartersnj.com/

    The second one, "Ever since its inception in 1977", Quality Rebuilders.
    http://www.qualityrebuilders.com/

    My suggestion would be first, do not call & try to talk about what you need on the phone, too easy to get the younger 'time is money' person on the phone. You need to take your motor, in person, and talk to the oldest 'dirty-hands' person you can talk to in the shop, someone that really 'knows' what you need.
    I know it is sometimes hard to do stuff in person, but I can't stress enough, 'do not call on the phone', not even to just check them out. You need to find that person that knows how it fix/repair stuff.

    Thanks, Quality rebuilders Quote; We don't do stuff like that.......
    But Middlesex says bring the motor down we do them, As a matter of fact they say because if the floods [sandy]
    They rebuilt quite a few starters.. As soon as the weather breaks I'll pull the motor again and take it down to them. I can do with out the reverse, Just have to be careful where I park..
    Thanks again.

    ..." Quality rebuilders Quote; We don't do stuff like that......."

    I'm just guessing, the quote above was on the phone and correct or not, that is why when I'm trying to fix or get parts for something that might be considered odd, I never ask on the phone. The !@#$%'s on the phones never think about or may not care that they just lost a customer and/or just created someone that may never recommend that company. In all the years that I had my shops I rarely said no, I liked to tell them to bring it in so I can look at it and would often say " we can fix anything that others couldn't or wouldn't, just bring us what's left"!

    I hope Middlesex helps you, I bet they have a person or 2 that have learned a lot about 'fixing' motors since 1954.
    If they can create a super duty motor for you, maybe you can start you own side business for super duty TG reverse motors.

    Yea, I prefer to talk face to face, But I also don't like to ride two hours only to hear Naa' we don't do that stuff.
    Middlesex said over the phone Yep we do that stuff, Time will tell if they can, Once I get a chance to pull the motor again and bring it down to them... I can get rebuilt kits for every H/D starter , But not for the reverse one???

    They aren't familiar with a Harley "reverse" motor. If they work on motorcycle starters when they see it they will recognize it.

    I'm not sure about that'
    The motor/starter is an odd ball, When I first had trouble with it I was thinking it was a bad solenoid so I pulled it out first, took it apart' never seen one like that, you can get solenoid repair kits for all but that one?
    there's got to be other uses for that starter, And if so that's where I can find parts.
    Starter rebuild kits normally go from 15$ to 45$ while that whole motor runs about 12 hundred$, And I don't think a new one will last any longer than the original.
    Believe me if this guy can fix it I'll post about it... It might take awhile before I can get it down to him...

    First I would like to thank 92fxsts for doing the leg work and giving me a lead on a rebuilder for my reverse motor....
    Middlesex Armature Service;
    1155 St. Georges Ave Colonia NJ 07067
    732-634-3779.

    Their shop is a throw back to the 50's Which is a good thing, Reminds me of my younger days in Brooklyn where you can get anything fixed and not just replaced...
    Any way I went there yesterday and in ten minutes they had the motor apart, Replaced the brushes and brush plate, and a new commentator, Then put it all back together handed me back the motor and all the old parts, The whole repair took less than a half hour for a grand total of;
    95 dollars. Bye the way they said that motor is made by [spelling??] Hitachi..
    I put the motor back in yesterday afternoon and it works...

    KUDOS for them !!!
    A person needs to do as much advertising for them as you can ! These places are getting hard to find. That is what I was talking about that they would recognize the motor when they saw it. Same parts are likely used on other motors also.
    Nice to see someone beat the system once in a while !!
    ENJOY !!

    95 dollars. Bye the way they said that motor is made by [spelling??] Hitachi..
    I put the motor back in yesterday afternoon and it works...
    Glad you was able to get a fix, as I said in an earlier post, its just a glorified high torque starter motor. A good many of them are foreign made with Hitachi being one of them. If I remember correctly my brothers dragster ran a Hitachi built high torque starter. Harley is sticking it too the owners with their high dollar price tag when they have maybe $200 in it.

    Their shop is a throw back to the 50's Which is a good thing, Reminds me of my younger days in Brooklyn where you can get anything fixed and not just replaced...
    Any way I went there yesterday and in ten minutes they had the motor apart, Replaced the brushes and brush plate, and a new commentator, Then put it all back together handed me back the motor and all the old parts, The whole repair took less than a half hour for a grand total of;

    i wonder if they would let me mail mine to them? I'm kinda long distance away from NJ, but I could send it to them when the time comes. $95 beats the hell out of $1200 any day.

    Someone that needs it done might want to call them and see. UPS up and back still is alot better then replacing the motor. If they do let the rest of us know for the future need.
