    Default TEXAS trike/bike insurance

Insurance rates vary by region and state as well as many other factors. Any Texans out there that have reasonable insurance on their trike? I have been with Progressive for 12 years and find the rates are rather high. Or am I just old and cheap (never mind answering that part). Texans! Which insurance company do you have? I currently am only insuring a 97 GL1500A Roadsmith with full cover 100/300... $627 a year and I have never filed a claim! The bike part is covered and the trike part for $13K as an accessory I guess.
I have already called Geico and they was $867 a year!

    ARGH.

    Any Texans make recommendations?

Might want to check with GIECO. Their rates seem reasonable, but we're about to bundle all of our insurances together with one carrier this month, so we won't be staying with them. Must say, too, we're insuring a 2006 GL1800 with a 2009 Motor Trike conversion along with a Can-AM and a Harley Sportster.

Too bad Rider Insurance is not in Texas. I pay less than half on an '09, as a new customer.

Hey George, find an agent that writes policies for Dairyland. I think maybe Progressive is getting too big for us poor folks....

Like you, I was with Progressive for years but they wanted over $100 increase a couple years ago. I switched to Dairyland and now pay way less then you for the same coverage you have. OH, that covers my '06 with 16,000 in accessories and my '06 Yamaha Stratoliner S.

    Good luck with your search...

'03 Heritage through State Farm, liability/uninsured motorists is bout $250/yr. Same as a 2 wheeler. Not sure what full coverage would be, I don't ever get that unless I'm paying notes & it's required.

Not a Texan but we did live in Lewisville from 76-78 and a Big Chuck Norris Fan

IF you are a Member of AARP, call their In house Insurance Department and ask for a AARP Member Quote through Foremost. They do vary by State obviously (State Insurance Commission Reg differences) but have heard of some Crazy Low Premiums from many Trike Owners. They are NOT a discount Insurance Company with discount Service and Claim Payouts when comes time for them to give you some money. Great Insurance Company.
Be sure and get it through AARP as going directly to a Foremost or Independent Agent is always higher as the Agent has to eat and adds his cut. AARP gets paid from Foremost for access to their Member Base. Give them a call-Don't cost nothing to talk.
USAA is AWESOME for Auto, Home, etc.. and Financial Services but unfortunately shunts Motorcycles over to Progressive.
I have heard Texas is a higher cost Insurance State due to,,, Well, You know why that is and Who/What causes that.
Happy Hunting George. Still looking for a K12 ?

We've been with Rider for a few years now. Policy is for full replacement cost of the trike & trailer for $305 per year. The total premium cost has gone a little each year, can't explain why, other than we have not had any claims.

You may be a Chuck Norris fan but keep in mind he was born in Oklahoma which makes him some sort of wanna-be alien. I am NOT repeat NOT a member of AARP as I think they basically suck and are a liberal politics machine. I was a member but grew increasingly irritated with them... started when they began allowing advertisements for sex toys. Geesh! What a way to market to geezers hehe

Their auto carrier is Hartford and when we quit the AARP, Hartford told us they would continue to honor the same rates and our cages are insured through them. They pass their bike/trike insurance to some other company... I talked to them once but the agent I talked to was a bit dim and I gave up. I will try them again. I already mentioned I have checked with Geico and their rates were astronomical...

    almost $900 a year.

Rider Insurance only writes for 9 states; Texas ain't one of them. I guess I will also check Dairyland.

The wife and I are insured with Progressive for $650, full coverage, for both Spyders her 2010 and my 2013, but we go thru USAA first. My understanding is that anyone can join USAA now, not just prior military. Highly recommend them.

I am in the Houston area. State Farm has my 96 wing with 2011 motor trike. $250 per 6 months. Includes $16,000 or the trike, based on age. Will deduct each year's value. Based on my purchase of ^16,000 when I bought it.

One of the reasons my insurance has been so high is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury. One agent tells me this isn't needed if you have good medical insurance and another tells me it is needed if you are disabled and unable to work and you can't get anything out of the party that injured you. Do you carry this clause? It costs me $270 a year just for this "protection" for the trike and a 76 KZ900 which isn't ridden much.

I don't know how your insurance co. arrives at 270$ just for UN/UNDER Insured coverage? I think a talk with your agent in in Order.. I'm insured with Foremost; 2011 T/G, and a 2013 1200 Sportster, 100,000/300,000. Collision and fire/theft, And 100,000/300,000 UN/UNDER. For a total of 553$ Of the 553$ About 75$ is for UN/UNDER.

Just to add Half the Ya-Hoo's out there are driving Under/Insured, and worst yet with out any insurance..
So that type of insurance is worth every dollar..

THAT's what I was referring to as why Insurance costs so much in Texas....
There is a big Population of "certain Drivers" in Texas who either have No Insurance or just the Bare Minimum from Companies like The General & Safe Auto etc... Those Bare Minimum Co.s take a huge amount of Cash, then give an Insurance Card so "they" can pass State Requirements to get Plates and Registration then go play Demo Derby on the Roads. Usually afterward they quickly let the Policies lapse and are Liability Timebombs. If they do keep Coverage, what they have from those Companies isn't worth Crap and Pays their Victims even worse. Huge problem in States and Metro Areas with the same issues with the same "certain Driver" Population. Comprehensive Coverage is also higher for All in those Places as well.

It's not just the Medical portion to think about,,,, Without this Coverage, if you get victimized by those Insurance-Poor/Insuranceless Drivers your Company won't cover your Vehicle. Get whacked by one of the above with Crap Coverage or No Coverage and you are left paying for the repairs, replacement, and if still being paid for (your Vehicle is financed) the remaining Payments as well. Those who put you in this situation by far usually don't have anything or any Assets to sue them for, no Legitimate/Documented Source of Income to Garnish, and will just disappear even if you try.

Given your Situation and Location: Yep, You Want & Need it.

OJ, Do you have Uninsured/Underinsured medical coverage? I just did an online quote with Markel and it costs me $194 in addition to other policy costs. Right in line with other insurers putting me about $560 total. I am going to have to think about UI/UNI coverage because we do have a few folks riding around Texas who cancel their policies the day after they get their registration because their driving record causes them to have very high insurance rates. I would be interested to see stats on this by state but I bet Texas is right up towards top of the list. Everyone has different financial circumstances and I would be hard pressed to survive financially if whacked by an uninsured and I were out of work permanently... got this from Jackie, my agent for Progressive:

Your annual premium would reduce $267/year, if you removed the Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury. This coverage is one that is the greatest risk, when in an accident on a motorcycle. For example, if someone hits you and injures you leaving permanent disability, the at-fault parties insurance would likely pay the max and then your underinsured motorist would kick in. A few years back, we had an insured that was in an accident where a vehicle hit him, he flew off his motorcycle, was in ICU for an extended period of time and became permanently paralyzed from the neck down. He now has a caretaker 24/7 and had to have disabled modifications made to his home and had to purchase a van that had wheel chair modification made so he could be transported to appointments and to get around. In this case, the party that hit him, fled the scene. Medical insurance will only get you so far. That is just an example of why this coverage is so important and why the premium is the highest on your policy.

Not from Texas, but second the vote for Dairyland! My agent writes for several co.'s.

    Progressive; $1100
    Geico; $1000
    Foremost; $600
    Dairyland; $313.75

Exact same limits quoted by all for a 2014 Spyder RTS SE6. You can guess who we went with. Agents make a big difference! And AARP? When you buy from a co. endorsed by them, Hartford(car), Foremost(bike). They have to kick back to AARP!!! AARP Foremost was $100 more. Your results may differ. Tom

George, I do not! I know I am "rolling the dice", but I am hoping that my personal medical coverage will cover me if something catastrophic happens. For that extra $200 a month, I personally, would add to my personal medical coverage than give it to the bike insurance agent to cover me only when I am on the bike. But that is my opinion. Plus, I don't have the monthly income to cover that much increased monthly cost for my trike. Give up the trike, or give up the extra coverage and roll the dice....that was my decision, and I made it.

The extra "$200" is for a year's coverage... not a month. Currently paying $267 A YEAR for both the GL1500 trike and a KZ900. The KZ900 is about $100 and the GL1500 the rest...

My Progressive agent makes a pretty compelling case for the UI/UIS coverage... fwiw, I have good medical insurance... I am a retired fed. govt employee and still part of the federal govt insured group so we get good rates/terms, etc.
