Default Rear Brake Pads on Goldwing Trike

I realize the answer to this is going to depend on the kit you install and the type of riding you do, but what would you say is the "normal" life of brake pads on a trike kit in terms of miles on a Wing?

I'd guess a LOT. On my Roadsmith conversion (uses VW brakes) at 7k miles there was NO wear. Pads looked Brand New

if you use a kit that uses a car rear end you will get longer wear on your brake as they are thicker car pads. also there is more pad on the brake as well as more pads in general.

My DFT uses the factory GoldWing final drive and the factory rear brake. They usually last the same as they would without being triked. The factory pads are a metallic compound and depending on use between 1200 and 2500 miles. I think the factory brakes are easy to replace though 1 bolt and they fall out. they go back in just as easy.

The DFT Harley also uses factory Harley drive belt and factory rear brakes.

DFT kits can be shipped to you to install yourself. they are easy bolt on kits with 0 that's zero modification to you donor motorcycle. Your donor can be put back to 2 wheels any time. all after market parts will still fit. all factory parts apply as well.

My Champion SA has VW brakes and pads took about 6k miles just to make them feel like good brakes also had to bleed two times. Sumter Honda said new trikes need break in and maybe up to three bleeds. Not sure about all that but that's what I was told ?

On my Roadsmith, I've gone to the special yellow compound (which is supposed to have more bite because they are softer.) It will be interesting just how long they last. These pads are just slightly better than the stock pads.

I have a 2005 Champion Goldwing conversion. Champion uses VW brakes and pads by Pagid. I was getting very poor braking with that stock setup. I then went to EBC "Yellowstuff" pads based on recommendation of another triker on this forum. With those pads, a good bleeding and some adjustment on the rear brake lever...the brakes now function the way they are supposed to.

As stated the DFT rear brake is removed without removing the wheels. Took me 25 min. I replaced them at 45,000 miles. Should have done it at 40,000 they were real close to the disk. If the disk on a DFT gets ruined it is a big job. I will replace these after 35,000.

On the earlier model MT solid axle trikes they use drum breaks. Is there a softer drum break lining that anyone knows about to help the stopping on the older trikes?

I have an '03 Lehman Monarch II. I got 37,000 and they were almost into the rotor. It would probably have lasted longer if I hadn't done Run To the Wall twice. On the brakes off the brakes, over and over for 2500 miles.

Do you have a part number for those pads?
I have an 07 Champion SA wanted to get rid of those dirty OE pads. Champion said they were made by PAGID, but that was all they would tell me. Only had company internal part numbers. Mechanic tried to match pads but was unable.

I posted this a few months ago:

Yes the caliper is the same / Roadsmith HT1800 kits use 8 - Bolt Ford 2:93 - 1 ratio Cut Down Rear End / VW - Porsche CV Half Shafts & Joints / also uses the 11" Rotors 5-Bolt w - Dual Piston VW - Porsche Calipers / any of these pads should work (Bendix #DB15, Federated #D30A or the now used EBC #DP-4105R YellowStuff pads - the EBC Pads that are shipped by Roadsmith look like standard pads with a RED Breakin coating on them and say Roadmith on the back were the shim is attached. If you get EBC #DP-4105R pads from the parts store they should be Yellow in color on the edges with the red Breakin coating on them and shim attached below the 2 holes.

These pads listed above will work but only the EBC pads listed really make a big difference, much cheaper buying them thru Roadsmith / Talk to Taylor / no he can answer no questions about Champion, he is with Roadsmith... but they do work and are the same ... make sure you skuff your rotors so the new pads will bed in quicker and also make sure a very good Vacuum brake bleed is done to clean out lines ... there are also prior articles that I have Posted on this along with full instructions... Just search for Roadsmith Brakes till you find it.... Good Luck and hope this helps....
