I have a 2012 triglide and put Vance & Hines slip ons on with 300 miles. Ran and sounded better. Then as time went on I took off my pipes and carefully cut open my cat about 3x6 for access to remove and hollow out the cat of all material. What a job! you have to keep chipping away and finish up with a sand paper roll where its bonded to the inside walls. Then I tig welded the piece I cut out back in and painted it. Dealer never even caught it. Bike seems to run cooler. Then I put HD screaming eagle air cleaner the bike ran well and never did a ECM flash. Must have put 5000/6000 miles on like that with no problems. I'm sure a Stage 1 flash would have made it better.

Since then I put TTS100 cams with Fulsac cross-flow head pipes (these are like headers) and flashed the computer with TTS software. Runs like a different motor with major torq gains up to 4000/5000 RPM.

    Hope this helps...Jake

    Default Torque Gain

Has anyone documented an actual torque gain by changing mufflers from stock? Seems to me most TC103 owners end up spending $1500 to $3000 to get about the same performance as a stock M8.

Not really the same. Most figures given by those who modify their trike are from dyno runs, which are measured at the wheels. Figures given for a stock M8 are taken at the crank. There is a sizeable difference the rest of the power train uses before the power gets to the wheels

Wow! Just read thru the last 3-4 pages of this thread.

Yes, we've documented, on a dyno, changes in performance between many different headers, headers with and without cats, and many different slip-ons.

There is very little difference in performance, regardless of the header, cat or no cat, and which slip-on muffler used.

    The three exceptions are:

    1. Some low end torque drop when using True Dual headers...those are headers where there is no crossover between the front and rear cylinder head pipes. Not to be confused with Power Duals.

    2. SuperTrapp, or Series E disc type Slip-on mufflers. These can add 5% or more in power, which is significant.

    3. Most any slip-on muffler that a Thunder Torque Insert™ has been used with it. These can add 5% or more in power, which again, is significant.

Other areas where the Differences in exhaust can be Significant-

    1. Removal of the cat will reduce felt heat to rider and passenger

    2. There are huge variances in what sounds good to each persons ear. What is too loud to one person is not loud enough for another.

For those that do not like loud, a performance exhaust is pretty much limited the the disc type muffler. They are relatively quiet, but even they are too loud for some.

The best performance muffler is an open one (no baffles), with Thunder Torque Inserts™. These are loud, and they also deliver the best increase in power. 6-10% is typical.

A compromise is an aftermarket muffler, like the Hi Roller or a V&H with the baffles still in, combined with a TTI. These will deliver a 3-5% increase, which is significant, definitely enough that most will feel it. They are louder than stock, but many do not find them too loud.

There are many myths regarding Harley Exhaust. Some are addressed in this REPORT LINK, also addressed is help on picking an exhaust you will be happy with with. ie. buying your last exhaust the first time, instead of spending money on multiple systems.

For a Trike, if one is looking for performance improvements, exhaust changes will help, but in a relatively small way, and when compared to cost, they are one of the least in terms of bang for the buck, unless one likes a Loud exhaust note.

Much better performance gains can be had in other areas. There is a Report HERE on Long Ignored/Little Known Performance Mods.

A Performance gain of 20% is not unusual when using the strategies listed in the above Report.

Default After Market Exhaust on New Tri-Glide

If you want a decent sound from your machine with doing anything else, try putting on the Harley Screaming Eagle slip-on mufflers. Tiny bit louder than the stock and they have a deeper rumble. I've had mine on my machine for the last four years and they just keep getting better and better.

I have been considering Rineharts but now I am concerned they just may be way too loud. It's one thing to listen to them at an idle and another altogether at 70mph. Any comments/experiences are appreciated.
    I have a '09 Triglide, in 2012..

when I bought it, bought V&H slip ons, but swapped them out for Rineharts within a month..

the V&H had a deep mellow sound, but just not to my liking.. [they are still up in my attic]

switched to Rineharts and have not regretted them the first time.. good sound...

my better half now rides the trike and I tag along behind on my '05 Fatboy..

the Rineharts don't have the "I-am-getting-a-freakin'-headache-riding-behind-that-trike-with-the-Rineharts"

sound.. a good head turning sound..

and if you are in the market for an almost brand new set of V&H slip ons, will make you a GREAT DEAL!

Anyone running Hi-Roller exhaust on their M-8 Tri Glide? I was thinking about just taking out baffles on OE's and adding TT's but thought it would be too loud. I like the Rineharts sound, but had bad chrome discoloration on a set that I had on a FLHTP shortly after putting them on.

    Default Knocking sound

I replaced my exhaust with Vance & Hines Power duals and Jackpot mufflers. Got it all on and I fired it up and now I have a knocking sound at idle. Does anyone know what it could be?

Could be a heat shield banging, cross over pipe loose ... since mechanic 101 is to check the last thing you did ... zero in on the exhaust. You didn't drop anything in the head did you ....

    #1 on this

Look to be sure you have clearance remember the exhaust moves as the engine and tranny move thru rubber mounts

When i put a full exhaust on my 2011 Tri i had to lower the cross over pipe a 1/2 inch cause at idle the pipe was ''just'' hitting the frame...

You will not be disappointed it adds just the right amount IMHO
How do remove the cat? Does it need an ecm tune?
