What's an efficient (cheap but reliable) DC phone charger that I can hard wire in my trunk? (I think it is a micro USB for my Galaxy S4.) Guess I need 5 vdc.

Check with the "Battery Tender" website, as they have just released a new item about as big as your thumb that plugs into your battery tender outlet from your battery that has a USB plug-in at the end. You can then get a short extension from the standard USB to the micro plug in for your phone. With this device, you would not have to hard wire anything in your trunk!! Mine works great and I carry it in my tour pack.

They also have a similar device that you can plug-in to your battery tender lead and it has an LED screen (about 1/4" by 1") that tells you the voltage of your battery. It also has three lights - i.e. green/yellow/red that alerts you of the condition of your battery. Both items are rather in expensive as well.

Let your imagination be you guide. If you are just wanting to take the charger apart and solder some pigtails on that can be attached to 12 volts then anything you lay your hands on will work. The other end of the spectrum would be a dock of some sort but that would not fit the "CHEAP" requirement.

Just a thought. Do you carry one of those small tire pumps? If so, I'd wire in a 12 volt power outlet (direct to the battery and using at least 12 gage wire) that you simply plug the phone charger into. That way you'd have a good place to plug the tire pump into also. The bike's accessory power outlet will not supply enough current to run most pumps.

I added a standard 12v outlet in trunk. Then I use $5 adaptor w/USB. Available in lots of stores (Walgreens, CVS, etc).

A little different idea I had to do to our trike because we do not have GPS on our display was to put a 12 volt plug behind the back rest for our GPS which Janice can look at as we ride. It works very well as we do not have to worry about the GPS's battery going dead. It can be used to power anything else, like a charger for her iPhone.
