trike rides for the disabled kids

i was thinking about offering to take the special school kids for rides at their local fair. i guess i could work out some sort of seat belt arrangement, i figured some of the kids would love the opportunity. anyone had experience with disabled pillions, and liability issues associated?

Sounds like a fun time for the kids. A seat belt would probably work for some depending on the disability. I don't know how things are in Australia but here in the US everyone seems to be lawsuit happy. I be afraid if one of the kids was injured, say a bug flew in their eye, a lawsuit would follow. People in this country will sue over nearly anything. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I won't comment on the lawsuit aspect as it has been covered well. I will share this with you. Last Saturday our CMA chapter went to the monthly breakfast at the local airport.
While we were there I saw a young man with Downs Syndrome. He came to our table and spoke and hung out with us for a little bit. As we were getting ready to leave I saw him in the parking lot with his grandfather. He was looking at my trike and I could tell he was wanting to get on it. I motioned for him to come over and told him that I needed a photo of the trike and would he get on it and let me get a picture. He got on, had to help him figure out what foot to put where, and the smile on his face I'll never forget. I say "GO FOR IT"!!!!!!!

Again thanks and keep up the good work , I feel blessed to be a part of the life of a child with a condition . So yes it will put a smile on a childs face when shown a little love and attention . It don't get much better than that .

I agree that what you are proposing would be a fun activity for the kids and I applaud you for it. My daughter has Down syndrome and my wife has cerebral palsy so I know that the term "disabled" covers a lot of territory. My daughter attends public school but is not mainstreamed, the special kids have there own classroom and teachers and they are very closely monitored. I think the best way to proceed would be to contact the school and present your proposal to them. If they approve, the next step would be to get permission from the parents. Yes, this sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through but this is what is normally required for the kids to participate in any sort of "out of the ordinary" activity. If they say "yes" great, if they say "no", at least you tried.

Great picture! Thanks for doing what you did, I'm sure it made his day. Now he is going to bug his grandpa to get a trike.

Outstanding posts! Helping a disabled child or adult to enjoy an event is wonderful. Please lookup "Ride For Kids" held for The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. They always need trikes to take some of the STARS on the ride.
