    Default Can Am power

I am switching over to a trike after many years of riding 2 wheelers . Looking at Goldwing Trikes. I am in the process of test riding different brands and I am pushing towards a Road Smith but need to test ride before making that decision. Every one asks me if I have test ridden a Can Am yet? Well I am going to look at one tomorrow, the new 2014 RT-S SM6. They supposed to have made major changes with the motor and trans upgrades for more power. Is there any one out there that has any input on the power for 2 up riders?

I've been looking at the CanAm Spyders on line, not sure I'll every move away from the Wing/Road Smith, but I continue to look. In my opinion the Hannigan is good pick. Go here to read up on the Spyder. Good videos, prices, and general information.

Personal opinion - choose the Goldwing and take a look at the California Sidecar conversions before making a decision.

We have a 2014 RT automatic .We just did a 1,300 mile trip to Tn. pulling a cargo trailer with all of our camping gear .trailer and gear was probably 450 lbs. Riding two up . The RT had no problem on the interstate with the cruise set at 73 mph. We could pass with no issues. I tried to stay under 75 due to the tires on the trailer, not speed rated. Without the trailer we took one whole day and rode the Cherahola Skyway and the Tail of the Dragon. No problem going up to 5,500 ft above sea level. The RT's new 3 cylinder motor has more torque than my 2012 Victory Cross Roads did.The RT has no problems riding two up as far as we can see. There is no vibration except for a little belt vibration at between 82 and 85 mph that can be cured with an aftermarket tensioner kit . Riding the Dragon in the rain,we were glad to have two tires up front instead of just one.Much more confidence having two 4 inch treads on the ground rather than one 2inch tread when you are turning and stopping.

That's an impressive testimonial on the 2014, 3 cylinder Spyder.

I too am running a 2014 RT-Limited with the SE6 semi-automatic transmission. I was running BMW 1200's and I see very little difference between the power of one over the other and the SE6 makes it a joy in traffic and at slow speeds. It's also plenty snappy at passing speeds and the torque is amazing. A lot of times I find myself not shifting when I should simply because it pulls so well from low RPM

The handling is totally different of course, but powerwise it seems about the same to me.

We are on a SE6 and the power and torque are amazing. And the ride is awesome. We had a CSC Wing trike and made the switch to the Spyder and are happy we did. Tom

Can you compare the 2? I ride a 2011 RT spyder....no complaints or issues, just considering a different ride since the spyder is the only bike I have ever ridden. Considering a GW roadsmith trike or a k1600 hannigan trike. Haven't ruled out the 1330 spyder either....decisions decisions...

Yeah, like i need another choice.. i actually am partial to the roadsmith trike look, and like the modern features and look of the k1600..... reconcile that...

All are very good choices provided you find a good installer for choices other than the CanAm......Good installers out there, a sloppy one can give you grief. Wish you the very best.

The wing trikes are more spacious for the rider and passenger. My 2014RTS SE6 has more HP and less torque than the wing. But, that is with the wing in stock form. The RTS SE6 weighs (1050lbs.) less than a wing (1300 lbs.) trike. The RTS soaks up the bumps. You will notice a much smoother ride with the RTS. Especially RR crossings!

The MPG are better with the RTS. I got 33-34 with the CSC trike. The RTS I get 36-37. Money wise, the RTS is less $$$$ than a wing trike. Storage, more for the RTS. No valve adjustments needed on the RTS. Oil and filter at 9300 for the RTS. Wing is every 8000.

I really like the Roadsmith. More car parts used. The Hannigan has a new front end available that is more trike friendly.

Hope this helps you out some. Tom

Just make sure, if you buy the Spyder, that the dealer is well trained on them . Just like a poor wing coversion, a poor dealer can make both a very unhappy story.

Look for a Platinum Dealer. They are the highest rated dealers in the BRP(Spyder) network. Tom

Sold our 2009 HD UltraClassic tri glide last fall.
rode my 2001 Valkyrie Interstate tike for 7 years, liked it a lot! But we move on so we just purchased a 2014 Spyder RTL-SE6 in Silver Platinum today. Came with 4 year roadside and warranty included and $6000.00 off list!
Too good to pass up for pensioners!
:Dorag:Ride what you want and ride it till you rot!
