Put a new drive shaft in.

After the front u-joint went out last week I got the trike back with a new u-joints and an new drive shaft (u-joint bent the ear so we decided to put a whole new system in). Didn't realize how much slack there was in the old unit. Trike feels so tight now as I shift and accelerate and decelerate. Should have changed this a long time ago. Just glad there was no other damage as I have seen on other u-joint failures.

Glad to hear all is well again Dave. YUP, it could have been a LOT WORSE!!! Did you get that new generation driveshaft from Motor Trike? Hope you get a ton of miles on this one. :xszpv::xszpv:

Yes, it is the new generation drive shaft. Made so much difference, don't know if it is because it is the new type or just that it is all new but there is no slack like I have always had. Can't wait to put some miles on it this Saturday as our CMA group makes a ride to Lorman, Mississippi for some chicken.

Probably a little of both Dave. Just being all new has got to tighten things up but I really think the new design has helped a lot. Fattening up that rear section has got to reduce flexing and that can only be a GOOD THING...

Enjoy your ride. :xszpv::xszpv:

The New Driveshaft/U-Joint Assembly is a vast improvement in every category...strength, ease of maintenance, and drivetrain smoothness....Kudos to Motor Trike.....ThumbUp

Darn the bad luck Dave.... I just noticed what year your 1800 was.

In late 2005 Honda changed the engine output shaft. The new Motor Trike driveshaft (accidently or intentionally) works sooooooo much better with the new Honda output shaft. It lets the MT front yoke come forward just far enough that the front U-Joint zerk fitting can be accessed by removing the right side engine cover. You could always lube the rear joint without pulling the drive shaft. Now the lucky ones can lube that front one also. I'll still drop the shaft once a year to clean and lube the splines but now I can give the U-Joints a squirt of fresh grease easily... :xszpv::xszpv:

At what mileage??
63,000 miles. I had just the week before asked my mechanic about changing but decided to wait a till I got back from Run for the Wall. Made it 3 hrs from home and she started to come apart. Just glad I stopped when it started making a noise and found it before it did major damage.
