Default Ongoing 2014 Tri-Glide build-out, lots of pics and thoughts on the differences

Just picked up a new 2014 Tri-Glide this afternoon.
    Big Blue Pear/Vivid Black

    Bone Stock

Got 70 miles in riding it home in the rain, dodging thunderstorms.
I will be posting pics of the mods I do to this bike over the next month or so.

Rolled it out and the clouds opened up for about 10 minutes of heavy rain. Soon after it subsided, the dealership took their obligatory picture, and I was on my way.

Took a bit of a long route to the shop, then on home. Got in about 70 miles. Mostly wet roads, some sun, some light rain, and one heavy downpour.

During break-in I'm keeping my wrist out of the throttle and keeping the RPM's below 3000, so it is difficult to gauge the power difference. However, there definitely seems to be more torque from 2500 - 3000 RPM, even with light throttle.

I did hit some sweepers at 55-65 mph, and the front end definitely is more sturdy.

I don't like the linked brakes...may get used to them, time will tell.
The seat is more comfortable for me.

That big screen in the fairing is still a mystery to me...guess I need to learn it.

When I got to the shop I plugged a Power Vision into the diagnostic port to see what the engine temp reading was. 214 degrees. Much lower than it would have been for a pre-14, given the same conditions.

With the vent open in the fairing there was a definite reduction in buffeting. (I wear a Nolan Modular and am 5' 10

That's it for now. Will be posting my initial list of mods later tonight or tomorrow.

I will be posting pics along the way, as I add them on.

Forgot a couple of things in the previous list

    24. Tank Lift with Deluxe Option

    25. High Performance Cleanable Oil Filter

    26. 3M protective film on fenders and sidecovers

    Initial Ride Report-

Yesterday I put another 140 miles on it. About 10 of them on the interstate, the rest on winding country roads. Some hills, lots of sweepers, and a few twistys.

Ambient temp varied between 82 and 90 degrees.

I need to get the floorboards pushed out and my highway pegs with heel rests installed, not used to having my feet so tucked in.

Even though I stayed below 3500 rpm and did not get heavy with the throttle, there is Definitely More Power out of this engine!

I don't have the Power Vision hooked up yet, so was not able to monitor the engine temp. However, the radiator fans only kicked in once, and that was when I stopped during the ride and let the engine idle for about 5 minutes in a parking lot.

Once it was heat soaked, the oil temps ranged between 260-270 (at the dipstick), which is too hot for my liking, we'll see how much those drop after doing some of the other mods. If they don't get down in the 230 area, I will be looking for a place to mount an oil cooler.

The heavier front forks definite improved the handling over previous years...not that it was bad before, it is just better now!<

The stereo sound is better too!

Spent 3 hours yesterday afternoon washing it and using the glare polish.

Paint- When it is cloudy it looks like a navy blue color, when the sun hits it, it really pops with all the flake!

With the Canbus system, all the wiring under the seat is much more tidy.

I found myself actually using the parking brake...on the '11 it was not worth the hassle (plus it did not work all that well).

This new set-up is easy and intuitive, and seems to work better.

My habit of parking in gear also has me starting in gear...takes a bit getting used to that I have to pull the clutch in AND put on the brakes to get it to crank over.

Should be getting some of the mods done today, will be taking pics and posting tonight or tomorrow.

The Deluxe option lifts the rear of the tank 1/2". This yields several benefits on the all HD Touring models-

Even better air flow over the engine
Easier to see and clean the rear rocker cover
Keeps the tank more level looking (and the gas gauge less inaccurate)

Check out this LINK for the before and after pics.

This is what I got done today-

Rolled it out in the sun to get some pics of the paint. I guess I should have asked Mary to take the pics, lol, you can see the flake, but it really looks a lot better in person than any of the pics I took.

Here is how the passenger footboard came, at the highest adjustment-

I put it on the lowest adjustment (1.5" lower)...now the two higher adjustment holes are showing...one with rust in it already. Will be picking up some plugs to go in those holes.

Next I installed Marys' Kury adjustable passenger pegs. She uses these a LOT.

Next I pulled the wheels, Mary cleaned them and taped them off. I then gave them 4 coats of clear. They are drying over night and I'll put them back on tomorrow. Hopefully we'll never have to look at, or clean any more stains off them.

Next up was getting rid of the stock linkage, which is just plain looking, plus, it is not if it will fail, but when.

Replaced it with one of our Chrome linkages that has heim joints (that won't fail).

Last thing I did today was install the Wards Parts Werks FCS fans.

Will be doing some more over the next week, and will update this thread as I go.

    Cool!

I got 60 more miles in today. Took the long way home from the shop.

I'm looking forward to being done with the break-in miles. There is definitely more power there than the '11. Just can't tell how much with being easy on the wrist and RPM's.

Need to get the tank lift and Deluxe option installed...not used to that air coming over the top of the tank, makes for a bit of buffeting...plus I want that air going under the tank across the engine.

These were the first miles I put on it with the Wards Parts Werks fans installed.

After it was warmed up I let it sit for about 10 minutes idling, the radiator fans never kicked on...last ride (without the Wards fans) the radiator fans kicked on after about 5 minutes of idling.

My HD brand dipstick oil temp gauge went defective today...3 days after it was purchased.
So I had no way to see what the oil temps were doing.

From the pic below you can see I installed my backrest, air hawk and sheepskin. Definitely better for me...but need to get the handlebars made and installed...those puppies are just too short for me.

Also, hopefully you can't see in the pic that Mary put some 3M film on the fenders, the plastic between the fenders and the side covers, and also film on the side covers.

Here's a better pic of the Wards fans and the DK Custom Shift Linkage-

Here's a pic of the wheel after being rattle canned with clear. Looks good, hope it holds up.

Still have quite a few things to do on the list, but making progress.

During that long idle period, did your EIMTS go active? My trike does almost every time when at idle.

Your trike is looking great. Have a good one.

It would have, but I disabled it.

The book says, and the tech at the dealership said, that the EITMS will not go active until the engine temp (actually the rear of the front cylinder temp) is 284*.

I have found that to be inaccurate information. On my TG, and on two different 2014 Street Glides I have worked on, I found that even if the engine temp is 180*, but the ambient temp is above 80*, the EITMS will activate.

Unless there is a patch for that (and I will be chasing that information down), if you live anywhere that it is warm, then the EITMS is going to activate everytime you come to a stop.

I found it irritating and unnecessary, so it is currently disabled.

If I can get it to function correctly, where it only activate if the engine is 284* or higher, then I will enable it.

Yes, it would go active with the fans on and with the fans off....because it was activating independent of the engine temperature.

    Thanks!

    This week has flown by!

Have not done much on the list. Today, after work I put the floorboard extensions on.

I ordered the kit from VTwinGoodies.com I knew it would only fit the right side and I would have to do some other work to make the left side work because of the parking brake.

But I thought it would be a good jumping off point.

This is the 4th kit I've purchased from VTwinGoodies, as always, it was delivered quickly.

It does not seem like moving the floorboards out 1" would make that big a difference....but it really is Much more comfortable for me.

Here is the right side stock- Foot is way up against the engine/pipes.

This is a pic of the parts from VTwinGoodies-

Here is a pic of the right side with one of the round spacers and one of the squarish spacers installed.

The hardware with the kit is Grade 8.

Much better, I can move my foot around more, and much less likely to get my boot heel scuffing up the exhaust shield.

Here is a pic of the left side in stock form. It does not feel as tight against the engine/primary, but there is still very little room to move my foot around.

I figured I was going to have to pull the bolts, see what I needed in the way of spacers and longer bolts, & then make a trip to the hardware store in the morning.

I was very happy to see there were only 3 bolts and all the same size.

I was able to use the second round spacer & a bolt from the VTwinGoodies kit. I thought I was going to have to go to the hardware store and get a couple of spacers and grade 8 bolts. Then I realized that the Sportster Passenger Comfort Peg Extensions we make would probably fit. They did!

So I was able to get it all bolted up (with lock washers and thread-locker) this evening. No need to go to the hardware store in the morning.

Here's a pic of the left side finished.

It went much easier than I thought it would.

There was plenty of wire for the parking brake to move out 1"

Tomorrow and Sunday I will be getting more items done on my list.

That trike looks great. If my wife sees that blue I may be riding a 2011 Vivid Black Tri Glide and selling the Electra Police model. She been hounding me to get rid of all my 2 wheelers and get a trike anyway. Maybe its time to listen.

Not to butt in but this is the procedure from H-D.:

EITMS can be enabled or disabled by performing the following procedure.
    1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and push the engine OFF/RUN switch on the right handlebar to the RUN position (the motorcycle may be running or not running).
    2. Push the throttle to roll-off position and hold.
    3. See Instrument Lamps. After approximately 3 seconds, the cruise indicator lamp will either flash green (EITMS enabled) or orange (EITMS disabled).
      NOTE:
A flashing lamp indicates the EITMS setting. A solid (non-flashing) lamp indicates the cruise control setting.
    4. Repeat the procedure as needed to enable or disable EITMS.
