Wow...Did the same thing happens to the 3 of yours???
I no iv read elsewhere on here that the display disappears on some of em!

My display and all functions work fine, just NO sound

My 13 had the same issues right from day 1. They messed around with it a few times, finally I talked them into giving me a new one. That was late at the end of summer. Only been out a few times this year but it is still working. I don't have a lot of faith in them.

I'm on my 4th radio on my 09. All had the same problems like yours. Took it in for service on an oil leak, got 2 miles down the road going home and the radio quit, turned around and went back and got another radio. Just like Screwball my extended warranty is up next week. Keep my fingers crossed also.

The radio on my 11 XXX puked on day 1 on the way home from the dealership. They said it was water intrusion because I rode it home in a thunder storm. They forgot to put a gasket between the windshield and fairing when the swapped out my stock windshield. They ended up replacing the radio with a refurbished one. I bitched and moaned about them replacing a new radio with a refurbished one to no avail. The refurbished radio has worked fine since May of 2011.

I've never seen a gasket between the windshield and fairing, I know they use what they call cushion tape on the outer fairing side. The tape sticks the outer fairing, I've never seen it come off since it has adhesive on it. They put it on to keep the outer fairing and windshield from rubbing together and making noise.

The HK stereo hasn't been the most robust design, I've had the one in my 06 Ultra replaced once when the display went out. Water intrusion seems to be the biggest problems with them.

M3,
We had this conversation on another forum awhile back, here's the link:

Look at posts 11-18.

Yes, there is a gasket (or tape, but it's foam) between the fairing and windshield. Mine didn't come off, it wasn't installed on an aftermarket windshield upon delivery.

Don't know how it works in the US, but here, the HK radio is NOT on the HD warranty. It is a separate company that supplies and repairs them. If your's dies, and the HD dealer has one sitting around, that's what you get. My dealer has 4 of them and they are usually all out for repair at the same time. They just recycle these 4 over and over again. I was lucky and got a brand new one because it was on record that mine was faulty right from day one.

Radio replaced twice on my '10. 70k on it.
Last time under extended warranty, they wouldn't just swap with spare they keep at the stealer. So I made them tape some cardboard into the hole while I waited for mine to come back from "refurbishment".
As far as riding in T-storms. Uh, oh. I've been in more storms than Thor.

Yep that's the stuff, it sticks on the rider side of the outer fairing. It doesn't go on the windshield, here is a bulletin with installation instructions for it along with other seals for the outer fairing https://app.box.com/s/mwk11zczzwmo1ydacbdu. Once this has been installed you shouldn't have to replace it every time a windshield is changed. My 06 Ultra has had 3 new windshields since I bought it new in September 2005, never a leak because the tape is on the outer fairing.

I bought a new windshield gasket from MOCO cause the faring was rubbing the windshield with only one layer. The material was just gasket material (paper).
By the way Dennis Kirk is selling a Jensen stereo for Harley without the CB & CD. Says it is a direct plug in. On sale now for $399.:Trike1:

Normally when the radio takes a puke then comes back to life later on it's over heating. The triad on the board gets hot and no sound is the result. The HK radio's are cold soldered as well. Sometimes these joints break.

For those under warranty... HD will replace it with a reman radio. It is what it is and you can't get them to change their minds. If they just said... there's your new radio you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in new or reman.

For those guys with a conversion.... your warranty has been voided by HD. Yes, even the radio.

If your radio is out of warranty then visit http://www.ironcrossaudio.com/

These guys are the best. The cost to fix is not bad either, $250 to go all the way through the radio and fix her up for good. They also have other services to offer for your radio such as putting the AUX plug in the back of the radio to stow that ugly cable from the front of the bike or they can change display colors and so on.

I talked to Tony @ Iron Cross today...He told me that my units main brain has been affected....Fairly common..Not from moisture...Its actually acting confused with so many DTCs that it doesn't know what to do..Sometimes it will work for a few minutes and then cutout...
I called EXT HD warranty, and they will cover it...They said if the dealer has a refurb unit in stock, that will be used, if not a new will will get ordered for it and swapped out...I guess I will find out next Thursday...In the mean time< I scored a in working order used unit that a guy took out to do a biketronics super style system on his 2011 RoadGlide...Said the unit was less than 3 months old....$200..Thus I now have a spare for when my ext warranty runs out....Smart thinkin on my part while available I thought..

Iv never had the outer fairing off yet, but on my Digital tech 11 readout it says my bike Has:
Radio # 76160-06....
Radio : Speaker Configuration: 4 Speakers with BOOM! Amp-Enhanced EQ
Does that mean it has the extra BOOM Amp piggy backed to the top of the radio, or are they all described like this?
If so, that could be the heating up problem Wiz
I see an HK amp like this on ebay right now, but they don't show it in any of the accs books

Wiz..I tried to see up there as well as stick my hand in, but no avail..So, instead of taking apart, I will wait and see what Thursday brings at the dealers...I really don't like the idea of someone else F**Kin with my scoot, but I will definetly be on patrol while its in there....Actually, Iv never had warranty on a bike before..LOL...and believe me, Im tempted to just change it out with the used on I got...but I got warranty till Dec 21/16 so I might as well use it...Capish?..HankB

Took the Tri G into stealer today and guess what???
They told me I needed a new stereo....Duhhh..No kidding...
So, home I go, no stereo...They ordered one and apparently a refurbished unit will be sent out from Deeleys..
Guess they couldn't take my word on it and had to physically see all the DTCs...
So, next week we get a new boom box...
I did purchased the front and rear Boom speakers and chrome grills...They will install the fronts while fairing is off and Iv already installed the rears...Any views on these speakers???Worth the $$ or not???
As always, any feedback is appreciated!!!

I bought the front and rear boom speakers and grills for my 07 Ultra before being triked. With a helmet on and with the wind noise I don't think there is very much difference at all. I don't usually ride with the volume turned way up. Maybe if I did I'd notice more difference.
Mostly I use the HD headphones, and those sound pretty good.
