If you can, ride one for a time, friend or rent one. My 11 was no hotter than my 05 Ultra two wheeler. My Ultra was bone stock, nothing not even a different down load. I put over 60 K on it and suffered a few times because it was a heat beast.
When I got the TG, I expected nothing different and as delivered, it was hot. I did some small things at first that helped. Then decided, this is my scooter, I will do what I want regardless of warranty. I will tow a trailer, throw a tuner on it and some pipes. Most of all I will throw miles on it.
I now have a trike that I am more happy with (happy with it when I bought it), out of warranty and we enjoy using it.
I believe TG riders get a different air flow because of fenders which may be a reason they feel a little warmer.
I feel that running my TG bone stock, engine would not last the miles I want out of it. If you trade every few years and do not mind a little heat, no problem. If you plan on keeping it say 5 or more years and put 60 90K on it, I would do some mods to it.
Hope I answered some of your points.
Sorry you got lost in the shuffle in this thread.

Because there's no where else for the heat to go but up when at idle. The key is reducing the heat by making the motor more efficient and cooling down the exhaust header. Proper tuning and head fans. Replacing the smog cams help a lot. No need to install big racing cams that upset the motor's performance balance. A small aftermarket cam will do wonders.

Thanks GaryD , Rhino2,Dennis, Mr Wizard & Geezerglide11441. For all the good info on this subject. I've been riding Harley's since 1984. Since my 80 Low Rider in the mid 80's till now. I've had about 8 of these and 2 for my wife. Grew up in Michigan & rode a lot in those HOT summer days. PLUS Daytona & Sturgis, & a few summers in Phoenix. Believe me I know about being HOT. But after reading all the posts about guys complaining about how HOT they are on their Trikes. I started to wonder DO WE want to buy one of these ?? But after reading your last posts. I see NO problem on getting one. And I HOPE soon. I want to thank all of you for explaining what's going on with the Heat on Trikes. Rick
Now on the subject of brand bashing. This shouldn't even be a problem on here. We all love our brands and we all have our place on the forums for that brand. I would think our moderator's would DELETE a bashing thread ? On other sites that I'm on. They DELETE the post and give the poster a warning ! If they do it again their kicked off for a year. When I started riding in the early 80's. I was really bad about that myself. I didn't even talk to guys with other brands or even look at them. But now. I don't care what you ride. Its the person that matter's not the Bike. I might not like his or her bike. But I'm interested in what the person is about now. I have friends that ride other brands. So what ? If that's what you want cool. I'm just expressing my views on this. Thanks for letting me do that.
RT, I would try small changes first (crotch cooler, floorboard extenders etc) to see if that's all you need, then go to the bigger things (A/C, tuner, pipes etc)
I still haven't removed the cat, which almost everyone agrees is the best thing. I don't feel I need to do that extra expense. Maybe if I carried a passenger I would need to.

Hey Moneywoes, we get hot days up here too, some even as hot as yours, maybe not as many though.
I lived in Temple for 5 years. Wife loved it (she'd wake up each morning and say "Another day in paradise".
My son was born at Scott & White so he's a "Natural Born Texan" and when you guys seceed he can bring us back with him.
Texas was OK. I just couldn't get use to water skiing on Christmas day - I have to have the 4 seasons. Besides I love snow.
The items that I have accomplished regarding the heat issue on my Trike is as follows:
- Installed a low temperature thermostat (already came with an oil cooler!)
- Installed the Ward's Fans to help cool the heads.
- Installed a tank lift kit - 1 1/2" in the front and 1/2" in the back. (increases air flow over the top of the heads)
- Installed the Fuel Moto performance duals to eliminate the cat in the head pipe.
- Use Synthetic oil.
- Installed the Dynojet Power Vision and have the tune richer than OEM. (and runs awesome!!)
All the above was installed on my 120r crate motor which probably runs a little hotter (10.5:1 ccp) than the OEM 103" motors. Motor has been in the Trike since it was 50 miles new so I have no experience cooling the OEM 103".
Next step I plan to take if the above falls short, is to install the a fan powered oil cooler.
Sorry this post is so long, but this is what I have done to address the heat generated by a air cooled motor!!

Not anything to solve the heat thing but I added the floorboard extenders. That was for comfort not heat.
As far as heat goes I've noticed that when the wind is coming from a certain direction left or right steady breeze then I get my right leg fried.
I don't think this heat is coming from the pipes which are stock but when you stick your hand down there at highway speed you can feel it coming off the motor being driven by the draft of air going past. That said if I get to another road and turn right or left the heat will let up on my leg. I think it's all about this scenario. At times I can adjust the fairing vent to get cooler air to the area but this doesn't always work.
Sometimes my wifes right foot will heat up pretty badly as well. These two things don't always happen together so I think it's just a matter of a steady draft from a certain direction causing either.
I have a Road King with the same drivetrain as well . Have never ever felt the heat draft from this bike. At all!
The Trike has the lowers on it of course and when I pulled those off the heat was better. Those lowers do a lot more air damming than you think. But then I got a ton of head buffeting without them so it seems it's one or the other.
You have to figure out which is better for you. I left the lowers on.
Just joking a little Gary. I was raised up in Michigan, little town of Alto a few miles east of Grand Rapids. Moved to TX back in 81 for employment. Wife has let me know in about 7 years when I hopefully can retire we'll be moving back. Most all our family lives there. Passed out and fell off a hay wagon from that Michigan heat when I was a teenager. It gets HOt there and humidity is as bad as anywhere I've been sometimes, but this TX heat feels like i'm sitting in a big oven. Given the two climates I'd take the Michigan 4 seasons humid summers and frozen winters and all.
To keep on thread topic, I put a 1.5" tank lift on from DK. Jagg 10 row oil cooler with fan, Wards part werks fans, V&H power dual headpipe, GMR 577 cam and power vision tuner. By far the biggest improvement is the Ward parts werks fans.

I know you were kidding. I moved to Temple in '81 also for my job. They closed the Midwest office. What I noticed about living in Texas was you hardly ever saw your neighbors - they kept the A/C on 24/7 and never left their house.
It was fun for the 5 years I was there, but needed to get back to reality.
