Default XPEL film applied to trike

I was looking at the stuff Harley sells to put on the fenders to protect them and also the 3M products but I ended up having XPEL ultimate clear film applied to the front and rear fenders along with the body panel between the rear fenders and seat and also the side covers. This stuff is really nice. The entire front fender is covered and the rear fenders are covered from the front edge all the way up the fender to the rear brake light. The installer does not have the templates for the new 14 fairing or lowers as soon as he gets these I will have these done. No more worries about stone chips on the rear fenders. Bugs wipe off with a dry rag. A couple of times I accidently scuffed my fender with my boot when getting on the trike but the scuff mark wiped off with ease. If I did not point out that there is a film coating on the trike you would never notice. It has a 10 year warranty against any failures or yellowing and if you ever remove it, it does not leave any glue residue behind and the color of the paint will match the uncovered areas.

All fine, but how does it compare in cost with the other films? Also did the installer use the sealer over the film ?

No sealer over the film. This product is guaranteed for 10 years. In a test they put this on the hood of a white RX7 then gave a bunch of people sharpie pins. Let them write all over the film. Let it sit for a while they used Isopropyl alcohol and wiped every thing off with no traces of any markers. In another test the put this film and 3M on the hood of a car. Then sprayed flat black spray paint across both films. They let it dry for a couple hours in the sun. Then they used Lacquer thinner to clean up the paint. The lacquer thinner removed the paint off of both films. However the thinner also took the shinny finish off of the 3M film while the XPEL film was not damaged in any way.
If you scuff or scratch the 3M film you need Isopropyl alcohol to wipe on the film to remove the scuff or scratches. To remove the scratches or scuffs from the XPEL film can be done by parking the bike in the sun and it will self heal or pour warm water over the damaged area and it will self heal.

The reason I asked the question about a sealer is refering to this from Xpel also:

Paint Protection Film Sealant (R1326-128) by XPEL®, 1 Gal. XPEL Film Sealant is an acrylic polymer product that is purpose-made for protecting any aliphatic urethane paint protection film. Attaching itself at a molecular level, the sealant forms a hardened barrier when exposed to UV light.

Expel doesn't say anything about it being needed or not on the site. Also if the sealant would take away the self healing feature or not. As it says it forms a hardened barrier. Protection for the protection,,, I guess !
I have the Harley film on at this time without much problem other than coverage . When it needs to be replaced I will be putting on the Xpel film.
    Thanks !

I didn't see that answer to the cost question. What is the cost difference???

I had 3M on my '12 TG and will be putting it on my '14 soon. I bought a roll of 3M film 24" x 60" enough to do many bikes. I made templates so I can make replacement pieces as needed.
I am also really interested in the new 3M spray film. The reviews sound great.

XPEL has this pricing info on their website if you wanted to buy by the foot...

I've got it on my trikes fenders, side panels, behind the passengers backrest on the tour pack, and on the trailing edge of the gas tank.

    It is for a roll 24" X 10' for $159.99.

    Thanks for the info.

Ouch. Way more then the $50 I paid for 5' I think I'll stick with 3M. It's worked great for me at a reasonable cost.

Didn't see an answer to the question. What was the cost of this application ? I've seen the price list for product on their website. I've contacted couple of their installers and both said they, XPel, didn't have the Harley templates. Everything would have to be custom made so it would be time/labor/product. Very $$$$$$

What do they charge, in your area, for rear fenders (inner and outer) plus both side covers? You have a contact number ? I can just contact direct. Thanks

I had the 3 M stuff on the front of my 2006 SS Monte Carlo. Had it on the hood about 1/3 of the way up. Only time you could tell it was there. Was when it got wet.

I don't know if this will help, but when I had Xpel installed on my 2012 Civic the installer told me that Xpel installed their product on the fairing of the Harley Ultra. It seems the cost was about $350.00. I didn't ask if the application was available for other parts of the motorcycle.

I was lucky. When I purchased the Civic in February of 2012, business was slow and I got the Xpel guy to come to my garage, do the entire front bumper, hood, door edges and part of the front fenders for 600 even. It is great protection. When I bought my latest Trike I had the protection kit put on and then my installer had some extra sheets of the 3 M and I put it on the ground effects and anywhere I thought my foot might hit.

I had a rock hit the front of the Civic on a trip to DC and it nicked the poly but never got to the paint.

If Xpel would give complete instructions for applying the film, such as how to do the stretch around compound curves like the rear fenders on the Trikes, it would be tempting to give it a try. The price from EBay is about half the cost from Xpel's price list.
I think the rear fender would just take two pieces for the top & outside. Just have to fit them together so no gaps. Same on the faring top & sides.
