My dad and I will start putting on the miles tomorrow morning heading to Hill City. Of course we'll have our lap tops so we can check in on the Best Trike Forum on the Internet.

If you are looking for a nice detour, try Medora, ND. Straight up Rt. 85. It's located at Theodore Roosevelt National Park (Badlands of ND). Way better than SD Badlands. More greenery, more Buffalo and way more Prairie Dogs.
If you get close to Mitchel SD stop at KLOCK Works. Brain and Laura are really genuine nice people. Also the Corn Palace is interesting.
Stallion #406 // 2013 Tri-Glide
This will be my 4th trip and my dads 5th to the area, never get tired of riding the roads and seeing the attractions. The last 2 times we got into some nice sized herds of Buffalo in Custer state park, I'm hoping to do it again.

Safe and enjoyable trip to you and Big Mike
Maybe,,,, one can keep the other out of any trouble
Keep your powder dry and the Trikes between the ditches
Post pics when you can. Expect to see some awesome ones for those of us "common folk" left behind
Enjoy!
Ya'll have a good trip. Shore wish I could still go riding with my DAD. Send pics. please. Wish I could tag along. RIDE SAFE
I'll be sure to post pictures, this is the maiden voyage for my 2012 Hannigan GenII. One word best describes it, AWESOME! I'm pulling my Aluma MCT trailer and don't even know its back there, put it in 5th gear and set the cruise control at 77 mph and let the miles pile on. I love the fact I never once had to downshift for a single hill, I averaged 27 mpg.
The trip so far started a little rocky when we hit Chicago, my dad and I learned a valuable lesson. Don't mess with taking I90 again, we did it in 2008 with no problems, my mom and dad took 90 in 2012 with not an issue. Today we hit the mother of all traffic jams, lost about 3 hours when it was all said and done. My dad had his Triglide get so hot it started chugging so he pulled it to the side of the road and shut it down. The bummer was we got separated and I ended up 3 miles ahead before I could safely pull to the side of the road.
I started walking back to where he was when the nice folks from the DOT stopped and picked me up, they didn't particularly like me hiking back to see my dad. One truck stopped and assisted my dad and the other picked me up, those folks are number 1 in my book, they helped us get back together and gave us a different route to take. I thought it was fun when the DOT guy hit the lights and siren to get the traffic out of his way.
We finally hit Wisconsin, with about 500 miles under our belt, not bad when you consider we lost about 3 hours. Tomorrow should be a 470 mile day to put us in Sioux Falls SD. Then a little hope skip and jump to Hill City Sunday.

Chicago is SCARY!!! Probably not so much for those that contend with that mess every day but for me it was almost life changing ....
i won't be doing that again.

You just have to remember when you drive around here in Chicago EVERYBODY is out to get you. Then you dont feel so bad about riding around here
Day 1 and already got the Authorities hittin' the Lights, taking you into custody, and escorting you out of their jurisdiction .....
The makings of a truly memorable Journey
It sounds like a great trip, and of course it wouldn't be much of a memory if their wasn't a clinker thrown into the works from time to time. Ride safe.
I'm in Casper, WY. mike, about 150 miles from Hill city. (about 100 miles from Newcastle on the western edge of the black hills) Not too far to give you a hand, not to far for a day trip.
The weather every dang afternoon has been a pretty big concern and I'm gettin a might tired of it, watch out ok? Storms in the hills are sudden and can be pretty violent this time of the year.

It sure has been memorable, no way will I ever go I90 through Chicago again. When we go home we will be taking 80.
At least we had a pretty good day today, 470 miles and we're sitting in Sioux Falls.

I've been watching the weather, it looks like we might luck out and get some decent stuff while we are there. I know what you mean about sudden storms, been caught in 2 of them on past trips.
The 1st one we enjoyed a great day and no bad weather in the forecast, come out of the restaurant in Keystone and saw we was going to get wet. It went from wet do marble sized hail on the way back to the hotel. We had no place to go, my friend who was also on the trip with us had bloody welts on his calves by the time we got back to the hotel.
The 2nd time was when my dad and I were on a trip in 2011, we skirted the storm for several hours. When we decided to just go through it a good Samaritan saved our bacon when they stopped and told us not to go that way, the hail was dropping almost baseball sized.

Yeah but when the hills are good, they are very good huh?
I don't know if your into such things but over at Center lake outside Custer is the black hills playhouse and I have never seen a bad play there.
I used to take along some wine and food and have a tailgate picnic at half time intermission.
If a guy is there with his wife it's a great surprise for her and don't hurt you any either.
I lived in the black hills for sixteen years and really enjoyed all of it.

Hey Mike, who's mowin the lawn for ya??
I hope you really enjoy your trip!!
When your dad's Tri got hot, what were the temps on your Goldwing??
Lookin forward to your posts. Later eighty80.
Your right, when the hills are good they are truly good. Plays are not my thing, the wine sounds like a great idea though. Tomorrow will be Rushmore and the Custer wildlife loop, hope to get into some herds of Buffalo again. Had a good Bison burger at Chute Rooster for dinner.

We're paying a neighbor kid to mow both places, normally we let it go until we get back. This time we are going to be getting home Saturday afternoon and leaving again on Monday for Wellsboro. I'll have enough time to change the engine oil and primary on my dads trike, then spend some time with the wife before we're off again on another adventure.
Its going to be kind of nuts the next couple months. We have these trips, then my mom and dad will be leaving on one once we get back from Wellsboro. Then the end of July my dad and I leave for Lake George to visit a friend of mine and ride the Adirondacks for a few days. Then it'll be off to Nashville for the wife and I the 3rd week of August.
When my dad's trike got hot, my Wing was running right at normal temp, it could have sat there for hours and not had a care in the world. The thing that messes with the Wing is slow moving traffic, the radiator fans don't run above 16 mph and anything less than 30 mph doesn't provide enough air flow to cool it. A couple times the traffic was running at 20 mph and I saw my temp go to the 3/4 mark on the temp gauge, nothing dangerous, just warmer than normal.
Right now we're sitting in Hill City, cleaned both trikes and ate dinner. Now its just relax and read some Triketalk.

Late June in the Black Hills!!! I'm so jealous. Do you want to trade. It was only 95 degrees here in San Angelo today.
My wife and I spent a couple summers just down the road from Hill City back in the late 90s then went back in '02. Sure did enjoy riding up there!!!!

Give ya a Fiver if you can get and post a Pic of one of you hugging one of them big ol' Badlands Heifers
OK,,, make it a Ten-Spot
How long are you going to be there mike, I could be in Newcastle (my old hometown and about 30 miles from Custer, S.D.) in about 3 hrs. It's about 170 miles. The old mill in on main St. always served some downhome vittles.
I have a dental appt. tomorrow but could get away on Tues. the 1st, might even talk a friend into a ride.
