Shifting and NOT shifting

I have a 2003 GL1800 with a Champion conversion. It has Kyryaken floor boards and toe and heel shifter. In the last year on two occasions the shifting was limited to 1st and 2nd. With a hard kick on the heel shifter it started working....Is there any one out there who experience this and what must be done. I'm going to put new fluid in the clutch system.. Is there an adjustment on the slave cylinder....or could it be the after market shifter....<br />

Most likely it's the heel/toe shifter. If you are really stomping on the heel, I'm amazed you have not already trashed a shifter fork!
Of course, one would have to inspect it to prove or disprove my statement!

I've heard similar complaints regarding the heel/toe shifters. I had the Kuryakyn one on my trike which was further adjusted by the mechanic at my dealership. Although I never experienced any shifting problems with it, I never liked shifting with my heel. To me it was quite uncomfortable and my hip didn't appreciate it either. I've since removed the heel/toe and with the addition of my Roadsmith 'Comfort Controls' and just using the Wing Boards for my foot rests, the shift lever is in a perfect position and I also have plenty of leg room.

Get a Pingle shifter - you'll never go back.

First of all, listen to Rowdy -- never force a shift lever or you may have a $2,000 repair bill ahead of you. As a matter of fact, I have had the same heal/toe shifter on my 2008 GW which I bought new and triked. Now have over 26,000 miles on it and never had a problem with shifting of any kind.

Once I installed a heel toe shifter on my 1990 GL I did have a few adjustments to work through but haven't had any trouble since. One thing is you have to have a little bit of slack in the linkage, and make sure that it doesn't get sticky, use a dry lube on the swivels. If you use grease it attracts dirt a wears fast and binds up. Good luck, ride safe.

</div>had the same problem... found that the casting of the shifter fork was bad. filed the inside of the fork so it would slide on the plastic knob. works just right now... took longer to get the shifter off and on than to file it.

does not take much.

Just for info purposes and a "personal opinion".....I've never liked Heel-Toe Shifters...I'm a "Toe Shift Only" guy. Always ended up taking Them off every Bike I ever bought used that Someone else had added one to.........and, yes, NEVER force a shift...bye bye synchronizer or worse sometimes.....

I have the heel/toe shifter on my Harley. never use the heel. thinking about removing it fore more foot room. I can see where a little adjustment may help.
