    Default Inner primary bearing problem

    Thought I would pass on some info. After installing my new SE Comp I got a whirring sound and slight knocking within the primary. Turns out the Inner Primary Bearing was failing on me. The tell tale sound is a whirring sound and a slight knock heard from the primary.

    If you do hear this, the first thing you want to do is pull the drain plug to the primary. It will be loaded with metal. After that removing the outer primary cover you can look at the forward radius of the starter ring gear and if you see a witness mark that follows the radius of the ring gear. Well its a bad bearing.     I popped the inner seal off and found metal flakes laying between the snap ring and seal. The bearing is falling apart internally.

    Sometimes it can the clutch hub bearing going bad. That can be check by removing the clutch pack and moving the inner hub for runout side to side or in and out.

    You also want to inspect the IPB race and make sure it hasnt walked inboard. You need a gap of .100 between the transmission seal and the lip of the race.

    The clutch hub bearing needs replacement as well. I sprayed it out with brake clean and spun it by hand. You can hear a rattle as it spins near the beginning of the video. >>

    This is my second go round with this problem. First time I just bought a new Clutch hub assembly. Well They are now well over $450.00 retail. With my labor and scrounging for a good deal I can do this repair for under $175.

    Whats crazy is the clutch hub bearing through HD is $80 retail. I got a new bearing from a supply house online for $34. Unfortunately the Inner primary bearing, bolts and interface gasket between the engine and inner primary housing can only be bought From a HD Dealer.

    My dads is on its 3rd inner primary bearing, rattle and whir sound is what gave it up also.

    Yeah I'm on my 4th IPB and now will be my 3rd clutch hub bearing. Decided to replace the CHB this time to save a few dollars over the cost of of a complete hub assembly for a swap.
