    Default Freewheeler Third Brake Light

    Guys,

As all the Freewheeler owners know, the FLRT Freewheeler has a red frflector just under the trunk hatch latch on the back face of the trike. I was wondering if there is or could be a kit to turn that into a third brake light?

    Any ideas?

Also, does anyone know if the "Air-Wing Light kit" fits the Freewheeler's "Air-Wing Luggage Rack"? My dealer says it does not - but I can't help but wonder?????

I just feel any opportunity to increase the visibility is a good investment.....

Yes, I have the 'Air Wing Light Kit' on my Air Wing Luggage Rack. I'd get a picture of the light installed for you but I just got back from putting it in winter storage.

I also did the LED tail lamps which IMO are much brighter than the stockers. I don't know how large this image will be when I post it, but when I blow it up on my computer you could just see the tiny red LED dots which make up the rack light. (Remember; the back of the bike is in shadows with just the running lights on).

I guess the Air-Wing Luggage Rack light is not all that powerful? That's good to know. Thanks!

No, I'm not saying that. What I am saying is that I don't have a very good picture of them in action. I imagine at night they perform quite well...

Ok, may I ask how you ran the wiring? And, do you think it was an accessory you would generally recommend to other Freewheeler owners?

I had it installed with the rack at the dealership. The wiring runs through the chrome tube down into the trunk and passes through to the side cover with all the other wiring. Very neat installation done by the dealership, wiring is not really exposed nor gets in the way. As far as recommending, well, I have no real life examples of it being the difference between life or death, but overall, I am very happy with it!

The Freewheeler has a new P/N air wing rack. I'm assuming the legs are different lengths to accommodate the difference in tilt of the deck it is mounted on??? Is that the only difference .... or is it something that prevents the wiring of the led lights?

Or is it that your dealer has no real mechanics who know how to do wiring??

FLRT can you check what p/n was installed?

Mine doesn't... a hair dryer and a plastic putty knife and mine is gone. Really like the clean lines without it. Really don't see any need for a 3rd light on the rear. A drunk will see 4 or 5 lights back there, and an idiot on his cell phone won't see you if you had 20.

And then there is the chance you are seen......

While I fear drunks and idiots, just dealing with the general, everyday auto and truck drivers can be just as taxing at times.....

I feel increasing your vehicle's visibility is not a bad investment (IMHO). And, it can keep your trike looking cleaner than just removing the reflector - ultimately (GRIN!)

    Springman

PS - thanks for the tip on removal - may help me out later on if I do install a light.

I started installing the light kit this past weekend on my FLRT. The mounting of the light and running the wires through the rack and into the trunk is just as explained in the light kit's install instructions. But, that is where the instructions usefulness ends. I am sort of on my own as far as hooking the light into the bike's wiring, so I sort of left it for this weekend, when I have a bit more time....

Also, I am thinking if I could figure out a way to leave a spare plug or wires in the trunk, I could have it ready if I want to replace the rear reflector with a third brake light....just trying to think ahead.

And, I have a question for Harley: I note my brother's touring bike came with a courtesy light in the touring-pack top carrier. So, why is there not a trunk light in a FLRT? It's not a big deal, just kind of curious? Actually, I don't even know if the TriGlide has a trunk light?

Tour-pak light is an add-on item. No trunk light standard on a Tr-Glide. Both items must be added by Dealer or yourself. It's possible that some editions may have come with it. I added my Harley Tour-pak 12 volt accessory outlet 69200826 to my 2014 Tri-Glide. 12 volt rechargeable LED flashlight works great. I have a place to charge the cell phones while riding or plug accessories into.

If I was adding a third light circuit I would STRONGLY consider vololights
    http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/v...tion-indicator

I'd modify this to use as just lights on the rear as it will add a much higher level of security as it will warn drivers you are slowing down while you are not on the actual brakes.

We cycles slow down a high percentage of the time with engine braking and vololights is a very cool product in this respect.

Is it the left or right side cover where the connections for the light are made? The connections under the seat are 8 pin and the connection from the light are 6 pin. This thing is driving me nuts! Thanks.

I.m pretty sure it's the left side cover, but again, my bike is in storage already so I can't just walk out to verify.

I recently added the Air-Wing luggage rack light kit to my Freewheeler. But, I was not very happy with it installed; I felt it was a bit dim as a running light and ended up wiring it in brake mode, just as a running light. Its brake mode illumination seemed to be on par with the Freewheeler's stock running lights - IMHO.

So, I was still wanting a third brake light - increased illumination when I am applying the brakes....

Then, a few nights ago, while coming home from Dialysis, I saw a new Camaro that had a very interesting braking effect added to the car. When the driver applied the brakes, the car's underside lit up and glowed..... You most certainly took notice when it happened - that was for sure! So, he somehow was using a under-body light kit that was connected to his braking system.....

I want to do the same thing on my Freewheeler!

    I am researching this now.

Good idea. I'm NOT promoting this web site, or this product but it worked for me. Here's my Lehman Raider (ex) trike -

    http://www.customdynamics.com/step_lights.htm

    * Extreme 5 LED Pod - Mounts on Side Surface - 5 LED Cluster - 22/45 Degree Angle *

I bought the black ones (to blend in with the frame color) cleaned and applied the double-sided tape as per instructions, then used black 6" Ny-ties to double-secure it so it would NOT fall off (nothing says "amateur" like an LED light hanging by a wire under a motorcycle)

Wire it to one of your brake light wires.

Here's a picture of the results ~ a red "pool" of light under my trike:

I bought the black ones (to blend in with the frame color) cleaned and applied the double-sided tape as per instructions, then used black 6" Ny-ties to double-secure it so it would NOT fall off (nothing says "amateur" like an LED light hanging by a wire under a motorcycle)

Wire it to one of your brake light wires.

Here's a picture of the results ~ a red "pool" of light under my trike:

Actually, I did order lights from Custom Dynamics.... I decided to use the Stingers though......

I will be using Red under the Freewheeler (bottom of trunk floor) and in the rear inner fender wells. I will use a different effect to light the forward areas. I am very hopefully that it will make others take notice and be aware of my vehicle. But, I am also going to put a cutoff switch in to kill the effects if need-be as well

I am thinking of having the BCM control module brake light circuit power a relay (coil side) and NOT directly power all the LEDs as I think that may be safer on the BCM - as I can't find any data on its brake signal current and voltage specs/limitations.

The relay (contactor side)would just allow the LEDs to draw power directly from the Battery.
