Hopefully some one can help me out. I have a 1988 1500 with a Lehman trike kit. I took it to the shop last week because of a clunk when i let off the gas.He told me the ring and pinion gears were bad and needed to be replaced that i should take it to a Lehman dealer.I live in north west New Jersey and I need a place to take it to, any suggestions. Thanks

Try the Lehman web site. Check the list of dealers for one close to you. I know of one just outside of Philly that I visited. Tom:)

Try to find which rear end they (Lehman) used, (Some Ford Mustang differentials are used) It's possible you could get the required service at a local auto dealership's service dept.

My wifes first trike was 2000 Valk with Lehman. It had an early Pinto 8 inch in it. I would not think that it would tear out the rear end. I had to replace the frount u joint with the same clunk. It is one piece and can be orderded through Honda. Not a real big job to do yourself.

Thanks for the info. Could you tell me if the drive shaft comes out like a car, just unbolt the rear ujoint and slide it out

have you located the real problem?
i doubt the gears are bad

pretty sure the shaft is bolted same as a car in the back and a slip joint in front... could be wrong

Rich I have a 96 1500 with a 06 lehman kit.
It has a grease sert on the back u. joint.
If yours has that try greaseing it and if that reduces the clunking noise,Iam going with the others who are saying it is a u-joint.
Another way to tell is to jack up the right rear wheel and put the bike in low gear and try rocking the wheel back and forth just be sure to block the front and left rear wheel real good so the bike will not move also to use a jack stand to hold the bike up.

Had the same problem with mine,it was the front u-joint, it disconnects in the rear an slides out, make sure it lines up when re-inserting, took a hour to fix mine, was done at Timms in MN :wtg:

Thanks every one for all the info it was the front u-joint like expected, got it outand just waiting for the new one to get here. Thanks again Rich

And as far as I've seen, Lehman used the Ford 6.75" integral carrier rear in these kits, cut down in length ... no "hogshead" ... and Ford 9" diameter drum brakes. Same rear as used early Pintos, Mustang IIs, even some Bronco IIs and Rangers.
