    Default H-D 'Bobtail' Style Fenders

I think an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Has anyone come up with an answer to the short 'bobtail' rear-end fenders? What have others done to stop water / stones / tar spots / bugs?

What have I done? Enjoyed how they look, just like my old 'Duce', Dyna, and Sportie. I really like the look. Also like the offset licence plate.

+1. I too like the offset plate. The fact that it isn't centered doesn't bother me at all. And I've had the bike pretty dirty already and don't see any excessive dirtiness on the trunk due to the bobtail fenders.

WoW ~ that would clash with my "Superior" blue paint.

Some people like the bobtail look, and it *is* prominent. But that's also the challenge ~ to keep its' uniqueness, while keeping the stones / insects / tar damage to a minimum. I want my Freewheeler to look"young" 10 years down the road.

FLRT ~ you should know how I feel ~ you've got a '76 Honda CB750 that looks like it's just out of a showroom.

I left mine "stock" as is. I don't see the bob tail fenders as much of an issue. There are quite a few out there in the two-wheeled realm . Just think of it like being two of them riding side by side (GRIN!)

I guess I may consider flaps, if there is ever a kit made for the FLRT that appeals to me......

I have toyed with the idea of purchasing the Free Wheeler. If I do I would see if the mount for the plate on the left fender would work on the right fender. If so, I would mount a same size (personalized plate) on the right side to balance the rear out.

Mounting a license plate on the right size is P/N 67900187 (it's the same identical bracket)

Make sure you have Loctite 222 or similar, since you can't torque it too tight ~ the bolts screw up into brass threads on the inside of each fender.

Finally, remember that the right taillight is all-red ~ if you want to highlight your 'personalized plate' at night, you'll need one that has a clear lens at the bottom P/N 68369-03

OK, so I am curious, with all that, what is that personalized plate going to say???

maybe: "Hey! My license plate is on the OTHER side!"

Actually, I am really curious as to what other folks would have over there, if they did it????

Not sure where you live, but here it is illegal to have 2 different license plates on the same vehicle.

As I said before, the asymmetrical design and bobbed fenders appealed to me when I bought the Free. Not a lot of dirt roads out here, and no one has complained about debris getting tossed at them.

Well, where I live (in Ohio), I doubt many would even take notice of the novelty plate - short of being stopped behind at a light maybe.....

And, I don't really see the plate mounting as making the Freewheeler "Asymmetrical" at least to me. You gotta stick a license plate somewhere. So, why not just do it like on other Harley Bobtails..... It just makes practical sense to do it as it was done - at least to me.

.....I think I will just leave mine the way it is.....

You could easily move the license plate to the middle to 'balance' your trike. An Aux license plate light at Pep Boys or Wal Mart cost about 5 bucks. Use a hair dryer to remove the reflector and bracket in the middle of your trunk, drill a couple of holes, and extend the stock license plate light and your trike would be "balanced" If you don't like it, get some outdoor industrial double stick tape and put the reflector back to cover the holes. For a couple of grand you could buy Tri-Glide fenders and modify them to fit your Free, and then the water splashing, rock tossing, and mud slinging would be cured. . . . and you would have a totally unique Tri-Freewheeler

Actually, I am curious as to what a Freewheeler with no fenders my look like? That is what I find inspiring about the Freewheeler; it does not have the extraneous fluff that the TriGlide carries and makes a great base to build, modify, and customize...... Now, if Harley can just resolve itself to sticking with this model; and, Harley and the aftermarket can build up the support for it.... I really do think the Freewheeler can be an endearing trike model give the time and support. Springman

Here's my rear splash guards. It's hard to see in the 2nd photo, but the left one is a mirror image of the right.

I resisted the urge to add 'curb feelers' or chrome mudflap girls
