Trike Trunk Problem

I have a friend with a MotorTrike Goldwing (1800 I believe). The trike trunk will not open. The latch on the left side seems to try to release but will not allow the door to open. Does anyone have any information on how to rectify this? Step by step instructions that I can pass on to her please. She is considering trying to force it open which I'm sure will at best mar the finish and at worst require a new trunk door.

Sounds like something got out of whack.... If one latch releases the other should also. Maybe the cable is just not pulling far enough or the stuck side is binding.

A little more information would be helpful but I'll give you some quick hints.

First have her try pushing in on the lid real hard while trying the release handle. If that does not work then look for the emergency release cable.

That you will have to pull toward the front of the bike to release the trunk lid. Mine is stowed on the left side close to the battery. You'll have to remove the left side cover. Worst case someone left it up under the seat in which case the two passenger handles must be removed then the back of the seat lifts up and back. If the GL1800 has heated seats the connector at the back will have to be released before the seat can be lifted much. I put a pad on my upper cowl (where the gas tank is on most bikes) then rest the front of the seat on it while I wrestle with the heated seat connector.

DON'T try to pry the lid off. That could be a big mistake.

I would try a Motor Trike dealer first. If no luck I would call Motor Trike. No prying don't think that will do anything,but cause more problems. RIDE SAFE

With my Motor Trike.
The middle handle opens the rear hatch or small trunk.
The right side handle opens the main large trunk.
Behind the lower right side chrome cover is a override pull handle to open the main trunk.

They might just have hit the Honda key fob remote which is locking them out of both.
The left handle does nothing on my trike at all.

I have the same problem on my 2010 Razor and would like to know if you found a solution? The clearance between the bottom of the GW trunk and the top of the MT kit is so small I can't get my fingers to grasp the release latch. Even if I do, the MT trunk lid won't pop open without some type of force. I'm thinking that the MT trunk needs some kind of handle on the face so you can pull it open more easily. If anyone knows about a good chrome handle, send the info along.

I have a 2014 Motor Trike Razor and the trunk was very hard to open. My wife and I were out for a ride and she put her helmet and purse in the trunk. When I tried to open it, something inside let loose. Ruined our day a bit. I got home and opened the small trunk and took out the 3 machine screws covering the mechanism. One of the green plastic parts snapped. I was able to pull on the cable with pliers and open the large trunk to get thinks out.

Anyway I was able to fix it and make it very easy to open. There is actually a spare green connector in there and I used that. I sprayed WD40 down the cable and opened the trunk and sprayed it in that cable as well.

I also sprayed it on the hinges inside. Trunk opens so easy now. I did a short Video if you are interested. Really happy the trunk opens so easy now. It was actually Terribly hard before. Hope this helps..

That will help a lot of us that has problems with their main rear trunk.
I did it to my roadsmith and it really helped opening it. Suggestion: WD40 is not a oil and is only a temporary solution. I use 3 in 1 oil in a spray can with a nozzle. Just as easy to use but last a lot longer, it is oil

+1 on what dirtdobber said. WD 40 is not a lube and will dry out.Use any light spray oil, there are motorcyle cable sprays even.Or a light spray gun oil or 3 in 1 LaBells 106 a light oil for model railroad engines that wont attack plastic.

Thanks guys if it gets tight again, I will use something else. Still opening very easy right now. I think I have some silicone chain lube for bicycle chains, wonder it that would be more permanent?

I don't know about the chain lube only because I've never seen it. I am a HUGE fan of general purpose Silicon Lube. Haven't used WD40 as a lubricant for maybe 35 years now. I learned back in my RV days that dust and road dirt sticks to it and that is not good for moving parts. When silicone lube dries there is nothing for things to stick to and it leaves a very slippery surface. If the bicycle chain silicone is thin enough to seep through the control cables I sure would give it a try.
