Building a trike type project at home and need your suggestions for a trike manual transmission. Need left side input (belt or chain) and both sides output (flange or chain). Any help?

What kind of engine and trannie are you going to use for your trike?

The engine is a 1liter diesel. It currently has a CVT style drive on it. I upgraded the turbocharger and intercooled it, but want to convert to a shifted tranny in order to make better usage of the torque of the engine. I saw where OCC used a trike tranny with dual chain drives, and would like to use something similar. I just couldn't find any details on the web for those types of drive systems.

It all depends on how you want to do it. If there's an automotice type transmission that will bolt to your engine, then behind that would be a short drive shaft & automotive differential. Similar to the way the shaft drive trike conversions do it. If there's no automotive type trans that will bolt to your engine, then you might try using a belt or chain drive to a Harley transmission & clutch to drive a differential from one of the conversion companies with a belt or chain. Frankentrike is one of the least expensive kits, but there are others out there that would work just as well. The reason OCC used the chain final drive was because the wheel chair went where the rear axel was supposed to go. Un-needed unless you're building s similar set up for a wheel chair. Just attach the wheels to the axel.

Okay, so I figured I'd better take a picture, so you guys can see what I am working with.



Here is the color code...

Purple - Flywheel, curently holds the drive portion of a CVT.
Green - Drive belt for CVT connecting drive portion to driven portion on existing tranny.
Orange - Drive shafts from tranny to outboard change drive units.
Blue - Chain drive units. These are about 2.5 feet long hollow arms with chains that drive the stub huns and rear wheels.

I want to replace the existing tranny (High/Low/Reverse) and CVT drive system, with a chain or belt driven tranny, that has 4 to 6 forward speeds, as well as reverse, and has the input on the left, and the outputs on both sides.

Do you guys know of any obvious choices for transmissions, having some links would really help!

The CVT is fine for gas engines. The torque curve on the diesel is completely different, and we are hoping that the increased gear selection on a different tranny will allow us to use a better section of that curve.

Currently, the CVT is engaging at about 1200 rpm. That's already deep into the curve for this engine. I will be increasing the weights in the CVT, just to experiment a little, but don't have high hopes for it.

The CVT could be tweaked to better use any portion of the motor's torque you want. You may have to change the springs and cvt weights but it can be done.

OK you revised your post just as I was posting my suggestion to change the CVT weights and springs...let us know if that helps.

That is a nice set up, grinn, have you tried to do a goggle search for CVT, or go to a Snowmobile Racing outlet, surely they will have something to help.

What I am looking for, is not a CVT or variable transmission, but links to manufacturers who build geared transmissions for trikes, with outputs on both sides, and an input on the left side, oh and with 4 to 6 speeds forward, and one reverse. Do you guys know how might build those? Just a good google search of the right manufacturer name, would probably get me started.

how about a front wheel drive trans axle. certainly an adapter could be made to put most any trans on any engine,,, if there is a will there is a way!!!
another option would be put a short shaft on 2 bearing to mount a flywheel and clutch to and drive the shaft with a chain

Can't get them to answer their phone, but the gearbox on their single page website looks promising.
