Question V & H tru duals too loud.

i have Vance & Heins tru duals on my 2014 Triglide. stage one tuner and big air cleaner.
they are a little too loud.
does anyone know what i can do to quite them down a bit, or can i put the original mufflers back on this system. I heard the the two originals had different inserts in them, and that the were rigjt and left side specific. is this true?
or should i just get defferent slip ons?
thanks for any help with this.

On a trike they are not right and left side specific, that's for the two wheel bikes.

You could put your stock mufflers back on and it would be quieter, but you would have a small power reduction. If you want to keep your V&H you could go with something like the Thunder Torque inserts to quieten your bike down some. The Thunder Torques will help to have a quieter and deeper sound. Hope this helps you out

Unless they changed them on the 14 T/G The stock muffles are specific to each side,
Take a stick or a long rod and run it in the muffler you'll see that on the left side the rod will only go in a few inches, The right side will go in almost a foot...So if you put them back on you'll defeat the purpose of true duels..

They must have changed them. I just checked my 2014 TG stock mufflers, the are the same on both sides, both when sticking a rod in and when looking into the end with a flashlight.

However, it is quite possible that the internals (that can't be seen) are different. I know that a lot of slip-on MFG. will put different size baffles in the left than the right for the 2-1-2 headers. They do this because the 2-1-2 headers do not distribute the exhaust equally, so they try and balance that out with different size baffles in the muffs.

I may very well be wrong. Quite possibly there is an internal difference that cannot be seen from the end of the muffler.

There are definitely left and right side mufflers, I checked the part numbers, and they are the same (left & right) on the TG's as you have listed above from 2010 thru 2014. They are also the same #'s that are used on most of the 2 wheel touring models.

I always assumed it was just denoting the difference in the muffler shell. There is an indentation built into the outside body of the muffler. This is to accommodate fitment on the 2 wheeled bikes. Since HD uses the same mufflers on the TG's as the two wheeled bikes, even though those indentations are not needed for clearance/fitment on the TG's, they are there.

I am not planning on cutting any open, but if anyone else has, I would be very interested to know if there is a difference on the inside.

How I found out about the deference was after I went to the true duels [11T/G], I didn't like the sound and the performance with the stock muffles, And as I was standing behind the trike with the engine running I noticed that the left pipe had less flow compared to the right, So i drilled/reamed out the left side... It evened the flow a little but then I got a raspy/tinny sound..
So I 86 them and put slip-ons. on..

Part of your part # difference could be the can has a clearance bend (dent) on the inside of the muff to clear parts on a 2 wheel. Not needed on the trike. But I still mount with the dent to the inside.
My stock muffs are the same measurement for both sides also. Also the advertisement on the outside side of the can might want to go to the outside.

One of the down sides to true duels, I had a set on a bagger once and couldn't take them off fast enough. You could go to a set of Supertrapp megaphone series mufflers http://www.supertrapp.com/product_se...emID=728-78054. Between the disc and the closed end cap they not only allow you to tune the muffler for best performance, they also quiet it down quite a bit. I run one of their Supermeg systems on my 06 Ultra with a 120" engine I built. The megaphone style muffler controls the sound level very well, its quiet enough I can here the radio pretty well.

You could try the stock mufflers, I hesitate to start modifying your present mufflers. Once they are modified you would be hard pressed to sell them to someone else if you choose to.

100 percent on your comment regarding the true duals. I had a sent on my 2008 Ultra with the 120r crate motor and after having the system dynoed, I could not get them off the bike soon enough also. Terrible dip in the torque curve off idle. Eventually (within a few days) install the D&D Borzilla's and the torque curve improved dramatically. I hear fellow riders all the time either bragging the have "true duals" on their rides, or wishing the had true duals.

Given the performance of the true duals, I don't understand why so many riders either still install them or wish the had them.

Take care, and thanks for your continued expert advise/comments/suggestions!!

The V&H Dresser dual are the worse offenders at giving a nasty torque dip, and its right in the area you ride. I think if folks would see some of the dyno sheets showing a true dual system vs a good 2-1-2 system, they would change their minds. The only other system that I like even better is a 2 into 1.
