Default Help with selecting a GPS...

I am trying to find out what all think about the GPS system on your trike. I am considering a GPS instead of a Speedometer. But, I would like to get one that the screen can be programmed to show just digital info, i.e.: Speed, Distance traveled, Distance to go, Direction headed.

Any suggestions or advise if not in agreement with the GPS.

Note: Pls do not recommend the unit built for motorcycles, I feel that $300.00+ is a bit to high when so many other units are being offered at half or more off.

    Thanks in advance...
    Don

    Hey Don

Don't have a suggestion on which one but something I wished I had thought about before pulling out my wallet.

Try to find one that you can see in the sun light. It's tough looking at a blank screen when you get lost.

I know the Zumo 550 will do what you want. Since they've been superceded by the 650, you might find them on line for a price that fits your budget. I got mine last Spring for about $300 under list from amazon.com &amp; am very pleased with it.<br />

I am fooling with my Garmin now . The garmine 205 sells for about $120.00 will show you: overall average speed, moving average, Max speed , direction miles traveled (trip meter) and oh yea almost forgot a digital speedometer . Only real difference is you can't get it WET so make it removable or protect it. Gret unit for the price . and you can use it as a GPS too. and it shows your speed in GPS mode and also the posted speed limit for the road

Our GPS is an older Garmin Streetpilot 2610. I has a screen for speed, direction, elepsed miles, average speed, max speed and a few other things. In GPS mode there is a tab for speed, direction, estimated time of arrival and a bunch of other options you can set up. I really like the unit, but it is old, and the latest map update is the last Garming will issue for it. I got it factory reconditioned off of Amazon, even had the standard 1 year warrantee just like a brand new one.

If all you want is a speedo and compass, an outdated unit can be had for real cheap on Amazom, eBay and such. The GPS function is nice, and a reconditioned current or very recently discontinued GPS can be had for well under the $300 you mentioned, and will give years of service. It would be best to look for one that is waterproof on you ride - I have seen folks with zip-loc bags over thiers, or they just put them away in the wet, but waterproof is the way to go.

I am also partial to Garmin - I have had a Magellen, it did a fair job of routing and Gloria has a TomTom in her car. The TomTom is a nice unit, not waterproof but seems to give wierd directions (as did the Magellen) more often than the Garmin.

I use a Garmin Nuvi 500 which is also waterproof.
It shows your speed digially PLUS the speed limit for
the road your on if it is known. It is ALOT easier to
read than looking down at the normal non-digital speedo.
I use it also in my truck and on my snowmoble !
Yes .. So I can attest that it stands up to waterproof & vibration .

Anyone know if there is a GPS that will remember the route you just rode?

Funny my OLD ( 1992) E-Map did it. It was called a bread crumb trail. Great idea but have not seen it on the new and improved units.

I buy my mounts from GPScity.com because they have a great selection and price.
Here is a mount that all you need is a hole.
RAM Mount Motorcycle Handlebar Clamp RAM-B-367U

The camera I use is a Cannon ELPH S230 (older model).
I plan on getting a Go Pro HD Motorsports model for this years rides.

Here are more pictures of the camera side mount pieces.
I use a dual clamp mount on the camera side to aim it better.

Here is their list on complete mounts instead of one by one.
    MOTORCYCLE GPS (GPSCity.com)

Here is the base mount I use for my GPS side.
RAM Mount Chrome Universal Motorcycle Base with 1in Ball

I even got one of these to mount a camera on my engine guard
or Lynn's rear bumper on her trike to take movies of me following
or on my bag rails or tour pak rack facing either backwards or forwards.

The options are ENDLESS ... LOL ...

My older model Streetpilot 2610 can be set up to remember routes - ones you set up in advance, and it can record routes as you travel. It also remembers top speed, avarage speed, overall average (average speed including moving and stopped time) traveling time, stopped time (if it is left powered up when you stop) total time and multiple mileage logs.
