Default Foot Pegs

My Hannigan trike has load bearing running boards/ground effect boards. For those who have the same, did you remove your factory foot pegs or did you leave them on.

Actually, I removed them just long enough to build new mounts that allow me to flip the foot pegs straight up out of the way. Here is a picture. You will notice I use Kuryakyn ISO Pegs instead of OEM pegs. The second photo is a sided by side comparison of the two different mounts. The little tab you see between the peg mounting points is a bumper to establish level when the peg is in the lowered position. This system has kept me riding. I seriously doubt I could have continued if I had not devised a way to get the pegs out of the way once I was in the saddle.

I did something similar to what Gold Rush did back in 08 on my first Hannigan trike only I used foot boards and the existing peg mounts. I made an adaptor to lower the foot boards until they were about 3/8" above the Hannigan running boards. The foot boards hinge up and out of the way allowing me to rest my feet on the Hannigan running boards for variation on long trips. The foot board allows for a rocker motion when up-shifting and is much easier than trying to up-shift with my foot flat on the Hannigan running board and they are low enough to be comfortable. Also the foot board height is better for braking as well. They work great for me and I love them. You can see them in my sig pic of the 08 on GL1800 Riders Forum or TheGLFORUM in the Trikes Sections. When I got my 2014 Hannigan I made new mount adaptors and kept the foot boards from my 08. Hope this helps. Ride Safe. Doc

P.S. I'll take a close-up pic of the mount on my current trike and post asap.

Yes, removed mine completely. Use passenger foot rest to mount the bike. Put a Kury heel rest on to assist using the foot brake.

1st thing I did when I got my Motor Trike kit was to remove the foot pegs.
I found their position rather uncomfortable. Next to useless.
I tried a set of Kury floor boards for a short time. Same thing.
Now I use the aqua floor boards only.

I agree. OEM peg position does not work for me at all going down the road but I have to have them to get on and off the trike. Vertically challenged and limited joint movement makes it nearly impossible without stepping on the rider foot pegs. Once I'm on they go vertical and the running boards and highway pegs get used.

I like the idea of having foot pegs that can be folded up...I too need them to help with getting on the bike....

My Champion Aqua Shields are not weight bearing. I kept mine on and also added the Kury pegs to the crash bars.

I left them on.....Never had a problem with the foot pegs but sure had an issue with mounting my Kuryakans with the ground effects shaped like they are. Had to buy new brackets.

Mine is a Roadsmith. I took the right one off because I can't reach it anyway. I left the left one on, and use it as a pivot for shifting gears. I also had forward controls installed so I could use the brake pedal.

Took it all off and started over...... Kuryakyn Premium Floor Boards that fold up with their splined adapters for mounting.... and they have 5 mounting locations and fold straight up to use Aqua Shields.... #KY- 4351 Chrome Mini Boards with #KY- 8818 (2 sets) Note: 2 sets are required to get two correctly splined adapters...otherwise one board is flat when down and the other side is angled... not sure why this occurs but it did - Just FYI
On my installation it also required a 5/8" thick spacer be made and beveled 3 degrees front to back that matched the mount pattern to move the heel toe shifter out to clear the Roadsmith body.... aluminum is your friend along with new longer Stainless Steel bolts and Blue Thread Locker.
I have a Road Smith. I purchased the Show Chrome lowering bracket set which puts the OEM pegs right down on the floor of the Wing guards. I think I would be even more comfortable with the pegs removed but I use them to get on the Trike so don't want to put that much weight on the wing guard. This works for me. I do like the idea of being able to swing them up out of the way when riding. That would be the best of both worlds for me. I may try that idea to see if it would be better. JerryD

I have no running boards but I'll chime in, I know imagine that, just some food for thought. In my 50 years riding (counting dirt bike days) I have never found I wanted to remove pegs ... I've always felt more places to move your feet around to is a really good thing. Just my $0.02 worth.

I have the aqua boards on my motortrike and also still have the pegs, I mainly use the pegs for mounting and shifting in traffic but when just riding after about twenty minutes I have to take my feet off the pegs and stretch them out to relieve the ache in my knees caused by the stock riding position of the pegs, it just folds my legs up too much for my battered knees. I added some Kury pegs to the motor guards that allow me to stretch out although the width of straddling the motor can get to my back after a few hours, so luckily by that time it is usually time to stop for gas.
