Default Who doesn't ride these trikes???

I just don't get it. There are a dozen or so trikes for sale here and most of them have logged less than 3,000 miles per year. That's not even 2 decent trips to an out of town rally per year! Not even a 50 mile round trip RTE on a weekend! WTF?

What's wrong with these trikes? Do they have mechanical problems? Are they not comfortable to ride? Are they just show pieces that sit in the garage? Where are the real riders?

I have 2 trikes and put a total 20,000 miles per year on them. The BMW is for sale on this board because I really don't need two bikes in the garage. Truth be told, the BMW is the better touring bike for road trips, but I use the GW for daily commuting because the sound system is better.

Please tell me what's the deal here, or could it be that most posters are just a bunch of wannabe riders???

My friend ... who is also my salesman, told me the average mileage on a Harley trade in (here in town) is 4500 miles and about 4 years old. I bought my 2011 Ultra with 2000 miles on it in 2013, traded it for the 2015 tri Dec 2014 with 12,500 miles on it ... the tri now has 3000 miles on it .. I love to ride,

I see the same thing here. What I'd like to know is where the heck is everyone getting all the money to be trading all the time?

    Some people like me invested their money wisely, And had faith in our country and capitalism and stayed with it for the long run.. Regardless of the naysayers running around saying;

    Default Trike riding

Mine is one of those for Sale. 2005 with 35000 miles, so that seems like it averages 3500 per year, HOWEVER, I bought it in 2011 from a dealer who bought the Goldwing then Triked and sold it. It had 1287 miles when I purchased it. So the first 7 years it averaged 200 miles per year. I averaged 11000 the last 3 years. Why someone would spend that much money on something and never ride it, I don't understand

Guess I can't complain. I put mine in real estate. But I can't trade every few years just to get a new widget that's been added.

    Default Used trike prices

It must be that I live in Minnesota and our riding season can be as short as 5 months with early Fall or late Spring snow storms but, trying to sell a 10 year old trike for closer to $30k than $20k seems to be asking a lot. Figuring in depreciation, a new trike would almost have to be well over $40k. I don't get it. I was looking for a used trike but, even a 15 year old trike still has a asking price of around $20k. Doesn't a trike conversion ever depreciate? The value of the bike plus 8-10k for the now used conversion doesn't seem reasonable to me. But, I also noticed a lot of trikes don't always get sold either the ads just go away or if they do get marked as sold and, I wonder what the trike finally sold for. Was anywhere near the original asking price?

Supply and Demand the foundation of economics. Over the last 5 years trikes have become more popular. As such the supply is some what limited by only HD making a factory trike and all else having to be a conversion. There are deals to be had but you have to look for them and be willing to either have it shipped or go get it.

Now that you are the owner of a Trike, you should be happy that the value is holding.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

You got the want and the ability to get to consider too. Things aren't as easy to come by when you retire and are on a fixed income. Then you got where you are and where a person that might want it lives. How many times do those not match up. And if you are like me, I can never sell anything without taking a beating. Then I try to buy something and those people never come down. Not one penny. I hate the whole sell/purchase game.

How's this for a wannabe rider
I have a 2008 GL1800 level 4 with a MotorTrike irs conversion. I managed to put 320 miles on it last year bringing the total miles on the bike to 3780 miles
A person doesn't have to live on his or her toys - just sayin'

Oh yeah, I have toys like that too. Only use them a few times a year.
Big difference is that I use the trike for daily commuting and shopping.

I do have a car in the driveway. Managed to put about 1200 miles on it last year, about 200 so far this year. Usually drive it a mile or so once a week to charge battery and circulate fluids.

Difference in life style I guess.

I am one of those for sale with low mileage. But don't judge a book by the cover. My previous trike was a 2010 Spyder RT. Got rid of it for a variety of reasons,, including the onset of some health issues,, but I had 20,000 plus miles on it in two years. That included one trip of over 5k. So I wouldn't class that as "posing"...

Late in 2013, I thought I had recovered enough to try again, this time on a Wing. So, I purchased a 2003 with 16k miles and thought I'd ride it for many years since it was a Wing and barely broken in. Low miles from the previous lady owner, who just never became a rider, but preferred being a passenger. So more of a mistake than posing, I guess.

But then shortly after I bought the Wing, along came multiple hip surgeries in 2014, leaving me physically unable to ride without intense pain. So, I am having to give up my trike, a 2003 with only 17k miles. I was only able to log 1,000 miles. Not because I had no desire, not because I was a poser and not because the trike had any issues. It was all health related, and it has been tough adjusting to the "new normal".

So, just like when you see someone trailering to an event,,, there may be more to the story than a problem bike or a poser owner. Sometimes we sell with low miles because that is what the Good Lord laid before us.

    Just sayin....

Wasn't trying to insult anyone. I know there are a lot of reasons (weather, health, job demands, etc.) that bikers can't put a lot of miles on their machines.

My original comment was made because I see so many ads for low mileage trikes and just got to wondering about it.

    Thanks for the feedback.
