Default Transparent Paint Guard Kit for HD

    Hi Fellow Trikers!

In my constant quest to find something to stop the paint from chipping off the fenders of my 09 Triglide I came across the following Harley Product: Transparent Paint Guard Kit HD part number 83989-10. Has anyone out there tried this on their Triglide? If so how did it go?

If that is the 3-M clear plastic that adheres to the fender, I have it on mine although I didn't purchase it from HD. It has been on there since 2006 when I triked the FatBoy, and it has been wonderful! It definitely works to protect the paint from bug and debris chips on the fenders.

The local dealer uses a window tint guy that installs window tinting material on the fenders. Should be cheap enough if it gets damaged. Better than a repaint.

I have the clear plastic from Harley on my trike. I also have used it on my other bikes where a part would come in contact with another part. Example: passengers backrest would rub on the top of tourpac where they made contact & would rub the paint off. I used some there. I would suggest useing it.....

    Guiderider,

3M ScotchGuard Paint Protectant is about the best. Doesn't age or discolor.

They do not sell to the consumer, but you may want to check with these folks. They a recertified 3M installer.

Good choice, but find a professional to install it. It's not as easy as it looks to put on around all the curves.

Thanks everyone! I ordered the HD stuff, so when it comes in I will let you know how it goes on. I also agree window tinting folks would probably do a way better job than I could, so I may go that route. So stay tuned and I will let you know how things shape up! Being new to Triking I am not sure if fender damage is a common issue or not, but I do think that HD, should at least offer to apply the protection as an option at the time of purchase. Like all of you I love the trike and the deep red fenders make it stand out. I know some will say just ride it and don't be so picky, but why ruin a really nice paint job if there is a way to protect it! We shall see.

PS thanks for the NJ tinting address,

The guy who did my paint says there's a spray on product that goes on like paint. We're going to go that way once my paint cures. Hope I don't get too many chips in the next 5 weeks!

Keep us informed on that. I wonder if it is an acrylic urethane clear coat? Dupont has an acrylic called Imron that is not user-friendly to work with.

Clear coat is already on -- that's the final coat of any paint job now days. This is a heavier plactic spray on covering, equivelant to the stick on coverings, but there are no impossible bubbles to get out. Installing the stick on coverings is like putting decals on. I used to work for Pepsi & installing that decal that covered the whole rear of a delivery truck was a REAL pain, so I'm very interested in the spray on stuff. Like I said, I still have 5 weeks to wait before I can get it applied. Once I find out what the product is, & how it's put on, I'll pass it along.

This is what I meant with the clear Imron. It goes on on top of the complete finish. Problem is, it's hard to work with.

It's NOT Imron. Imron is too hard & chips too easily for what we want.

Dean, the guy who did my paint has been trying to find the spray on stuff, but hasn't had any luck. He did find this link for the stick on stuff.

Not for the average person to install. Takes some skill. At least I was not very successful.

Back when I used to paint cars I used to use what they called chip gaurd. It was a spray on product and was tough as nails. The down side was it had a orange peel look even when it went on perfect.

Imron is some pretty tough stuff but will still chip. I sprayed gallons of the stuff when I used to run a body shop, wasn't that bad to work with. I actualy found it pretty easy to spray.

Years ago, I bought a new '91 Ford pick-up. After an accident with a deer, I had the repairs done.. The paint and body man ensured me that he could replace the chip guard stuff that Ford put on in the factory. The consistency of the "orange peel" was so uneven that I had him remove it. This stuff is real but it is also real ugly. I don't think there is a way around it. If you take a look at the CSC website, you will find this page Useful Links and on this page you will find a link called "3M film fender protector installation or repair". This link will show you where you can find the same 3M film that CSC uses and the places that will do the installation. Hope this helps.

I put the HD kit on & was a little intimidated at first. It wanted to wrinkle up around the edges on a curved surface. I kept spraying it & using a squeegie & it smoothed out quite nicely. I'm very happy with the finished look. From a few feet away you won't even notice it.
