Fat Bottom Girl's got an Issue!
So it's gorgeous today, I wash the gal and am waxing it when I realize that the tour pak has a crack in it. It starts just at the forward hole where the forward hinge is bolted and goes at a 45* angle down and forward ... I tried to take a pic, but it's hard to see (see pic). I went to the dealer immediately and they are ordering a complete tour pak ... not sure why but we'll see. All warranty obviously.
Thank your lucky stars if its covered by warranty. I'm on my third tour Pak lids and 2 bottoms. One covered by warranty and the rest by extended warranty.

ya gotts to be careful opening and closing and packing. I've replaced with heavy duty hinges and a lock guide with the heavy retractable cable.

Tour lid cracked on my '09 TG....replaced on my dime. Dealer/Ext Warranty wouldn't cover, even though the retractable tether broke and lid went over farther than expected. EW said I overloaded the luggage rack....BS. Then 3 months later crack in tour box....had local paint shop fiberglas/paint (my dime again). Had the chrome hinges put on before the cracks appeared...don't know if that had anything to do with it, but will not put them on the '13!

Got a call from the dealer ... parts are in .. set up for 4/21 ... first appointment they had ... 9 days for a painted part ... ain't bad ... same model year but still
Went to the dealer yesterday as scheduled and voila ... Fat Bottom Girl no longer has a crack ...
There was a Harley "rep" there and he came out and talked to me (it was a gorgeous day so I was outside reading) ... asked me about my experiences with the service department .. I spoke honestly with him and told him there had been problems in the past but the dealer had separated the chaff from the wheat and now all seems to be good ... I also told him I was shocked that a "painted part" could be ordered and installed that fast ... he told me that their customer survey group had identified "fulfilling painted parts orders" as an issue and Harley was really working on improving that. He also said since mine was a current model year, it was relatively easy to get the part, just yank one off the line and ship it. I told him I was still impressed.
About that time the tech came out and told me all that he had done. He also asked if I had put locktite on the antennas ... I told him yes a drop of the medium on each as per installation instructions I got with the dummy antenna I bought. He told me to not do that cause now to get the antennas off you need a plier and it will mar the rubber at the base ... he also said he left mine attached so he didn't mar them, while he swapped the light out. The whole time the rep is writing something in his folder like crazy. I thanked the tech and he returned to do more jobs.
The rep then looked at me and asked if I always get that kind of report after I get work done. I told him yep ... Tony always comes out and tells me all he did or didn't do. Meanwhile, just inside the door, the service writer is yelling at the wash boy to get the new tour park cleaned up (they wanted to wash the trike, but I was running out of time to get dinner and get to Bible study). The wash boy was arguing that the dealership owner told him to empty the trash. She told him that the customers come first and that the trash could wait. Again the rep was writing like crazy, I turned to him and asked if they knew he was the rep ... he said no ... his first trip to this dealer and he was doing a "secret shopper" type thing. Actually rode in on a bike with an "issue" as if he was on the road. He explained that he caused the "issue" and was "testing" the dealer. I asked him how they where doing and he said, "So far great, they have the issue fixed and are washing my bike." We talked a little more and he told me that customer survey's have led to this program of "secret shopper" visits .... Apparently they have some new "reps" that travel around to dealers they haven't been to, to test them ... was an interesting chat ... and the trike looks like new again. All in all a good day.
Harley has always been fairly good with new bikes. I'd be more impressed if they did there "testing" with a 5 to 10 year old bike. To me that's when you can tell how a dealership excels or not. My 07 has given a dealership something to think about and they came through about as good as I could expect. Bike still under an extended warranty. Just not HD. I doubt seriously if any other brand except maybe BMW keeps dealerships on their toes. I know Honda starts turning customers away if they have an older bike but I think it has to be fairly old. Harley and BMW keep working on the old stuff though. Guess that's why I like those two brands. Completely different machines though.

I can tell you from experience that Charlotte Harley does NOT want to work on anything older than 10 years. You can get the work done but you just about have to threaten to call the MOCO. It's kind of a boutique place anyway. The dealer at Spartanburg SC on the other hand loves old bikes and keeps a ton of Shovel head and other parts and will work on old stuff in a minute.

My dealer really tries to stock a variety, but they are part of the new hd test system ... harley sends them stuff based on sales and other statistics .. good news is ... sometimes they will send stuff that just doesn't sell or they will send too many of them and hd will tell them to clearance it, if it's something you like or can use you can get great deals on it.
The parts manager has mixed emotions about the new trial program ... but I think it's growing pains
I've installed a small screen door chain as a backup for the tour pac tether. I do not trust the tether. Third bike I've done this too.
Glad to hear Bottom Girl is fixed. Also glad to hear about the secret shopper rep checking up on dealers.
