Thread: Took a Test Ride Today

Default Took a Test Ride Today

Sherry and I were at our local dealer today and decided to test drive a Freewheeler. Here are some thoughts about the experience.

My first thought as we were taking off was that 1st gear could stand to be a little shorter as a little extra clutch slippage was required to get moving. Power-wise,I was pleasantly surprised as it felt as strong as our 2011 Street Glide w/103",even though the trike is obviously heavier. Engine performance was definitely a plus. Our demo unit had some Screaming Eagle mufflers installed and it sounded pretty good as we cruised around.

As for ride quality,it was better than we expected although our Boss Hoss w/Arnott air ride kinda spoiled us in that respect. I wasn't able to check the tire and air shock pressures on our test trike so it's possible to see an even better ride quality with a little chassis tuning. One big negative that we will both have to get used to on our own FW is the rear end's side to side rocking. I know it's the nature of the beast with solid axles but the Freewheeler's narrow rear track seems to aggravate this tendency even more.

I was also pleasantly surprised with the ease of steering. It really went where I pointed it and felt very precise. Only downside to the quick steering at slower speeds is some twitchy behavior at higher speeds but it's a good trade-off,at least for me.

I drove on some twisty roads during the test ride and was pleased with its performance. On one particular sweeper w/45mph speed limit,we went sailing around it at about 60 and lo and behold,a local county mounty was parked on the side of the road. Guess he liked the trike too because he just waved at us when we zoomed by him.

In stock form,a Freewheeler is going to need some mods before my wife will give it a passing grade,comfort-wise. Sherry is a veteran rider/passenger but was a little spooked by the trike's spartan passenger accommodations. Our FW had the stock seat w/optional backrest assy. She was not impressed with either and the rear running boards being set in the highest position only made matters worse. To be blunt, lateral support for a passenger really sucks on these trikes,in stock condition. I'm pretty sure it would've been a lot better if we could have lowered her running boards to the lowest setting but the stock seat will have to be modified by Mean City Cycles. That little backrest pad won't work for her, either.

Personally,I found the stock seat fit me pretty well. I'm 5'8",205lbs,and have a 29" inseam. Our test trike had the optional 20" windshield mounted and it worked well except at highway speeds. Driving down the freeway at 70-75mph,I was kinda shocked at how hard the wind was hitting me. When we buy our FW,I'm going to look harder at the Memphis Shade batwing fairing, instead of the H-D CVO 16" smoked windshield that I was originally considering.

I'll add more thoughts as I think of them.

    Default thanks for the observations.

Im eventually going to have to set up the flrt for my sweetheart as well. Thanks for the observations about passenger comfort. I will probably only ride my sweetheart on the back once in awhile unless she just falls in love with it . But she hates traveling in a car so we will see. She loves the travel but hates the vehicle aspect of it. Scares her ... she has anxiety disorder. Still she tries daily so I am proud of her no matter what she does. Thanks also for the input about hwy travel and the windshield. I know its individual for everyone.

I had a stock heritage windshield cut down 3 inches and it was perfect for me. But the flrt is a different bike altogether so might not be the same. Appreciate your post.

Wonder how this Corbin backrest would look on a Freewheeler?

Not sure I would like how it would look on the FW. But for passenger comfort I bet it would be nice.

Thank you! That's the one I was looking for. Having been a former dealer for Corbin,I would prefer not to give them any more of my money if I can help it.
Do you have any photos of the Tourrest on your Freewheeler?

Back rest pad will be a problem for the rear seat rider, so will seat width. A Freewheeler is the Dyna of trikes. It CAN carry a passenger but not comfortably. If you are talking bar hopping or local rides it will be OK, any touring and your lady won't like you very much.

    Good Luck

I think the Freewheeler set up right would do nicely for shorter tours and be more than reasonably comfortable. With that said it's still not an Ultra or Tri Glide.

The Freewheeler on the other hand with the larger backrest pad and the Sundowner two up seat along with the detachable windshield would not be a lot diffrent than a Road King touring model Harley.

The wife has ridden many a mile in comfort on the back of a Road King set up with the Sundowner seat and a nice backrest in comfort.

Again not an Ultra but still pretty comfy over all. Just stating our experience and preference.

I'm going to try to get more info on installing a Tallboy seat, instead of the Sundowner. The former's passenger pillion is 14.5" wide, compared to the latter's 11" width. Might have to modify that Tourrest backrest so it will fit a FW like I want, also. I really think I can set up one of these trikes for longer distances, without ending up with a TriGlide.

Our ZR-1 Corvette has a new owner flying in to pick up the car next week and we'll be ready to buy a FW,anytime after that.

    Just for info,my wife Sherry is 5'5", 130lbs,and has a 31" inseam.

    Red face

I'll try to post pics of my tourrest later. Can't now cause I'm heading out for the day. Not sure if I can post pics here cause I'm tech illiterate! If I can't I'll e mail them. I think it looks great. Wife and Grand daughters love it. Approaching 12,000 miles on my 5 month old FW. I have to disagree with people saying the Freeloader is a bar hopper. I've had 2 TGs. Had them in all 48 lower states.

I ride. My FW is just as comfortable. I set it up with a Sundowner seat, Ws, Kury pass pegs, pass backrest with Tourrest pad, luggage rack, Wards fans, engine guard, Dessert Dawgs soft lowers. Heading out west for 6-7 weeks this summer. Going to travel the perimeter of the US. I know the Free will be just fine. I'm a basic no frills guy. Don't need or want infotainment, Gps etc. FW has reverse and cruise. That's all I need and all I want.

    Just sayin,

Have passenger backrest with large pad, Sundowner seat and 20" windshield. Mustang tells me they will have a seat for the Freewheeler by mid to end of May. I will probably purchase one as I have been very happy with them in the past. Wife says the Freewheeler is comfortable enough for her. Now if it will just quit raining we may get more windshield time!

I think a Mustang seat with driver & passenger backrests might be a good way to go,too.

I hope you guys & gals don't kick us off the site but Sherry and I have decided that a FW is not going to do what we want it to do. As many of you have already said,it's a great trike for solo riders but its long distance capabilities two-up are a little lacking, for us.

Our original plan was to convert our 2011 Street Glide with a Hannigan Transformer kit. We have decided that was a sound plan. Personally,I still love the Freewheeler but just think this is the best way to go.

The 2011 psychedelic purple/black Street Glide was my first choice to trike but they are very hard to come by and I had a limited window of opportunity to get serial number 1 of the Hannigan Bagger/Transformer so I had to go with a bike I already had or miss my slot. Your SG mated with the new Hannigan conversion will be a drop dead gorgeous machine and the IRS will put a big smile on your wife's face.
