NEW THROTTLE AND iDLE CABLES

Well I finally got the short and long throttle cables (obsolete) from V-Twin manufacturing and got the new Idle cable also obsolete (cruise control ready) from Barnett clutch and cable after having to send mine to them to make a new one. It took two weeks for turn around but at least they got it made.

I hate having to change cables, always working with small easy to loose parts from the throttle grip housing and those irritating small brass pieces that fit over the cable ends

I had to remove the gas tank,seat, air cleaner assembly etc. just to get at it.

But the wolf is ready to cut loose!



I always drape a towel over the engine and put a soft tarp under to catch the little parts because its not a question of if I will drop them, only a matter of when and how many times?

I just changed my bars this past weekend and guess what. When I was hooking the idle cable back into the grip, it broke. Snapped right off about 1 foot down in the housing. I also dropped one of the ferrules and it rolled half way across my garage floor. Naturally, I lost sight of it about a half second after it hit the floor and it took a good 10 minutes to find it. I ordered a new set of stainless cables from Barnett and I'll be kicking and screaming this coming weekend just like you are now so I feel your pain.

P.S. I spread a towel under mine to catch dropped parts like that but when I dropped the ferrule, it missed the towel. My cables are stock and I ordered Sunday and the estimated delivery is tomorrow. Not bad service.

That's a great turn around time glad you were able to get them so fast.
I think the thing taking so long for mine was the electronic roll off switch, I gotta give them A+ for creating a perfect new one and I cant really complain the turn around time was mostly mailing.
The original idle cable only lasted 26 yrs. (Cheap Harley crap anyway)

V-twin manufacturing has lots of parts that are obsolete but they didn't have my idle cable.
You have to order through a Harley Dealer to get the parts which seems strange to me, but a source is a source!

Sometimes I consider dropping a little super glue on the Ferrell and cable end but I just never take the time to do it.

My long throttle cable is held in place with a very tiny C shaped clip and I have to hold the cable in the mount, place the c clip and then try to seat into the groove with only two hands and that is an exercise in frustration.

I finally held the clip on the end of an expandable mechanics magnet, twisted fine wire around the cable and sucked it up tight to the mounting hole.

That way I could seat the c-clip with screw driver.

I got a email saying the order was received and I'd get a email when it shipped. Didn't get the shipped email till yesterday, but the delivery date was today. It had tracking and I checked that, and sure enough UPS said it was on time and delivery would be by end of day today. They aren't in my hands yet, but even if the tracking is wrong, I'm still happy if I get them this week. I didn't order directly from Barnett. Got them through D. Kirk.

Good to hear you got things squared away, I know what you mean about small parts. The throttle and idle cable are a PIA to replace.

THAT is a great idea! I can't tell you how many times I've lost a part on the floor, and spent waaaaaay too long tracking it down...

My luck I always drop it down the center of the cylinder head. or some how it misses my soft tarp?

I've done this job before, but I never needed a booster to get it done. Maybe it's become a little more complicated than the last time I had to do it. I better break out the manual and study up on this bike.
