This is an interesting study about internet forums and blogs by Nielsen Research...members & visitors flock here to gather information but most do not post, yet this is the norm. Yeah we knew that but we still wish more would join in...read more here:

I've wondered about that myself ... I've come to the conclusion that there are basically two types of people in the world ... Yakkers like me and listeners ... As my dad said ... Ha got two ears and one mouth ... Use them accordingly ... Just can't seem to get that part right

Ever belong to a volunteer organization like the VFW or Masons? A few do the majority of the work and the rest sit back and watch. So, what else is new?

Interesting article. I've also noticed that on this forum (my favorite). I usually post at least once a day, sometimes more. I've seen, though, that some people only post when there is a topic in a particular sub forum.

On the other hand, if I have some knowledge or interest in a topic, I will respond to a Honda, Harley, Kawasaki, VW or any other trike thread. Same with General, Humor, and others. Once in a while will give feedback to the sponsors, which they appreciate.

Sometimes if there are a lot of responses to a specific topic, I don't post because I have nothing better to add. I'm on other boards that I hardly ever post on because the 1% seem to overwhelm the discussions.

Guess the best we can do is encourage new members to post something, in addition to giving the usual welcome message.

I've been a member of different clubs thru out my life and it's always the same ! But why join anything if your not going to participate even a little ? I seen people join on here and never post not even once ! What"s up with that ! I might not have a lot to say. But I say it anyways

Yeppers, this happens on all forums. Some forums have thousands of members yet only a few hundred will ever post.

Not sure why someone joins as a member of a forum to never post. Maybe he or she thinks they might miss something if he or she doesn't become a member.

Most of the time I'm a member of the 9% group. Unfortunately, it appears that the majority of members here would prefer that I belong to the 90% group. (Just call me the thread killer)

But, as I get closer to retirement, I will be in the 1% group soon enough.

I post, but really not all that much. If I have something to add, I'll post but if my thoughts have already been said by many others, why add my 2 cents? If I have no knowledge I don't post. I think many join to find the answer to their particular question and once they get it, they are done. Maybe they need to start a thread and maybe just looking over other threads gives them their answer and they no longer need to look or even post. I mainly look in the general, Harley, Enabled and Champion sections because that's what I have and know about. The rest I usually don't bother with. I'm no help with a Honda, CSC, or many of the other sections so I don't bother even looking. Maybe I should.

Randy, my thoughts on the article: it's 100% right on. Now the why. Especially this forum consists of baby boomers. Most of us are not tied to social media as the younger generation. Most signed onto find out information not to socialize. Once they are here they are drawn in by the friendly people here. They become comfortable here but that does not mean they are into social media. I believe that understanding and support of that is what makes this a successful forum. Let those who want to be part of a family enjoy, the ones that want to just be on the fringe gathering info great love you being here. Those that want to be disruptive feel free to read but don't be trying to make members uncomfortable. I don't think members should post just to post but should post because they want to contribute to the family in a positive nature.

I totally agree with you Ted, us older guys and gals on average post on social media way less than younger guys and gals do. I know that personally, when I join a forum, and I am a member of many, it's at least initially to gather information, I read a lot and look at pictures and a couple are purely mindless entertainment.

Secondary to that, on a very few sites I do become actively engaged because I like the subject, the people and the general vibe of the community and I have something to contribute. One of my favorites is a fishing forum and though I seldom ever fish anymore, I have been a member there for years and have friends there...love that forum.

I don't really wish for folks to post here just for posting sake either, but yes it would be nice to get to know some of the 12K lurkers out there who I am sure have a lot of interesting things to contribute. I posted this article because I found it enlightening and figured y'all would too.

As a side note, since I approve every member, I have always gotten to see all the registration email addresses and I can tell you, there are some really interesting folks that are members here, from numerous corporate MC folks, bike & hot rod builders, etc. Having some of them engaged could really be educational, but like most I suppose they came to read and gather information not to chit chat.
