    Default AVON TRIKE tire

Ok I have learned you guys give good advice, so I just ordered a AVON TRIKE tire. Should be here by Friday. I hope it's as good as they advertise, but anything has got to be better than the Stock Duncrap tire I now have.

Question for you guys who have one,....Is the side walls so stiff that it makes the front end even stiffer? I hope not!! My front end is very stiff, I feel every small bump. Just had front forks rebuilt about 1K miles ago. I was hoping they would soften up a bit but so far No.

I have played with air pressure but didn't help the harshness. I found for handling 41 PSI was best. Smooth roads no problems, roads with small bumps and grooves will beat me up pretty good through the bars. The Wife doesn't feel it at all and talks about how smooth it rides !!

You might want to consider a super brace, I bit the bullet after 8 years and installed one on my gl1800 motortrike and WOW did it make for better handling.

Got one !!!! And YES it does make a difference in handling, but it does not help the hard hit on the front shocks on small bumps or big bumps. I read on another site that it is better to take the air off the front forks after you install a rake kit???? Have not tried that yet but I will to see if it helps. Kinda got my doughts about how that would help but I'm told it will soften up the suspension a lot. My question is will soft suspension affect the handling?? Seems to me it would.

We are running the Avon front tire, super brace, and eliminated the anti-dive valve on the left fork. That combination makes for a smoother ride than the stock set up.

Doesn't the anti-dive valve only come into play when you lock or hard stop the front brakes?

I believe you'll find that it also limits the travel whenever you roll over any sharp changes in the pavement. You can find several threads on blown left fork seal and they attribute part of the problem as being the ADV. Not much danger of you raising the rear tires during hard braking action after the conversion to a trike.

Go to the Goldwing section and do a search for the ADV Valve, if the link above doesn't work.

Hey thanks for the GOOD info!!!! I found the part on ebay but it is listed for a GL1800, Would this still work for a GL1500 like mine??
I may just do the nickel trike, lots more cost effective, and if it doesn't work I'm just out a nickel!!!

I'm not familiar with the 1500 set up. I do remember reading on another GW forum where someone posted that their 1500 had one on both forks. One was controlled by the foot brake the other by the hand brake. let us know what you find.

Well Crap!!!! I just got an email from American Motorcycle Tire, LLC that they are refunding my money because they don't have the tire!!!!!
AND don't know when they will have it, even though their web site shows them in stock!!! So I will look elsewhere, but I will not pay $184.00 + for one as some dealers are asking, I'm going to try the nickel trike this weekend and see if it helps. But I am going to get this Duncrap tire off as soon as I find a suitable replacement.

OK, Had some time today and back not hurting too bad so I went ahead and did the nickel mod on the ADV. Sorry to report, but I didn't notice any significant difference. I then pulled my fork tube caps and let a puff of air out of each tube. Not sure exactly what my pressure is right now because my gauge won't read that low accurately. I went for a short ride and was pleasantly surprised that this had made a positive difference. Forks and steering do not feel sloppy at all but a Lot of the harshness is gone. I will go for a longer ride tomorrow in the daylight and give a more definitive results after I ride some choice roads that I have in mind.

I know this is a old post but I just wanted to let you know if you go someplace that sells ATV products they will have a tire gauge that measures in single lbs. The reason is most ATV's only run 4 to 6 lbs.in their tires.I have one that I use on my 4wheeler and I also check the air in my forks on my 93 GW.

Well I just took the plunge......bought an Avon Trike front tire and had it mounted yesterday. I will be leaving on Wednesday for a 1500 mile trip and will give it a good break in. Hoping it will do as good as I want it to! I also put some Ride-On in the tire, hopefully that will help with my "cupping" problem I have had with the last 2 front tires (both Bridgestone BattleAx rear tires, reversed for front mounting). We will see what we will see.......

Question, how does this product balance your tire? I know it seals the tire in case of a puncture, but how does it balance?
    Thanks for the info.

It is somewhat viscous, therefore it "moves around" in the tire to seek the correct balance. This is one of the reasons wheel weights are only "perfect" for a short time because as a tire wears, it's balance changes!

Cupping, which is more accurately described as scalloping (see pictures, but we will use the more common term "cupping" here), is a natural wear pattern on motorcycle tires and it will always follow the tread pattern. It is not a sign that you have bad suspension parts. It merely shows that your tire is indeed gripping the road when you make turns (thank you for that Mr. Tire!). http://www.rattlebars.com/tirewear/index.html

    Story:
Had my rear MPA reverse mounted and balanced by ceramic beads. Never had a problem with "cupping", till my front suspension seals developed a leak which I did not catch early. That senerio caused my tire to start cupping. Fixed the problem and my tire looks like it is starting to wear naturally again. I have about 18,000, and it looks like it could run for about another 5,000+ more.
Some people do not like this tire because they say it gives a harsh ride. Well, for the mileage I believe I will get from this tire, I will take a little harsh ride.

As I do, kinda push hard in turns (an understatement), that explanation would make sense to me as my suspension is fine (to my knowledge). No leaks, Progressive springs, fresh fluid and constant air checks. Soooo, I may still be in for "scalloping", damn, I sure wanted more miles out of the front tire........

Are you guys and gals running 40# pressure in the Avon Trike tire? If not, what do you suggest?
